Abstract

Larval control is remain the best method in reducing the high incidence of Dengue Fever, but temephos-resistance has also been reported. Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) leaves are thought to be a promising material to replace temephos. This study aim to identify the larvicidal effect of lime leaves ethanolic extract on Aedes aegypti. Lime leaves were extracted by maceration method and PEG 400 diluent was added as a dispersing agent. Total of 400 Aedes aegypti larvae at stages III-IV were enrolled. At 24 hours of observation, mortality rate of Aedes aegypti larvae in group with extract concentration of 0.3% and 0.4% was 92% and 100%, respectively. From post-hoc Mann Whitney test, p-value of <0.05 was only found when any study group were compared to negative control group. As as conclusion is 96% ethanol extract of lime leaves in addition of PEG 400 diluent has larvicide effect on Aedes aegypti larvae.

Abstract

Purpose: To compare the sensitivity and resistance between ceftriaxone and chloramphenicol in the treatment of Salmonella typhi infection. Methodology: The study used a literature review method and research samples were obtained from search results using e-databases in the form of PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct. Results: From the search results found 1034 articles then the researchers screened according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, obtained 15 articles were received for review. From all studies, it was found that Salmonella typhi was more sensitive to ceftriaxone than chloramphenicol. Applications/Originality/Value: Salmonella typhi is more sensitive to ceftriaxone and more resistant to chloramphenicol.

Abstract

This article discusses the health promotion program among Indonesian migrant workers and their children living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, aiming for a better awareness of their health condition. In particular, this article describes and analyzes the community engagement program in Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur (SIKL) and Muhammadiyah Malaysia (PCIM) to provide health education and screening. Based on the preliminary study, Indonesian migrant workers and their families have limited access to healthcare facilities and programs. The program covers topics such as healthy reproduction and sexual vigilance for the youth, well-being and healthy lifestyles, as well as the importance of basic health screening. The program employs a qualitative study, employing the pre- and post-tests to measure the increase of knowledge before and after the program using descriptive statistics. As a result, an increase in awareness regarding health conditions among the youth can be identified after being exposed to the program. Meanwhile, the health screening program successfully identifies the health profile of migrant workers: a tendency to be overweight and a suffer from degenerative diseases. The screening results made them to be more aware of their health condition. The program was well received, as shown by the number of participants and further requests for a regular health screening. This finding indicates that future studies are required, to identify the daily diet of migrant workers and other health indicators. A similar phenomenon might occur with migrant workers globally, showing the importance of the provision of access and health programs for them.

Abstract

Increasing coastal degradation in Terengganu, Malaysia, due to human activities and climate change, has prompted the need for ecosystem rehabilitation program through mangrove planting activities. This program is designed to restore coastal ecosystems, protect coastlines from erosion, and raise public awareness about the importance of the environment. Mangrove planting also provides economic benefits through ecotourism and sustainable fisheries. The implementation of activities involved students, lecturers, volunteers, and local communities in the MYCORAL 8.0 program, with stages of activities including site preparation, planting technique training, seedling planting, and initial monitoring. The results of the activity show an increase in mangrove coverage in the target area and the growth of active community participation in protecting the coastal environment. In addition to ecological benefits in the form of improved ecosystem quality and increased marine biota habitat, this activity also has a socio-economic impact through community empowerment and the potential for ecotourism development. These findings underscore the importance of integrating ecological, social, and technological aspects in coastal restoration, serving as a collaborative model that can be replicated in other regions. Overall, this program makes a tangible contribution to environmental conservation efforts while strengthening the relationship between academics and communities in addressing the challenges of climate change.

