Abstract

Oil palm is one of Indonesia’s main commodities that play a role in the growth of the national economy. It has a considerable contribution in generating foreign exchange and employment. Development of Indonesia’s CPO processing industry and its derivatives is in line with the growth of plantation area and production of oil palm as a source of raw materials. Until 2011, Indonesia’s oil palm plantation area reached 2,103,175 ha with an FFB production of 36,809,252 tons. Meanwhile, oil palm mill (OPM) processing capacity was 30,019,200 tons only. The analysis showed the regional carrying capacity (RCC) was 1.584. Each FFB should be processed in less than 8 hours or RCC for OPM must be smaller than 1 (RCC, 1). Higher production of oil palm plantations in Riau is the potency to increase the OPM. The results of calculations by land development and farm productivity, Riau region is still lacking of 16 OPM units with a capacity of 60 tons / hour or identical to 21 OPM units at a capacity of 45 tons / hour. The deficiency in OPM impacts the price and income of oil palm farmers in rural areas. High demand for OPM in Riau is a business opportunity for investors to develop an OPM and industry of products derived from oil palm.

Abstract

Palm oil plantation in the Province of Riau has reached the unproductive age and need replanting. Private and government-owned plantation has started the replanting, but plantation community owned. The slow replanting process in smallholders’ palm oil plantation caused by poor knowledge of replanting. This community service objective was to increase the awareness of replanting of palm oil plantation run by smallholders, so it can accelerate the replanting process. We used interactive training method to deliver knowledge related to palm oil plantation replanting. The activity combined indoor and field class to give a better understanding of replanting. The community service activity involved academicians, palm oil practitioners, government institution, and palm oil farmers association. The success of this activity measured by the participant's assessment results through the written test. Abstract

Ecological restoration of peatlands leads to the destruction of peatland ecosystems caused by human activities, whether intentional or not. As a result of the damage caused various kinds of problems such as land fires. Tanjung Leban Village is one of the villages with a fairly high rate of fire, especially in 2012, 2013, and 2015. Many burnt lands are left unused, which in turn becomes a fire-prone area due to the lack of control over the land. In response to this, it is necessary to carry out peatland ecological restoration activities in Tanjung Leban Village through revegetation activities. Implementation of activities with the mentoring method through village facilitators stationed in Tanjung Leban Village. The implementation process begins with socialization, which continues with group formation, procurement of seeds, land clearing, and planting. The implementation of this revegetation focuses on the participation of the community who are members of the Peat Care Community Group (MPG) in Tanjung Leban Village. This activity was carried out in the community area (group members) with an area of 14.7 ha and 14,381 plants. The number of plants is divided into 2 categories, namely natural wood species and fruit plants.

Abstract

Kuantan Singingi Regency is one of the ruminant-producing districts in Riau Province. Koto Simandolak Village, located in Benai District, Kuantan Singingi Regency, the majority of the people work as farmers. Generally, farmers in Koto Simandolak Village cultivate livestock traditionally, namely by releasing them to the wild. This condition causes several problems including livestock manure, pollution of the village environment, and conflicts with residents. This problem can be solved if the farmer wants to keep the cattle. By holding cattle, the manure will be collected directly in the cage. Animal manure can be processed and used in biogas and organic fertilizer. The Research and Community Services Team of Universitas Riau saw the potential for utilizing livestock manure waste in Koto Simandolak Village. The Team conducts training and assistance in the installation of biogas reactors as well as training and mentoring in the biogas production process using livestock manure. Another output of biogas production is organic fertilizer. The ultimate goal of this service activity is to increase the income of the target community, namely through increasing livestock production, biogas production, and organic fertilizer production.

Abstract

Ecological restoration of peatlands is an effort to restore damaged peatland ecosystems caused by human activities, whether intentional or not. Tanjung Leban Village is one of the villages with a large area of degraded peatlands and always experiences peat fires. The ecological restoration of peatlands in Tanjung Leban Village is an activity of the JICA Partnership Program (JPP), a collaboration between JICA, Kyoto University, and Riau University. The method of community empowerment is through village facilitators who are allocated in the village. The series of implementation processes began with socialization which was then continued with the emerging of the groups, seedling, land clearing, and planting. In particular, the implementation of revegetation activities focuses on community participants who are members of the Peat Care Community Group (MPG). This activity is carried out on community land, with an area of 28.4 Ha and 23,450 trees. These trees are divided into 2 categories, namely natural wood and fruit trees. Community empowerment activities change the community’s behaviour of peatland management in term of preventing peatland fires.

Abstract

Ecotourism management of North Mareje Mountain Forest Area (NMMFA) is one of ways to achieved sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Central Lombok District. The lack of ecotourism economics value information causes investment for its development runs relative slowly. This study aims to valuate and evaluate the economics value of ecotourism development in NMMFA. The data used in this study includes number of tourist visits during 2018-2019, tourists visit frequency, travel costs and their socio-economic characteristics. Data was collected by interviewing NMMFA’s managers and tourists using questionnaire. Economic valuation analysis was carried out by using the traveling cost method (TCM). Economic evaluation diagnosed using paired t-test by comparing observed versus potential economic values. The Analysis result shows that the willingness to pay (WTP) of tourists whom visit to NMMFA=IDR. 347.579/visit with  economic value = IDR 3,72 B/year. The economic evaluation results explains that the observed economic value = IDR. 986,78 M/year is smaller than the potential economic value of it carrying capacity ones =IDR 127,05 B/year. To improve economic development, it required a new paradigm of forest management by making current conservation activities become a conservation business and improving sustainable ecotourism management aspects.
