Abstract

This study aims to determine and analyse the effect of numeracy skills in solving mathematical problems on the learning achievement of students in the Mathematics Education Study Programme, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Makassar State University. Numeracy skills are essential competencies for prospective mathematics teachers to be able to apply mathematical concepts in various contexts. This study employs a quantitative approach using the ex post facto method. The research population consists of all active students from the 2021 and 2022 cohorts of the Mathematics Education Program at UNM, with a sample of 85 students selected using proportional random sampling. Numeracy ability data were collected through a validated structured essay test, while academic achievement data were obtained from students' Cumulative Grade Point Average (IPK) documentation. The data analysis technique used was simple linear regression analysis after undergoing normality and linearity tests. The results of the study indicate that: (1) The average numeracy ability of students was in the adequate category; (2) The average academic achievement (IPK) of students was in the very satisfactory category; (3) There was a positive and significant influence of numeracy ability on students' academic achievement with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.458. This indicates that 45.8% of the variation in students' academic achievement can be explained by their numeracy skills. The remainder is influenced by other factors. The implications of this study are the importance of strengthening numeracy skills in the curriculum to improve academic achievement and graduate competencies.

Abstract

This study evaluated two English coursebooks used in Indonesian junior high schools: English for Nusantara, used at SMPN 4 Cikupa Tangerang, and New Frontiers 1, an international coursebook adopted by SMP IT Laa Tahzan Citra Tangerang. The evaluation focused on the quality of the coursebooks in supporting language learning and teaching, and the integration of critical thinking skills. Using a qualitative descriptive research design with a content analysis, data were drawn from Units 1–3, totaling 54 tasks in English for Nusantara and 94 tasks in New Frontiers 1. Findings show that English for Nusantara aligns well with national curriculum goals and provides localized, culturally relevant content. However, it offers limited teacher support resources, minimal pronunciation coverage, and focuses heavily on lower-order skills, with interpretation and explanation making up 56% of tasks. In contrast, New Frontiers 1 demonstrates stronger communicative and task-based features, comprehensive support materials, and greater integration of critical thinking skills, including evaluation (11%) and combined skills (7%). These results highlight the need for future coursebook development in Indonesia to balance local cultural relevance with critical thinking and 21st century competencies, preparing learners for both national and global communication demands.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types of signs in political cartoons based on Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory, specifically icons, indices, and symbols. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, analyzing 12 political cartoons retrieved from the Instagram account @political_cartoon_gallery in June 2025. The results of the research indicate that political cartoons convey social and political criticism through visual signs with deep meanings, such as visual resemblance (icons), cause-and-effect relationships (index), and meanings based on social conventions (symbols). These findings suggest that political cartoons serve as an effective medium for conveying ideological messages and criticism of global issues. This research is expected to contribute to the development of visual semiotics research and enhance public understanding of the hidden meanings in visual media.
