Abstract

Arts and Culture education in schools continues to be dominated by approaches that emphasize modern artistic knowledge and practices, resulting in limited integration of local traditional arts into the learning process. This condition may reduce students’ understanding of their regional cultural heritage and weaken their awareness of local cultural identity. This article aims to describe the development and initial implementation of Minangkabau Randai learning as a strategy for the decolonization of the Arts and Culture curriculum at the senior high school level. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which consists of the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The initial implementation was carried out through the introduction of Randai and basic galombang movement exercises for students. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and literature review and were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach based on the perspectives of critical pedagogy and cultural studies. The findings indicate that Randai has strong potential as a local culture-based learning resource because it integrates elements of theatre, music, dance, oral literature, and Minangkabau cultural values. The initial implementation demonstrated active student engagement in learning and practicing the fundamental elements of Randai. Furthermore, Randai learning provided opportunities for students to understand local culture through direct and contextual learning experiences. Therefore, Randai-based learning can serve as an alternative strategy to support the decolonization of the Arts and Culture curriculum by promoting inclusivity, contextual relevance, and the strengthening of local cultural identity.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the role of traditional dance learning in strengthening students’ cultural identity at MTs Muhammadiyah Sungai Batang. The study was motivated by the increasing influence of globalization and technological development, which have the potential to reduce young people's understanding and appreciation of local culture. In this context, traditional dance learning is considered a cultural education medium capable of instilling cultural values while reinforcing students’ cultural identity. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants consisted of the school principal, arts and culture teachers, students, and cultural figures selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation, technique triangulation, member checking, and prolonged engagement. The findings reveal that traditional dance learning plays a significant role in strengthening students’ cultural identity. It not only develops artistic skills but also serves as a medium for transmitting Minangkabau cultural values. Through the learning process, students gain a deeper understanding of the history, meanings, and cultural values embedded in traditional dances. Furthermore, traditional dance learning fosters pride in local culture, enhances cultural awareness, and strengthens students’ sense of belonging to Minangkabau cultural identity. Dance practices and performances also contribute to character building through the development of discipline, cooperation, responsibility, and respect for local cultural heritage. In conclusion, traditional dance learning at MTs Muhammadiyah Sungai Batang functions as an effective cultural education medium for strengthening students’ cultural identity. Therefore, it should continue to be developed as part of efforts to preserve local culture and build the character of younger generations in the era of globalization.

Abstract

This qualitative case study examines how TikTok was implemented as a learning medium for unisono singing instruction in an Arts and Culture class at a laboratory secondary school affiliated with a state university in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The study explored changes in students’ motivation after the platform was introduced and examined students’ perceptions of this new learning channel. Digital environments increasingly bridge traditional music education practices and the learning preferences of digitally native students, yet detailed accounts of how short-form video applications are integrated with culturally grounded vocal instruction at the secondary level remain scarce, particularly outside Western and higher-education contexts. Data were gathered through classroom observation across four sessions, semi-structured interviews with the teacher and five purposively selected twelfth-grade students, and a portfolio of instructional materials and student videos. Data were analyzed following Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s interactive model of data condensation, display, and conclusion drawing/verification, with credibility strengthened through triangulation across sources and methods. Findings show that TikTok was integrated across three instructional stages planning, execution, and assessment functioning as a reference library, a rehearsal aid, an assignment channel, and a feedback and showcase tool. Students’ engagement increased through self-paced, repeated practice, reflecting constructivist and scaffolded learning principles, and their view of TikTok shifted from entertainment toward a legitimate pedagogical resource, although distraction and camera-related self-consciousness remained challenges requiring active teacher mediation. These findings suggest that a culturally grounded combination of traditional vocal pedagogy and short-video technology offers transferable insights that remain underexplored in secondary arts education.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a Google Sites-based learning media as a platform to enhance students’ digital literacy and artistic appreciation in Cultural Arts learning at SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP. The research was motivated by the limited utilization of digital technology in learning activities, low student engagement in independent learning, and the absence of digital media that facilitates the appreciation of students’ artworks. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the 4D development model, consisting of Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate stages. Research instruments included expert validation sheets, practicality questionnaires for teachers and students, and learning effectiveness tests. The findings revealed that the Google Sites-based learning media achieved a “very valid” category based on evaluations from media experts, material experts, and language experts. The practicality test results showed percentages of 93% from teachers and 89% from students, indicating that the media was “very practical.” The effectiveness test demonstrated that the learning media was sufficiently effective in Cultural Arts learning, with most students achieving learning outcomes in the good and satisfactory categories. In addition to serving as a digital learning platform, Google Sites functioned as a medium for artistic appreciation through a virtual art exhibition feature that encouraged creativity, self-confidence, and active student participation in the learning process. Therefore, the Google Sites-based learning media was found to be valid, practical, and effective in supporting students’ digital literacy and artistic appreciation at SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP.
