Abstract

Unwanted Pregnancy (UP) is a condition in which a partner or the opposite sex does not want a pregnancy or birth between partners. The incidence of Unwanted Pregnancy in Indonesia is still high (17.5%). Unwanted Pregnancy has an impact on the health of the mother, infant, and family problems. The study aimed to determine the relationship between access to information about family planning and Unwanted Pregnancy in Indonesia. This type of research is quantitative with a cross-sectional design using Program Performance and Accountability Survey 2019 secondary data. The independent variable is access to information about family planning with the dependent variable being Unwanted Pregnancy. Confounding variables are predisposing factors (age, education, occupation, parity, and marital status), enabling factors (area of residence, socioeconomic status, family planning needs), and reinforcing factors (support from health workers). The sample of this study were women of childbearing age 15-49 years who were recorded as pregnant. Multivariate analysis using multivariate logistic regression. Results of this study show that there is a significant relationship between access to family planning information and UP in Indonesia, after controlling for confounding variables (p-value 0.001) (OR=1.964;95%CI:1.334-2.893). Health promotion efforts are needed through communication, information, and health education regarding the importance of access to information about family planning and UP so that it can influence the behavior of women of childbearing age in Indonesia.

Abstract

Child stunting is a global problem, including in Indonesia. The variation of stunting prevalence in Indonesia is very wide between provinces, but the interventions carried out tend to be the same. Variations in stunting prevalence at the stunting locus according to family, mother and child characteristics need to be known as an evidence based in planning appropriate intervention efforts. The study used a cross sectional design which aims to determine the variation in the proportion of stunting according to the characteristics of parents, families and children aged 6 – 24 months in South Central Timor District (TTS) and North Bengkulu District (BU). The research was conducted in June-November 2019. The population is all stunting children aged 6 – 24 months. The sample was selected by purposive sampling with inclusion criteria, namely stunting children, children aged 6 – 24 months, biological children, single births, no defects, and no comorbidities. The total sample was 120 stunting children aged 6 – 24 months, consisting of 60 stunting children in BU District and 60 stunting children in TTS District. The research instrument used a structured questionnaire. Data analysis used homogeneity test with chi square test. The results showed a high proportion of stunting in small families, while based on socio-economic heterogeneous families in both districts. In BU District, 30% of stunting children came from pre-prosperous families and 56.7% occurred in small families, while in TTS District all (100%) stunting children came from poor families and 65% from small families. The proportion of stunting was higher in mothers with normal height, age at the time of marriage 20 – 35 years, education of fathers and mothers were middle to high, mothers did not work, and fathers worked, children were born with normal weight, normal birth length, received breastmilk initiation, and exclusively breastfed. Stunting can occur in all families, so efforts are needed to improve family characteristics, parents and birth history to prevent stunting in Indonesia.

Abstract

An athlete needs to pay attention to the amounts of nutrients that give the body energy. If an athlete doesn't know much about proper nutrition, it can make them less aware of how important it is to eat healthy food. Indonesian athletes who aren't performing well are doing so because they aren't getting enough healthy nutrition. This is because their teachers don't know how nutrition can help athletes perform better. The study aimed at investigating the relationship between nutritional knowledge and macronutrient intake with the nutritional status of athletes. Analytic descriptive research with a cross sectional approach. There were 94 athletes as the population, and a sample of 63 athletes in the dormitory involved, through simple random sampling method. The instruments used were the respondent's identity, nutritional knowledge questionnaire, 3x24 hour food recall, height measurement using microtoice and weight using digital scales, then the analysis of the data was conducted with 3 stages, namely univariate, bivariate analysis with chi square test and multivariate analysis with linear regression test. The results identified a relationship between nutritional knowledge (p=0.012) and macronutrient intake, namely energy intake (p=0.029), protein intake (p=0.001) with the nutritional status of athletes. Nevertheless, the study findings revealed no significant relation between fat consumption (p=0.781) and carbohydrate intake (p=0.927) and the nutritional condition of athletes. The most influential factor on nutritional status is energy intake. The greater the amount of energy intake, the greater the tendency to have more nutritional status. Therefore, it is crucial to implement the nutrition education to athletes in relation with nutritional intake and feeding based on balanced nutrition menu guidelines according to the needs of athletes.

Abstract

The coverage of exclusive breastfeeding for infants in Indonesia still needs to be higher compared to the national target (80%). Low coverage of exclusive breastfeeding is a risk factor for various nutritional problems in toddlers. The causes of failure of exclusive breastfeeding are multifactorial, including risky pregnancy. This study aims to determine the association of risky pregnancies with the failure of exclusive breastfeeding using national data from the 2017 Indonesian Health Demographic Survey (IDHS) with a cross-sectional design. The study sample that met the criteria was 6,689 mothers with children aged 6-23 months. The independent variable is risky pregnancy (parity, pregnancy spacing, age during pregnancy), and the dependent variable is the failure of exclusive breastfeeding. Data analysis using multivariate logistic regression. The results found that only 26.2% of exclusive breastfeeding practices. Risky pregnancy is associated with the failure of exclusive breastfeeding. Mothers with too much parity risked 1,195 times, mothers with primiparous parity risked 1,716 times, too close birth spacing risked 1,210 times, and too young mothers were 1,267 times more likely not to exclusively breastfeed than mothers who had normal pregnancies after controlling for the area of residence. It is necessary to improve health promotion programs to the public regarding the importance of offering exclusive breastfeeding to infants and improving fertility characteristics.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Age 6-24 months is a critical period for experiencing nutrition and health problems, especially among children who are stunted. Stunting children need to recover their nutritional status through appropriate interventions to be able to pursue their growth. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of nutrition assistance on breastfeeding and complementary feeding on the length growth of children aged 6-24 with stunting. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study. A sample of 60 intervention and 60 control groups were divided into North Bengkulu District and Timor Tengah Selatan (TTS) District. Nutrition assistance for 6 months (July-November 2019) was carried out by 10 trained cadres. Each cadre is responsible for 6 stunted children aged 6-24 months (3 children received assistance and 3 children with standard services from the public health center). Data analysis uses independent t-test and dependent t-test after passing the homogeneity test phase of the proportion of sample characteristics and normality of the data. Results: We found that assistance for breastfeeding and complementary feeding for mothers with stunting children aged 6-24 months was effective in increasing the growth of the child's body length. As many as 53.3% of stunted children in North Bengkulu District and 36.7% in TTS District showed growth after nutrition assistance. Conclusion: It is recommended that the implementation of a nutrition assistance model be accompanied by continuous family and community empowerment in the recovery of nutritional status, especially in families with stunted children aged 6-24 months.
