Abstract

This research was carried out in March 2021 to analyze the heavy metal content of Pb and Cu in the sediment and flesh of the horn shell (Cerithidea obtusa). Sediment samples and horn shells were taken from the coastal waters of Panipahan, Panipahan Village, and Teluk Pulai Village, Rokan Hilir Regency, Riau Province. The method used in this research is a survey method. Sampling was determined by using purposive sampling at three different stations. The results of this study showed that the metal content of Pb and Cu was highest in sediments around residential areas (44.7150 g/g and 104.4200 g/g), while the horn shell was found in areas far from anthropogenic activities (2.4717 g/g and 8.6617 g/g). Differences in the metal content of Pb and Cu in the sediments were found between stations, while for horn shells there was no difference between stations. The metal content of Pb in the sediment did not show a significant effect (F < 0.05) Pb content in horn shells, as well as Cu. The results of the calculation of the PTWI (Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake) value indicated that the horn shell in the waters is acceptable for consumption.

Abstract

This research was conducted in December 2023 to determine the type and content of microplastics in blood cockles (Anadara granosa) by taking samples from the coastal waters of Tanah Merah Beach, Meranti Islands. The sampling location was based on the purposive sampling method divided into residential areas, fishing ports, and mangrove areas. Blood cockle samples from the three locations were selected for only large sizes (2.5-3.7cm). The water quality parameters at the sampling location were measured for temperature, salinity, and pH, indicating that the coastal waters of Tanah Merah Beach are still natural habitats for blood cockles. Three types of microplastics were found in blood cockles, namely fiber, film, and fragments, with an average abundance of 56.33 particles/ind (p>0.05). Further research is needed regarding size differences and relationships with environmental parameters

Abstract

This research was conducted in February - March 2023 in Poncan Gadang Island, Sibolga City, North Sumatra Province. This study aimed to analyze the density of seagrass at each station in the research location, analyze the differences in biomass and carbon stocks in the above-ground biomass (Agb) and below-ground biomass (Bgb) parts between stations, the relationship between seagrass density and seagrass biomass and carbon stocks, and the carbon storage potential of seagrass in the waters of Poncan Gadang Island, Sibolga City, North Sumatra Province. The method used in this research was a survey method, which involved direct observations and measurements of samples in the field. The samples were then analyzed in the laboratory, and the results were described descriptively. The calculation results of carbon storage using the Loss on Ignition method for E. acoroides in Poncan Gadang Island are as follows: 14,836.07 gC/m2 at station I, 3,975.09 gC/m2 at station II, and 65,073.32 gC/m2 at station III, with a total carbon storage for E. acoroides species of 83,884.48 gC/m2. On the other hand, C. rotundata shows relatively lower results compared to E. acoroides, with 8,353.20 gC/m2 at station I, 12,056.76 gC/m2 at station II, and 7,235.53 gC/m2 at station III, with a total of 27,645.49 gC/m2. It can be concluded that the seagrass species E. acoroides has a larger biomass and carbon content compared to C.rotundata, thus making a significant contribution as a carbon sink in the study area.

Abstract

Various human activities fulfill their welfare by producing food, drinks, and other goods which in turn can generate solid waste and liquid waste. Solid waste often contaminates residential areas, coastal mangroves, and the aquatic environment. In addition, the mangrove coast which is used as a tourist area can also receive solid waste as a result of local activities. This study aims to identify the type and abundance of solid waste in Pangkalan Jambi Village, Bengkalis Regency. This research was conducted in Pangkalan Jambi Village, Bukit Batu District, Bengkalis Regency. The method in this study is a survey method. Sampling technique using the quadrant transects method, each station was drawn as many as 5 transect, and each transect consisted of 5 plots with a quadrant plot size of 5 x 5 m2. The data analyzed included identifying the amount of solid waste, calculating the abundance of solid waste, analyzing the differences in the type and abundance of solid waste between stations, and measuring environmental parameters. The results showed that the highest abundance of solid waste was obtained during the weekend at 3.15 units/m2. The second highest was before the weekend at 2.53 units/m2, and the lowest solid waste was obtained during the weekend at 2.36 units/m2. Meanwhile, the highest weight of solid waste was found in the tourist area of the Mangrove Education Center (MEC), the second highest came from the community settlements of Pangkalan Jambi Village and the lowest was in the Mangrove Area of Pangkalan Jambi Village. The types of solid waste at the research location are plastic, metal, glass, rubber, wood, cloth, and others.

Abstract

Oil spills are a significant concern in the waters surrounding Bintan, Indonesia primarily due to tankers releasing ballast water before anchoring at the nearby port of Singapore, particularly during the north wind season. The region's high cloud cover presents challenges for detection efforts. However, the utilization of Sentinel-1 Satellite imagery offers a promising solution. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of oil spills in North Bintan waters using data collected from the Sentinel-1A satellite between December 2023 and January 2024. The study area includes Semelur Hamlet in Berakit Village, Bintan Regency. The analysis of data consists of oil spill detection and oil content. The results that the wind speed was measured within the range of 2 - 3.8 m/s, while the current speed fell within the range of 0.12 - 0.24 m/s. Additionally, the oil content was found to be less than 1 mg/l. The analysis conducted on the acquisition of December 6 - 24, 2023 revealed the presence of oil spills in four distinct areas. The spill areas were measured to be 1109 m2, 346 m2, 4258 m2, and 1491 m2, respectively. The windrose diagram reveals that the prevailing wind originates from the north northwest, accounting for 16% of the total wind occurrences. The average wind speed within this direction ranges from 3.6 - 5.7 m/s. Notably, the highest wind speed recorded exceeds 11.1 m/s and is observed to come from the north. The relationship between the process of image acquisition and the windrose diagram elucidates the impact of wind on the dynamics of oil spill movement.
