Abstract

Abstract

This study examines how language is used on the TikTok platform as a reflection of the social identities of Generation Z members in Indonesia. The language used by TikTok users is not only a means of communication but also serves as a symbol representing group identity, social values, and the shifting cultural dynamics occurring among the younger generation. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method, employing a documentation and discourse analysis approach to various posts, comments, and captions generated by TikTok users aged 16 to 25. The results reveal three main patterns in language use: first, the alternation or mixing of Indonesian and English as a way to demonstrate a cosmopolitan identity; second, the use of slang terms from the community such as “no cap,” “slay,” and “bestie” as signs of warmth and unity within peer groups; and third, the deliberate use of regional languages as a form of expressing ethnic identity and pride in the local environment. These findings suggest that the language choices made by Generation Z on TikTok are deliberate strategies they employ to construct, display, and manage their social identities within the digital environment.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital media has transformed religious communication, enabling spiritual guidance to be accessed beyond formal educational settings. This study examines online ruqyah as a source of nonformal religious learning and explores its socioeducational implications for participants’ religious literacy. Using a descriptive qualitative approach within an interpretative paradigm, the research analyzes eleven ruqyah sessions conducted by Jam’iyyah Ruqyah Ahlussunah Waljamaah (JRA) on the Ruqyah Aswaja TV YouTube channel. Data were collected through documentation and non-participant observation, followed by verbatim transcription and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that online ruqyah sessions function as multidimensional learning environments where religious knowledge, practices, and values are transmitted through ritual-based interaction mediated by digital technology. Participants develop theological understanding, practical religious skills, emotional engagement, and reflective awareness through guided participation and repeated exposure. The accessibility of YouTube supports voluntary and self-directed learning while fostering virtual religious communities. From a socioeducational perspective, online ruqyah integrates spiritual healing with religious education, demonstrating the potential of digital platforms to enhance religious literacy and spiritual well-being in contemporary Muslim societies.

Abstract

Human trafficking is one of the most severe forms of gender-based violence, exposing women to physical, psychological, sexual, and economic abuse. Literary works often portray these realities while criticizing social injustice against women. This study aims to analyze the forms of violence experienced by the female protagonist, Indayati Sri Utamawati, in Mimi lan Mintuna by Remy Sylado. A qualitative descriptive approach with feminist literary criticism was employed. The primary data source was the novel, while data were collected through close reading, note-taking, and documentation. Data were analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with theoretical triangulation ensuring validity. The findings reveal that Indayati experiences interconnected forms of violence throughout the narrative. Physical violence includes assault and confinement; psychological violence involves intimidation, manipulation, threats, and humiliation; sexual violence includes forced nudity, sexual exploitation, pornography, and prostitution; while economic violence appears through labor exploitation, commodification of the female body, deprivation of economic autonomy, and appropriation of the victim's labor. These findings demonstrate how patriarchal power relations and human trafficking systematically deprive women of dignity, autonomy, and fundamental human rights.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study aims to dissect the sociolinguistic aspects of gender in a drama script set within the early 20th-century Javanese-Chinese community. Through content analysis and critical discourse analysis methods, lingual units comprising the characters' dialogues, dictions, and metaphors are classified objectively to unravel the asymmetric power relations between masculine (report-talk) and feminine (rapport-talk) speech styles. The results show that within a patriarchal social structure, male characters utilize directive language, pejorative vocabulary, and domestication discourse as instruments of dominance to restrict women's mobility and silence their verbal authority. This condition forces women to internalize the hegemony that oppresses them. However, crucial findings prove that female subjects are not always passive. Through the character of Engtay, a dynamic practice of linguistic cross-dressing occurs in the form of identity disguise and the mastery of linguistic capital. Engtay cleverly adopts a formal-authoritative colonial legal register, engages in code-switching, manipulates institutional hygiene discourse through pseudo-theological arguments, and applies an off-record (indirect) communication strategy in the form of riddle codes. The data validity checking technique uses theoretical triangulation of feminist sociolinguistics and gender performativity to ensure the accuracy of the hermeneutic data. In conclusion, linguistic power is not a biological given but a social construction, thereby granting women full sociolinguistic flexibility to perform subversion, deconstruct patriarchal dominance, and negotiate gender equality in the public sphere.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study analyzes in depth the sign system in the short story Sepatu Usang Budi by Dodi Indra through the semiotic study approach of Ferdinand de Saussure, with the main emphasis on the dichotomy of signifiers that are manifested in the physical form of the shoe such as damaged, shiny, or muddy conditions, as well as signifiers (signifiers).) which symbolizes abstract concepts such as existential struggle, social class identity, and a sense of alienation of the character. In addition, the analysis also highlights its arbitrary relationships that are not natural but depend on the conventions of language systems, thus forming differential structural meanings through narrative opposition. The method applied is descriptive qualitative with a focus on synchronic and diachronic text analysis as well as syntagmatic and paradigmatic in which the results of the study reveal that the shoe motif effectively reflects contemporary Indonesian socio-cultural issues such as the process of urbanization, economic inequality, and cultural identity conflict through a narrative opposition pattern (new versus damaged shoes that symbolize success versus failure), thus proving the relevance of Saussure's theory in the context Indonesian literature and makes a significant contribution to the enrichment of structural studies in the modern short story genre. The research data in the form of quotations, sign systems, and dialogues contained in five selected short stories from Dodi Indra were selected through purposive sampling techniques based on relevance to daily life Keywords: semiotics Ferdinand de Saussure, sign system, short story Shoes Obsolete Budi.
