Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of plyometric training on the speed of sickle kicks of athletes from the Elang Putih Pencak Silat School. The low speed of sickle kicks makes athletes' movements easier to anticipate by opponents during matches. This study used an experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The study population was 40 athletes, while a sample of 20 athletes was determined using a purposive sampling technique. The research instrument was a 10-second sickle kick speed test. The treatment given was plyometric training throughout the study period. Data analysis was carried out using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and a paired sample t-test at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed an increase in sickle kick speed after being given plyometric training. The average pretest result was 19.45, increasing to 30.65 in the posttest. The results of the analysis obtained a calculated t of (25.805) > t table (2.093) at a significance level of 0.005. Thus, it can be concluded that plyometric training has a significant effect on increasing the speed of the sickle kick of athletes at the Elang Putih Pencak Silat School. Keywords: plyometric training, sickle kick speed, sickle kick, pencak silat athletes, pencak silat.

Abstract

This study examined the effect of semi-smash drill training on the semi-smash accuracy of male volleyball athletes at FKAN Kuranji, Padang City. A quantitative pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design was employed. Ten male spikers aged 17-19 years were selected purposively from 55 active club athletes. The program consisted of 18 meetings: one pretest, 16 progressive drill sessions, and one posttest. Semi-smash accuracy was measured using a six-attempt volleyball spike accuracy test. Data were analyzed descriptively, followed by a Shapiro-Wilk test on the difference scores and a paired-samples t-test. The mean score increased from 6.20 (SD = 1.87) to 10.10 (SD = 1.91), representing a mean gain of 3.90 points or 62.90%. The improvement was statistically significant, t(9) = 5.29, p < .001, 95% CI [2.23, 5.57], with a large within-subject effect size (Cohen's dz = 1.67). The findings indicate that systematic repetition, target-oriented practice, and immediate corrective feedback can improve semi-smash accuracy. Nevertheless, the absence of a control group and the small sample require cautious generalization.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the physical condition of students in the Basic Tarung Derajat learning process at the Faculty of Sport Science, Universitas Negeri Padang. This research is a descriptive study with a sample of 30 students determined using the total sampling technique. The research instruments used were the Agility T-Test, Push-Up Test, 30-Meter Sprint, Bleep Test, and Standing Broad Jump. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies and percentages. The results showed that agility fell into the moderate category with a percentage of 33.33%, arm muscle strength fell into the good category with a percentage of 36.67%, speed fell into the moderate category with a percentage of 36.67%, endurance fell into the moderate category with a percentage of 43.33%, and explosive power fell into the moderate category with a percentage of 40.00%. Overall, the physical condition of students in the Basic Tarung Derajat learning process was in the moderate category. Based on these findings, it is recommended that students engage in regular physical conditioning exercises, and that lecturers or coaches design more targeted training programs to improve students' physical abilities. Abstract

The role of parents in the development of young karate athletes' achievements is a crucial aspect of sports development. This study aims to explore the characteristics of parents who support their children's participation in karate, a sport often perceived as high-risk for injury. The study employed a qualitative approach using a grounded theory method. Participants included 30 parents and 20 karate coaches from 30 dojos in West Sumatra, Indonesia, focusing on children aged 7–11 years who actively participated in training and competitions. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis, and were analyzed using data triangulation. The findings identified five major categories influencing children's involvement in karate: parenting strategies, parental motivations, the role of the dojo community and coaches, management of injury-risk perceptions, and social and environmental support. Supportive parenting practices, educational and long-term developmental motivations, and effective communication with coaches were found to strengthen children's participation. In contrast, negative public perceptions of karate as a violent or physically demanding sport may hinder children's involvement. The resulting theoretical model suggests that children's participation in karate is shaped by the dynamic interaction of internal and external factors, with social support and trust in coaches serving as key mechanisms that reinforce parental commitment.
