Abstract

This study aims to reveal the dynamics of the relationship between Kiai and santri in traditional pesantren. This research deconstructs the relationship between Kiai and Santri in the Indonesian socio-cultural context. Through a critical approach, this study examines the dynamics of power and cultural influences that color the relationship. By analyzing various sources, this study reveals the complexity of the Kiai and Santri relationship that goes beyond the traditional teacher-student relationship. The results show that the relationship between Kiai and santri in traditional pesantren is built on the basis of strong religious and cultural values. Kiai holds a central role as a spiritual leader and teacher, while santri place themselves as obedient and respectful students. This relationship is characterized by a clear hierarchy, where Kiai has great authority and influence over santri. However, the dynamics of this relationship do not always run smoothly. There are potential conflicts that arise due to differences in interpretation of religious values, differences in socio-economic backgrounds, and the influence of changing times. Kiai are required to be able to maintain a balance between maintaining traditional values and adjusting to the demands of the times and their relevance to social and political changes affecting the relationship between Kiai and Santri Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap dinamika hubungan antara Kiai dan santri di pesantren tradisional.

Abstract

The development of the Islamic education curriculum encounters various complex challenges stemming from both internal and external factors. Key challenges include the dynamics of globalization, socio-cultural changes, technological advancements, and the need to balance religious values with 21st-century competencies. This study examines these challenges, focusing on issues such as rapid technological progress, the integration of global and local values, and strategies for developing a curriculum that is relevant, flexible, and aligned with modern educational goals. Employing a qualitative approach, the research utilizes literature reviews and expert interviews to analyze the dynamics of curriculum development in Islamic education. The findings reveal that the challenges faced by Islamic education significantly impact both its internal and external dimensions. Internal challenges include achieving the eight national education standards, addressing the demographic bonus resulting from Indonesia's population growth, and tackling character development issues. To remain competitive in the era of globalization and produce graduates who meet contemporary demands, Islamic education must focus on developing human resources capable of adapting to current and future needs. On the other hand, external challenges are more forward-looking, requiring Islamic education to prepare for future demands related to social issues, advancements in technology and information, the growth of creative and cultural industries, and the internationalization of education, including the pursuit of world-class university standards.

Abstract

Purpose: This study explores how the principles of Ahlussunnah Wal Jamaah (Aswaja) are embedded as core values within the educational framework of Madrasah Ma’arif. Aswaja, representing the mainstream Sunni tradition, serves as a foundational ideology in many traditional Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia. Method: Through a qualitative case study approach using a naturalistic research method, this research investigates the strategies used by educators, the integration of Aswaja values in the curriculum, and the influence of institutional culture in promoting religious moderation, tolerance, and balanced Islamic thought. Data were collected through interviews with teachers in one private madrasah in Malang, classroom observations, and document analysis. Result: The findings reveal that Madrasah Ma’arif instills Aswaja principles not only through formal religious instruction but also via character education, extracurricular activities, and school governance. Conclusion: The study concludes that embedding Aswaja values strengthens students’ religious identity while promoting a peaceful and inclusive interpretation of Islam, aligning with the broader goals of national education and social harmony.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the implementation of the mumarasah al-lughah program in improving the Arabic language skills of students of the Arabic Language Education Study Program (PBA) UIN Imam Bonjol Padang based on the classic management theory POAC (Planning, Organizing, Actuating, Controlling). The research used descriptive qualitative method, with the research subjects being PBA students of UIN Imam Bonjol Padang who participated in the mumarasah al-lughah program, the program committee, and other related parties totaling 30 people. Data collection techniques were conducted through in-depth interviews and official program documentation. Data analysis uses an inductive analysis model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the implementation of the mumarasah al-lughah program has been managed systematically according to the POAC principle (planning, organizing, implementing and supervising): program planning involves identifying student needs and preparing a curriculum based on communicative methods; organizing is done through the formation of an implementation team and division of tasks; program implementation includes routine Arabic language practice and guidance by experts; and supervision is carried out through periodic evaluation and continuous improvement. The implementation of POAC management is proven to contribute significantly in improving students' Arabic language skills, creating a conducive learning environment, and building students' confidence in communicating. The findings provide theoretical and practical contributions to the development of Arabic language learning programs in higher education, especially in the management of a POAC-based program.

Abstract

Abstract

Islamic junior secondary schools (madrasah) in Indonesia face persistent challenges of quality disparity and intensifying institutional competition, demanding effective leadership strategies to sustain organizational performance and public trust. This study aimed to analyze the transformational leadership strategies employed by the principal of MTsN 3 Malang in realizing organizational capacity and competitive advantage. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis involving the principal, vice-principals, teachers, and educational staff as key informants; data validity was ensured through source and method triangulation, followed by condensation, display, and conclusion-drawing as analytical procedures. The findings revealed that transformational leadership was operationalized through three integrated strategies: (1) participatory and data-driven strategic decision-making directed at strengthening flagship programs and educational service quality; (2) mobilization and empowerment of human resources through collaborative culture-building, collective commitment, and professional support for teachers and staff; and (3) institutional change and innovation encompassing excellence program development, student achievement coaching, and cultivation of a competitive academic culture. These three strategies collectively formed a distinctive leadership typology termed Transformational Leadership with Inspirational Motivation (TLIM), which functioned as the strategic driver behind a significant rise in student achievements from 28 to 71 recorded accomplishments between 2023 and 2024 alongside strengthened institutional reputation and sustained community trust. This study contributes a contextualized TLIM model for Islamic educational management, offering empirically grounded implications for madrasah leadership development policy and practice in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

Education currently faces significant challenges, including global competition, rapid digital transformation, increasing demands for quality improvement, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 on quality education. This study aims to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the extent to which influencer leadership affects Islamic performance and dedication, as well as its contribution to the development of ESD-based flagship schools. Additionally, this research explores leadership typologies as an emerging model relevant to 21st-century Islamic educational institutions. This study employed a mixed-method approach using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) across four ESD-based schools in Malang Regency. Data were collected through a survey involving 100 respondents, including school principals, teachers, and educational staff. A pragmatic model with an expansive design was utilized, combining statistical analysis with qualitative exploration through observations, interviews, and document analysis. The findings indicate that influencer leadership has a positive and significant effect on enhancing Islamic dedication and performance, with a p-value of 0.00, and directly contributes to the establishment of superior schools. Islamic dedication plays a crucial role in strengthening institutional quality, while Islamic performance, although not directly significant (p-value 0.136), supports operational success. Furthermore, two leadership typologies were identified: KITA-ESD (Aswaja Transformational Influencer Leadership) and KIVSA (Aswaja Spiritual Visionary Influencer Leadership). These findings highlight that institutional success depends not only on infrastructure but also on leadership strength, Islamic work culture, and collective commitment.
