Abstract

This study was motivated by the presence of anxiety or teaching phobia among students in facing microteaching activities, despite having adequate academic understanding. One of the factors assumed to influence this condition is growth mindset, which refers to the belief that abilities can be developed through effort and learning experiences. This study aims to examine the relationship between growth mindset and teaching phobia among students in preparation for microteaching. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The participants consisted of 39 students, and data were collected using questionnaires that had been tested for validity and reliability. The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation with the assistance of SPSS. The results showed a significant relationship between growth mindset and teaching phobia, with a correlation coefficient of 0.515 and a significance value of 0.001. These findings indicate that growth mindset plays a role in shaping students’ emotional responses in teaching activities. Although theoretically expected to have a negative relationship, the results revealed a positive tendency, which can be interpreted as increased reflective awareness among students toward the learning and self-evaluation process, leading to higher sensitivity to mistakes and evaluation in the early stages of microteaching. Therefore, growth mindset has the potential to be developed as an approach to reduce teaching phobia, supported by appropriate learning strategies.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how students use HOTS Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) when learning mathematics using the Independent Curriculum. "Twenty-five students of class XII IPA MA Al Hikmah Bandar Lampung became the subjects of this qualitative descriptive study. In-depth interviews and HOTS-based tests were used to collect data. The Miles HOTS Huberman model was used in the data analysis process, which includes data reduction, data presentation, HOTS conclusion drawing". According to the findings, 24% of students are included in the high group, 48% in the middle category, HOTS 28% in the low category. All indicators of HOTS analysis, assessment, HOTS creation are filled by highly capable students. Students in the middle group, on the other hand, are able to understand the problem but have difficulty in assessing HOTS development solutions. Low-ability students show significant challenges in understanding HOTS problems and choosing the right solution. These results indicate that students' HOTS skills are still below the HOTS standard and require improvement by using appropriate teaching methods.

Abstract

Students' ability to face difficulties in learning mathematics is not only determined by cognitive aspects, but is also influenced by affective dimensions, especially self-compassion which plays a role in managing emotions and adaptive responses to failure. This study aims to analyze the relationship between self-compassion and mathematical resilience in mathematics education students. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design on 40 participants selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a Likert scale questionnaire and analyzed through descriptive statistics and Spearman's correlation test. The results showed that the average self-compassion (M = 58.45; SD = 6.861) and mathematical resilience (M = 57.03; SD = 7.127) were in the moderate category. The correlation test showed a positive, strong, and significant relationship between the two variables (rₛ = 0.728; p = 0.000). These findings indicate that self-compassion plays an important role in strengthening students' mathematical resilience. Therefore, the development of self-compassion needs to be integrated into mathematics learning as a strategy to increase students' resilience in facing learning difficulties.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of the time token learning model on improving students' comprehensive cognitive abilities and problem-solving skills on the topic of circles. This study was motivated by the suboptimal utilization of learning modules, as well as the lack of innovation in mathematics learning models that impact students' low engagement and thinking skills. The research method used was a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest two treatment groups. The sample of the study was 45 eighth grade students. The research instrument was an essay test analyzed using N-Gain to measure improvements in comprehensive cognitive abilities and problem-solving, and MANOVA test to see differences between groups. The results showed that the application of the time token learning model was able to improve students' comprehensive cognitive abilities and problem-solving in the medium category. The N-Gain values in large groups were 0.520 and 0.359, respectively, while in small groups were 0.558 and 0.342. However, the results of the MANOVA test showed that there was no significant effect of group size on both abilities. The main findings of this study indicate that the time token model is effective in improving students' abilities, but differences in group size (small and large) did not have a significant effect. This model also encourages active participation and equitable student involvement in mathematics learning.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between self-efficacy and learning motivation with students’ mathematical connection ability. The background of this research is the low ability of students to connect mathematical concepts, especially in higher education. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design involving 50 sixth-semester students who had taken a Basic Statistics course. Data were collected through self-efficacy and learning motivation questionnaires, as well as a mathematical connection ability test. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, with the Spearman correlation test applied due to non-normal data distribution. The results showed that learning motivation has a significant relationship with mathematical connection ability, while self-efficacy does not show a significant relationship. The contribution of learning motivation to mathematical connection ability is greater compared to self-efficacy. These findings indicate that learning motivation plays a more dominant role in improving students’ ability to connect mathematical concepts. Therefore, efforts to enhance students’ motivation are essential in supporting better mathematical understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate and identify the relationship between students’ self-confidence and their ability to solve mathematical problems. Empirical findings indicate that students still demonstrate relatively low ability in solving mathematical problems. Therefore, the background of this study requires further analysis of the factors that contribute to this issue. To examine how the variables are related, this study employs a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The data collection techniques include questionnaires to measure students’ self-confidence and tests to assess their ability to solve mathematical problems. Data were collected through questionnaires to measure the level of self-confidence and tests based on specific indicators to evaluate problem-solving abilities in mathematics. To test the research hypothesis, the data were analyzed using normality tests and simple linear regression analysis. The findings reveal that self-confidence does not have a significant effect on students’ ability to solve mathematical problems. However, students with higher levels of self-confidence tend to have better conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities. These results indicate that, in addition to self-confidence, there are other factors that also influence mathematical problem-solving ability, and some of these factors may play a more dominant role.
