Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major health problem in Indonesia, including in Tembalang Sub-district, Semarang City, which is listed as one of the areas with high cases. Indonesia ranks among the top three countries in the world with the highest number of TB cases exceeding one million cases. This research is an observational analytic study with a case-control study design. The purpose of this study was to assess the risk factors of household physical environment that affect the incidence of Tuberculosis in Tembalang Sub-district. The results showed that most of the houses with tuberculosis patients had unhealthy environmental conditions, such as poor air circulation (37.5%), high occupancy density (35%), improper flooring (57.5%), insufficient ventilation (67.5%), low lighting (85%), and high humidity (87.5%). These factors were found to have a significant association with an increased risk of TB. However, ceiling conditions and room temperature did not show a significant association with increased TB risk. These findings emphasize the importance of improving the living environment through education and community involvement in improving housing quality as a preventive measure to reduce TB transmission.

Abstract

Pneumonia is still the biggest cause of childhood mortality and also the cause of death in many elderly people in the world. The incidence of Pneumonia in 2015 in Semarang City was found as many as 7,759 cases, an increase compared to the previous year which reached 4,295 cases. The problem of Penumonia disease is most prevalent in the Working Area of Mijen Community Health Center, which is found 337 cases. This was a case-control study using the retrospective study method. Case group were 35 respondents and control group 35 respondents. The data analysis used univariate and bivariate analysis with Chi Square and the magnitude of risk with Odd Ratio and multivariate analysis to know the correlation (p) of independent variables together with dependent variable with logistic regression. The results of the research: 1) there is a relationship between the habit of opening the window of the house with the incidence of pneumonia (p = 0,031, OR = 3,273; 95% CI), 2) Cigarette Smoke Exposure (p = 0,002; OR = 5,537; 95% CI); 3) Healthy house (p = 0,010; OR = 6,303; 95% CI). Multivariate analysis results: 1). there is a relationship between the habit of opening the window of the house with the incidence of pneumonia OR = 3,596, 2). Cigarette Smoke Exposure OR = 8,426,3). House Condition OR = 9,240. The habit of opening the window of the house, exposure to cigarette smoke, and healthy homes have a relationship with the incidence of pneumonia

Abstract

The Troso weaving industry in Jepara, Indonesia, is a traditional craft sector that relies on synthetic dyes and manual production, thereby exposing workers to chromium (Cr) and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) with potential respiratory and neurological risks. This study aimed to analyze their association with respiratory and neurological disorders among workers. A cross-sectional design was applied involving 101 weaving workers from four production sites. Environmental sampling measured Cr concentrations in wastewater and PM2.5/PM10 in the ambient air, while worker characteristics and health complaints were assessed using the ECSC-87 and Q18 questionnaire. Data were analyzed using chi-square tests and odds ratios. Cr concentrations in wastewater ranged from <0.010 to 0.104 mg/L, remaining below the effluent quality standard of 1.0 mg/L but confirming the continuous use of chromium-based dyes discharged without treatment. Average PM2.5 and PM10 levels were 108.75 µg/m³ and 117.75 µg/m³, both exceeding national air quality standards (55 and 75 µg/m³). Bivariate analysis showed that respiratory disorders were significantly associated with exposure duration ≥40 hours/week (OR=7.333; p=0.0001) and working period >5 years (OR=20.935; p=0.0001), whereas dye type, dyeing frequency, and PPE use were not significant. Neurological disorders were significantly associated with exposure duration (p=0.001), working period (p=0.001), type of dye (p=0.0001), frequency of dyeing (p=0.018), and PPE use (p=0.0001). Environmental monitoring confirmed elevated PM levels and chromium-based dye use, while statistical analysis showed that prolonged exposure and long working periods associated with respiratory disorders, and neurological disorders were linked to multiple occupational factors.

Abstract

Malaria remains one of the public health issues in Indonesia, caused by the mosquito vector Anopheles spp., with a fairly high morbidity and mortality rate and a strong potential to trigger extraordinary events (outbreaks) in Indonesia. One of the ways to control malaria is by controlling the risk factors. The control of risk factors will be successful if its implementation is based on accurate data and information about the vector, the environment, its breeding, as well as the behaviour of the local community. The aim of this study is to analyse the risk factors for malaria incidence in Indonesia. Method: This study used a systematic review of five journal articles on malaria incidence in Indonesia, each using a case-control research method. Results: Based on the similarity of variables between researchers, there are several statistically significant risk factors, namely the use of wire mesh on ventilation, using mosquito nets, tight wall conditions, the presence of breeding places, the presence of resting places and being outside the house at night. Meanwhile, the protective factor for malaria incidence in Indonesia based on the average Odds Ratio (OR) above was the presence of breeding sites (properly managed). Conclusion: There are thirteen variables that become risk factors and one protective factor of malaria, namely the presence of breeding sites

Abstract

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding is essential for infant growth and maternal health. However, factors such as low milk production often hinder breastfeeding success. Herbal medicine is commonly used to stimulate milk production, yet awareness of its proper use among breastfeeding mothers remains inconsistent. Limited evidence exists on the factors influencing this awareness, particularly in primary health care settings.Method: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in March–April 2025 at the Primary Health Care Centers in Tegal Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. A total of 116 breastfeeding mothers were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires covering maternal, child, and family characteristics as well as awareness of herbal medicine use. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods.Result: Most breastfeeding mothers reported awareness and use of herbal medicine to support milk production. Factors associated with higher awareness included maternal age, employment status, and parental support. Many mothers, however, did not inform health workers about their herbal use. The conclusion is Awareness of herbal medicine use among breastfeeding mothers is influenced by maternal and family factors. Primary health care providers should play a stronger role in improving mothers’ understanding of breastfeeding challenges, appropriate herbal use, and the safety of herbal preparations.