Abstract

Dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) cases are still high in America and Asia region, including Indonesia. Eradication of DHF can be done by larvacide. Temephos 1%, chemical larvacide used in Indonesia for decades, can cause environment degradation and allergic reaction in human. Papaya stem extract as biolarvacide contains saponins, tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, papain and essential oils which have larvicidal activity. It can be applicable in all over the world. This study was conducted to determine the better suspending agent between CMC or PEG of papaya stem extract to kill Aedes aegypti larvae. Objective: To determine the better suspending agent to kill Aedes aegypti larvae. Method: This study was true experimental study in laboratory, used post-test only controlled group design. This study used samples consist of Aedes aegypti instar III-IV larvae. There were seven experimental groups, consist of positive control group, negative control group for CMC, negative control group for PEG, extract concentration of 1.5% with CMC suspending agent, extract concentration of 1.5% with PEG suspending agent, extract concentration of 2% with CMC suspending agent, extract concentration of 2% with PEG suspending agent. Each group was repeated 4 times and counted every 6 hours (6th, 12th, 18th, 24th). Data analysis using the SPSS application ver 23. Probit test used to determine the effectiveness of the larvacide, LC50 and LT50 to determine the concentration and time to kill 50% of Aedes aegypti larvae. It used Kruskal Wallis Test to compare four dependent groups. It used Mann Whitney Test to compare the differences of each group. Result: The study showed that LC50 PEG was 0.033%, LC50 CMC was 0.321%, LT50 (PEG+1.5%) was 20.8 hours, LT50 (PEG+2%) was 30.7 hours, LT50 (CMC+1.5%) was 23.5 hours, LT50 (CMC+2%) was 40.7 hours. Based on the probit test, the LC50 and LT50 results showed that papaya stem methanol extract with PEG suspending agent was more effective than CMC suspending agent, it needed lower concentration and lower time to kill 50% of larvae. Kruskall Wallis Test result p<0.05, so there was significantly difference between groups. Post hoc Mann-Whitney Test result p<0.05 between C(-) PEG group with P1, P2, P3, P4 and between C(-) CMC group with P1, P2, P3, P4, so there was significantly difference between C(-) PEG with each group and C(-) CMC with each group. Conclusion: It can be concluded that papaya stem methanol extract with PEG suspending agent was more effective than CMC suspending agent to kill Aedes aegypti larvae.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a disease caused by the bite of Aedes sp. mosquitoes carrying the dengue virus. One of the current efforts to control DHF is through abatement using temephos. However, long-term use of temephos can lead to the development of insecticide resistance, thereby reducing its effectiveness. As an alternative, efforts are needed to develop larvicides derived from natural plant-based ingredients, such as soursop leaves and garlic bulbs. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of ethanol extracts of soursop leaves and garlic bulbs on the mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae. This study was a true experimental study with a post-test only control group design. The experiment was conducted in three replications using 25 Aedes aegypti instar III–IV larvae in 12 groups, consisting of one positive control group, one negative control group, and five treatment groups for each extract at concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.8%. Based on the Post Hoc Mann-Whitney statistical analysis, each tested extract showed the highest larvicidal effect at a concentration of 0.8%, with comparisons to the positive control showing a p-value > 0.05. The LC50 values of the soursop leaf and garlic bulb extracts were 0.102 and 0.116, respectively. Thus, it can be concluded that ethanol extracts of soursop leaves and garlic bulbs are effective as phytolarvicidal agents against Aedes aegypti larvae; however, the ethanol extract of soursop leaves had a stronger effect than that of garlic bulbs.

Abstract

The ability to form biofilms is one of the characteristics of microbes that has the potential to cause antimicrobial resistance. The oral cavity environment, which is frequently exposed to external environments and has a specific histological structure, can lead to the accumulation of EPS, thereby increasing the risk of biofilm formation. Streptococcus is one of the bacterial groups known to have the ability to produce biofilms. Bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp), a member of the Syzygium genus that has been widely used in treating infectious diseases, both traditionally and medically, due to their eugenol content, are suspected to have antibiofilm activity. This study aimed to prove the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects of ethanol extract of bay leaves against Streptococcus sanguinis and Streptococcus mutans bacteria. This study used a post-test only controlled group design, with a microtiter plate assay technique, and determination of MIC50 and MBIC50 through a probit test. The bacterial test results showed that the MIC50 values for Streptococcus sanguinis and Streptococcus mutans were 37.57% and 9.65%, respectively, while the MBIC50 values were 6.41% and 29.98%, respectively. The coefficient of determination (R2) values for both test bacteria, in both the antibacterial and antibiofilm tests, were close to 1. Thus, it can be concluded that bay leaf extract is effective as an antibacterial and antibiofilm agent against Streptococcus sanguinis and Streptococcus mutans bacteria, with a stronger antibiofilm effect than its antibacterial effect.

