Abstract

Light plays an important role in the avian life. The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of monochromatic light on serum estrogen concentrations and profile the oviduct, that were the length and weight of the oviduct in the quail. Two hundred and seventy quails were divided into nine treatments of light, with ten replications and three quails in each replication. The treatments were without light,  controls  with 15 and 25 W, red, green, and blue lights with intensities of  15 and 25 lux. Control  treatment used incandescent bulb.  The red,  green,  and  blue lights  were  provided  by   light emitting   diodes  (LED). All lights   treatment   were   given   for   14 h  daily,   started from 17.00 to 07.00. Parameters   measured  were  serum estrogen  concentrations, and  weights  and  lengths  of   the  oviduct  on  weeks 5,  7,  and  9.  Quails   exposed  to  monochromatic   light had  higher  serum  estrogen  concentrations (P<0,05). Quails  exposed to monochromatic light had  better  weights  and  lenghts of  the  oviduct  development. Blue light could be used to increase serum estrogen concentrations and stimulate shell gland development.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to determine diurnal patterns of testosterone and cortisol metabolites to predict the testis functional status. In this study, fecal testosterone and cortisol were quantified in 77 samples from three male Hylobates moloch during a course of three months period. These data showed that the highest concentration of fecal testosterone occured at 18.00-06.00 (23.61 ng/g dried feces), then declined gradually. The lowest concentration was in the evening (5.54 ng/g dried feces). Our tests showed that there was a decrease in the mean testosterone concentration from 06.00-10.00 to 10.00-14.00 to 14.00-18.00. For cortisol, the highest concentration occured at 06.00-10.00 (597.84 ng/g dried feces), then decline gradually in the evening (225.73 ng/g dried feces). Key words: Hylobates moloch, feces, testosterone, cortisol, diurnal pattern

Abstract

Quality of epididymal and ejaculated sperms of spotted buffalo in three different extenders (i.e. Andromed, Andromed supplemented with 0.2% dextrose, and Andromed supplemented with 0.4% dextrose) was studied.  The results showed that there was no significantly different (P > 0.05) quality of ejaculated and epididymal sperms.  The motility percentage of post thawing epididymal and ejaculated sperms was 41-46% and 41-45%, respectively.  And percentage of cytoplasmic membrane integrity of the post thawing epididymal and ejaculated sperms was 66-67% and 47-54% respectively. There was also no significant different (P > 0.05) in the percentage of cytoplasmic membrane integrity between the extenders of both ejaculated and epididymal sperms. This result suggested that epididymal sperms were reliable for artificial insemination as good as ejaculated sperms.

Abstract

Estrone conjugate (E1C) and pregnanediol glucuronide (PdG) were predominant steroid metabolites of estrogen and progesterone in feces of most primates and could be used to evaluate ovarian function. These metabolites were determined along with records of genital swelling throughout 3-4 months period from three female Javan Gibbons (Hylobates moloch) maintained in pairing-typed cage at Schmutzer Primate Center, Jakarta (Ullah) and at Taman Margasatwa Taman Sari, Bandung (Donna and Citah). Following methanolic extraction of lyophilized fecal powder, samples were analyzed using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for E1C and PdG.  In all of the three females observed, both hormone profiles did not indicate any regular cycle of ovarian function even though genital swellings were sometimes observed. In one female (Donna) the hormone patterns showed clear signs of cycle irregularities with extended luteal phase of 40 days and erratic pattern of follicular phase. Of the other two females, no ovarian cycle was found. The data indicate that the fecal steroids analysis is a practical and valuable diagnostic tool for providing reliable information on ovarian function in Javan Gibbon. Factors affected reproductive hormonal profile should be taken in consideration in trying to achieve success in captive breeding program for this species.

Abstract

The risk assessment of antimicrobial resistance is very important to determine the risk of decreasing antimicrobial efficacy can be used as a basis for policymakers in allowing or prohibiting the use of an antimicrobial. This study aims to assess the risk of using colistin against E. coli resistance in the broiler flock. Risk assessment is carried out qualitatively using primary data, interviews, and secondary data. To obtain primary data various studies were carried out including monitoring the prevalence of colistin-resistant E. coli and mcr-1 also mcr-2 genes in broiler flocks, mcr-1 gene transfer from E. coli to Salmonella Enteritidis, mcr-1 gene sequencing, mutant selection windows of colistin against E. coli, and also multiresistant of E. coli colistin-resistant. Assessment of the risk of E. coli colistin-resistant in the broiler flocks through direct contact with live broiler flock environment with the resulting assessment is a medium risk with low uncertainty. Since colistin sulfate is very critically important for humans, the reduced use of colistin sulfate in animal production is necessary to reduce the risk of resistance. Reducing the use of colistin sulfate requires the collaboration of various sectors such as the government, veterinary drugs industries, farmers, and consumers.

Abstract

Abstract

Bats have the second largest diversity in mammalian classes after rodentia (Nurfitrianto et al., 2013). Bat population reaches approximately 1100 species (Teeling et.al 2005). In Indonesia there are 205 or 21% of known world bat species (Suyanto 2001). Bats are the only flying mammals. The ability bat to fly is supported by the shape of the extremities and also the adaptation of the cardiovascular organs. Based on empirical studies of cardiovascular was known that cardiac muscle mass is a good indicator for the degree of adaptive specialization of prolonged locomotor activity, in both birds and mammals. Data on cardiovascular muscle morphology and muscles that support flying ability will provide an overview of the behavior, ecology and physiology of certain animals (Bishop 1997).Several studies have been conducted to study the cardiovascular system of bats. Research on bat hematology profile has been done (Heard and Whittier 1997, Mclaughlin et.al 2007, Wawrocka and Bartonicka 2014, McMichael et al. 2015, Ratnasooriya 2016, Rashid et al, 2016, Rahma et al., 2018). Joseph (1908) says that every animal has a different size and heart shape to each other. This heart size difference is influenced by the size of the body and the high energy required by the animal (Joseph 1908).Bat's heart rate is known to increase during flight (Thomas and Suthers 1972). This is causes an increase in the rate of metabolism. Writing this paper will discuss about the uniqueness of the bat's heart so that it can support its ability to fly.

Abstract

Tempeh extract is a natural substance that contains phytoestrogens, having similar estrogen activity. This study was designed to determine the potential of tempeh extract in improving the quality bone in premenopausal conditions, and to compare the natural product of tempeh extract with commerciallyavailable hormones (genistein, ethinylestradiol, and somatotropin). Experimental design used was Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisted of 7 experimental groups, each consisted of 3 rats i.e.,1) K= premenopausal rats as a negative control, 2) P = premenopausal rats given distilled water orally as a placebo, 3) TEM = premenopausal rats given tempeh extract 300 mg/day/200g body weight, 4) GEN =premenopausal rats given genistein 0.25 mg/day/kg body weight, 5) EST = premenopausal rats givenethinylestradiol 9x10-3 mg/day/200g body weight, 6) SO = premenopausal rats injected with sesame oil/day/kg body weight, 7) BST = premenopausal rats injected somatotropin 9 mg/day/kg body weight. The parameters observed were the bone and serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations, bone ashconcentrations, bone collagen concentrations, bone water concentrations, bone RNA concentrations, bone length, bone weight, bone density, and bone strength. Supplementations of tempeh extract for two months in premenopausal rats could improve the quality of bone, which was characterized by the increased bone calcium concentrations, ratio of Ca/P on tibia bone, bone ash levels, bone density, and bone strength
