Abstract

Students often experience difficulties in using multiple mathematical representations when solving quadratic function problems, particularly in connecting visual, symbolic, and verbal forms. While previous studies have mainly focused on identifying students’ errors, the strategies underlying these errors remain insufficiently explored. This study aims to identify the students’ strategies when solving mathematical representation problems on quadratic functions material. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, written responses from 127 students at two public high schools in Pekanbaru were analyzed and supported by interviews with six selected students to clarify their reasoning. The findings show that students predominantly relied on procedural strategies, such as point substitution or mechanical formula use, with limited conceptual understanding. Although most students attempted the visual task, many produced inaccurate graphs. The symbolic and verbal indicators showed very high non-response rates, indicating difficulties in translating contextual information into algebraic form and expressing mathematical reasoning. These results highlight the need for instructional approaches that integrate multiple representations and strengthen conceptual connections.

Abstract

The ability to construct mathematical proofs is one of the essential competencies in mathematics learning at the university level. Understanding the process of constructing mathematical proofs cannot be achieved solely through cognitive aspects, but also requires attention to students’ affective aspects. This study aims to examine affective aspects in the form of students’ beliefs and self-confidence in constructing mathematical proofs. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research subjects were 42 second-semester students at a public university in Indonesia who had completed a Number Theory course. Data were collected through a written test consisting of mathematical proof problems and semi-structured interviews. For in-depth analysis, three students were purposively selected to represent variations in the mathematical proof construction process. Data analysis was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method by examining students’ beliefs and self-confidence during the process of constructing mathematical proofs. The results show that students’ beliefs can be classified into three categories based on each proof construction process they performed. In addition, students’ self-confidence is also grouped into three categories, ranging from confidence associated with reaching answers quickly despite being incorrect, to confidence demonstrated through the ability to explain and defend the proof construction process in a coherent and convincing manner. These findings emphasize the important role of affective aspects, in addition to cognitive aspects, in understanding students’ behavior in constructing mathematical proofs.

Abstract

Research in both ICT and RME is expanding at a breakneck pace. The growth of research in engineering can be tracked by one type of analysis known as bibliometric analysis. This analysis can be used to identify the number of scholarly publications on ICT and RME. This study is of a quantitative and descriptive nature. Researchers are interested in examining the development of ICT and RME, as well as the distribution pattern of publications in Scopus, which is based on research affiliations, research themes, and scientific journals. For the goals of data analysis, reduction, visualization, and mapping, respectively, Bibliometrix R-tool and BiblioShiny were utilized throughout the course of this research. Scopus bibliometric study finds that between the years 1999 and 2022, there was a shift in the number of research articles that could be located in the Scopus online database that were associated with ICT and RME. The year 2020 was the year that this publication - Journal on Education and Information Technologies - reached its zenith. In terms of the quantity of documents generated, research in the fields of ICT  is dominated by writers from the Czech Republic and the Netherlands.

Abstract

Abstract

High school students enter adolescence, a period full of challenges, including changes in their physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and behavioral aspects. The inability to adapt to these changes often leads to problems. Therefore, problem-solving skills are necessary. This study explores the relationship between students' emotional stability and their mathematical reasoning abilities. The research aims to understand how variations in emotional stability impact the cognitive process involved in mathematical reasoning. A descriptive qualitative approach was used to examine the mathematical reasoning abilities of twelfth-grade students in Bandung. Participants were selected using purposive sampling based on specific criteria related to their emotional stability and reasoning abilities. The instruments included a mathematical reasoning test and an emotional stability questionnaire measured on a Likert scale. The results indicate that students with high emotional stability demonstrate very good mathematical reasoning abilities, meeting all relevant indicators. In contrast, students with medium emotional stability show good reasoning skills, meeting three to four indicators. Students with low emotional stability, however, fall into the poor category, meeting only one or two indicators. These findings suggest that emotional stability significantly influences students' ability to reason mathematically. The study recommends that educators create engaging and supportive learning environments to enhance students' emotional stability and, consequently, their mathematical reasoning abilities. Training programs for students with low emotional stability are advised to help them focus better and improve their cognitive abilities. Future research should further investigate the interplay between emotional stability and mathematical reasoning across different subjects and educational levels to develop more effective educational strategies.
