Abstract

Abstract

Background: Dengue Fever (DF) is a viral infection disease transmitted by Aedes aegypti. It is one of Indonesian endemic diseases that reported to occur throughout the year. To break the transmission chain of DF, the use of larvicides is preferred, especially using natural ingredients, such as bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum). Polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a dispersant may prevent the clumping of material test so that it can be distributed evenly in water which is the medium of growth for larvae. Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of ethanolic extract of bay leaves (EEBL) in addition of PEG diluent on the mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae. Material and Method: Bay leaves as the main material were extracted using 96% of ethanol, and were applied in two variation concentration, 0.75% and 1%, while the diluent added was PEG. The samples used in this study were Aedes aegypti larvae at stages III-IV, with a total of 25 individuals for each treatment group. Evaluation was performed every 6 hours, for 24 hours, then the results were recorded and analyzed using the Kruskall Wallis test and the Mann Whitney test. Result: In both of variation concentration used, at 24 hours of observation it was obtained the mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae was 100%. The p-value obtained for the Kruskall Wallis test was <0.05. From Mann Whitney test, when each of treatment group was compared to the positive control, abate®, the p-value obtained is >0.05, while when they were compared to the negative control, PEG, the p-value obtained is <0.05. Conclusion: 96% ethanolic extract of bay leaves in addition of PEG diluent is effective as Aedes aegypti larvicides. It is also known that EEBL at concentration of 0.75% and 1% in addition of PEG are as effective as abate® as Aedes aegypti larvicides.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Helminthiasis is a parasitic disease caused by worms, with high prevalence in Indonesia ranging from 2.5% to 62%, depending on the region. Soil transmitted helminths are the most common causative of helminthiasis. The Gold Standard diagnose helminthiasis is microscopic examination using eosin. However, Eosin has the disadvantage that the waste from its use is not environmentally friendly and carcinogenic, prompting the search for natural dye alternatives. Purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.), rich in anthocyanins, was selected as a potential substitute because it contains higher anthocyanin levels compared to other plants. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate effectiveness of purple sweet potato pressed water as a substitute for eosin and to assess the differences between pure pressed water and with added citric acid in staining feces confirmed with helminthiasis. Methods: The study utilized a true experimental design with posttest-only control group approach. Purple sweet potato pressed water was tested at varying concentrations 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and as well as at the same concentrations with the addition of citric acid. The population consisted of helminthiasis confirmed stool samples preserved in formalin. Staining effectiveness was assessed using Likert scale, and data were analyzed using Shapiro-Wilk, Levene, and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results: Purple sweet potato pressed water without citric acid demonstrated good staining quality, result of Kruskal-Wallis p-values for coloring effectiveness (p=0.195), visualization of parasite structure (p=0.566), coloring quality (p=0.062). Conclusion: Purple sweet potato pressed water can be used as an alternative dye in helminthiasis examination. The addition of citric acid in the preparation can increase the stability of the formulation.

Abstract

Purpose: The research aim to determine and analyze the correlation between platelet count, platelet distribution width, mean platelet volume and length of stay in children dengue virus patients. Methodology: This research used correlative observational study employed a cross-sectional design and included 48 children patients with dengue virus infection treated at PKU Muhammadiyah Sampangan Hospital, Surakarta. Platelet count, PDW, MPV, and LoS data were obtained from medical records. Statistical analysis to evaluate the correlation between these variables. Results: Results The study found platelet count (r = 0.28, p = 0.849), PDW (r = -0.110, p = 0.456), or MPV (r = 0.105, p = 0.477) no significant correlation with the length of stay. The result suggest that these platelet count, PDW, MPV are not acurate predictors of LoS in children dengue patients. Applications/Originality/Value: The platelet count, PDW, MPV are not reliable predictors the length of stay in children with dengue virus infection. This finding suggests for future studies, emphazie the need for a comprehensive clinical assessment rather than relying solely on platelet parameters when managing children dengue patients to predictors the length of stay in children with dengue virus infection and inform doctors in monitoring the course of dengue infection so that it is expected to reduce the incidence dengue infection in children.

Abstract

Dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) cases are still high in America and Asia region, including Indonesia. Eradication of DHF can be done by larvacide. Temephos 1%, chemical larvacide used in Indonesia for decades, can cause environment degradation and allergic reaction in human. Papaya stem extract as biolarvacide contains saponins, tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, papain and essential oils which have larvicidal activity. It can be applicable in all over the world. This study was conducted to determine the better suspending agent between CMC or PEG of papaya stem extract to kill Aedes aegypti larvae. Objective: To determine the better suspending agent to kill Aedes aegypti larvae. Method: This study was true experimental study in laboratory, used post-test only controlled group design. This study used samples consist of Aedes aegypti instar III-IV larvae. There were seven experimental groups, consist of positive control group, negative control group for CMC, negative control group for PEG, extract concentration of 1.5% with CMC suspending agent, extract concentration of 1.5% with PEG suspending agent, extract concentration of 2% with CMC suspending agent, extract concentration of 2% with PEG suspending agent. Each group was repeated 4 times and counted every 6 hours (6th, 12th, 18th, 24th). Data analysis using the SPSS application ver 23. Probit test used to determine the effectiveness of the larvacide, LC50 and LT50 to determine the concentration and time to kill 50% of Aedes aegypti larvae. It used Kruskal Wallis Test to compare four dependent groups. It used Mann Whitney Test to compare the differences of each group. Result: The study showed that LC50 PEG was 0.033%, LC50 CMC was 0.321%, LT50 (PEG+1.5%) was 20.8 hours, LT50 (PEG+2%) was 30.7 hours, LT50 (CMC+1.5%) was 23.5 hours, LT50 (CMC+2%) was 40.7 hours. Based on the probit test, the LC50 and LT50 results showed that papaya stem methanol extract with PEG suspending agent was more effective than CMC suspending agent, it needed lower concentration and lower time to kill 50% of larvae. Kruskall Wallis Test result p<0.05, so there was significantly difference between groups. Post hoc Mann-Whitney Test result p<0.05 between C(-) PEG group with P1, P2, P3, P4 and between C(-) CMC group with P1, P2, P3, P4, so there was significantly difference between C(-) PEG with each group and C(-) CMC with each group. Conclusion: It can be concluded that papaya stem methanol extract with PEG suspending agent was more effective than CMC suspending agent to kill Aedes aegypti larvae.

Abstract

Controlling Aedes aegypti population in Dengue management programs is often carried out using high doses of synthetic insecticides, such as temephos, that may lead to resistances. An alternative of natural ingredient such as Zodia (Evodia suaveolens S.) leaves, that containing evodiamine and Cananga (Cananga odorata) flower that containing linalool, appears to be a promising larvicide. This study aims to determine the effectivity of ethanol extracts from Zodia leaves and Cananga flowers on the mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae. This experimental study using Aedes aegypti larvae at stage of III-IV. Each ingredient was extracted by the maceration method and then prepared at concentration of 2.5% and 5%. PEG 400 was also added as a diluent. Observations performed every 6 hours, for 24 hours. Data analysis using Kruskal Wallis test and Dunn's test. Within 24 hours, in each of study group, there was 100% larval mortality. The Kruskal Wallis test resulting p-value of <0.05. From Dunn’s test, comparisons between each study group and the negative and positive control groups yielded p-values <0.05 and 1.000, respectively. Thus, it can be said that ethanol extracts from Zodia leaves and Cananga flowers are as effective as temephos as larvicide on Aedes aegypti larvae