Abstract

Penuaan merupakan proses biologis yang berlangsung secara alami, di mana tubuh manusia secara bertahap mengalami perubahan yang bersifat menurun seiring bertambahnya usia, yang umumnya mengarah pada kondisi degeneratif. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini dilaksanakan pada tanggal 24 Maret 2025 di Desa Nogosari, Kecamatan Nogosari, Kabupaten Boyolali, dengan sasaran masyarakat umum berusia ?18 tahun. Kegiatan mencakup registrasi, pemeriksaan kesehatan (tekanan darah, IMT, LILA, GDS, kolesterol, asam urat), konsultasi medis, pemberian obat berdasarkan resep dokter, dan konseling obat oleh mahasiswa farmasi. Alat yang digunakan meliputi tensimeter, timbangan, pengukur tinggi badan dan LILA, dan alat tes darah portabel. Data dikumpulkan melalui formulir medis dan rekam pemeriksaan pasien, lalu dianalisis secara deskriptif menggunakan analisis univariat untuk mengetahui distribusi karakteristik dan hasil pemeriksaan. Hasil menunjukkan tingginya kasus overweight, obesitas, dan kadar asam urat yang tidak normal, sehingga kegiatan ini berhasil meningkatkan deteksi dini penyakit degeneratif, pemahaman kesehatan, dan akses layanan pengobatan dan konseling secara gratis.

Abstract

Cedera benturan permukaan tubuh merupakan salah satu cedera jaringan lunak yang paling sering terjadi dalam aktivitas sehari-hari, terutama pada remaja yang aktif mengikuti kegiatan olahraga maupun ekstrakurikuler. Penanganan awal yang tidak tepat, seperti pemijatan atau penggunaan kompres panas pada fase akut, masih sering dilakukan dan berpotensi memperburuk kondisi cedera. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan siswa dalam melakukan pertolongan pertama pada cedera benturan menggunakan prinsip R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Kegiatan dilaksanakan di SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Surakarta melalui penyuluhan, demonstrasi, dan latihan praktik. Evaluasi dilakukan dengan pre-test dan post-test untuk menilai peningkatan pemahaman peserta. Sebanyak 30 peserta mengikuti kegiatan ini, dengan hasil menunjukkan peningkatan nilai rata-rata dari 66,0 (pre-test) menjadi 90,67 (post-test). Sebanyak 93% peserta mengalami peningkatan pemahaman setelah intervensi. Selain itu, peserta dibekali leaflet panduan sebagai upaya keberlanjutan penerapan prinsip R.I.C.E di lingkungan sekolah. Kegiatan ini terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan literasi kesehatan terkait penanganan cedera benturan dan diharapkan mampu membentuk respon pertolongan pertama yang lebih cepat, tepat, dan aman di masyarakat.

Abstract

Streptococcus mutans merupakan bakteri gram positif pembentuk biofilm resisten yang dapat memicu komplikasi serius seperti endokarditis infektif. Penelitian ini mengevaluasi efektivitas fraksi etil asetat daun cengkih (Syzygium aromaticum) dalam menurunkan massa biofilm S. mutans serta menentukan konsentrasi optimalnya. Fraksi ini dipilih karena sifat semipolarnya efektif menarik senyawa aktif seperti eugenol dan flavonoid. Metode penelitian eksperimental kuasi ini menggunakan desain posttest-only control group dengan pengujian microtiter biofilm assay dan pewarnaan crystal violet. Kelompok perlakuan terdiri dari lima konsentrasi (20%, 10%, 5%, 2,5%, 1,25%), kontrol positif klorheksidin 0,1%, dan kontrol negatif DMSO 1%. Data dianalisis menggunakan uji One-Way ANOVA dan Bonferroni. Hasil menunjukkan seluruh konsentrasi signifikan menurunkan massa biofilm dibandingkan kontrol negatif. Kontrol positif (klorheksidin 0,1%) menunjukkan penurunan massa tertinggi sebesar 90,21% (rata-rata Optical Density (OD) 0,248). Konsentrasi 5% merupakan kadar paling optimal dengan rata-rata OD 0,452 dan penurunan massa mencapai 82,16%. Efektivitas menurun pada konsentrasi 10% akibat titik jenuh dan interferensi teknis. Kesimpulannya, fraksi etil asetat daun cengkih efektif menurunkan massa biofilm S. mutans, dengan konsentrasi 5% sebagai kadar paling optimal.
