Abstract

Reading interest among primary school-aged children has become critical in Indonesia's education field. One initiative to foster children's interest in reading is the Community Reading Gardens (Taman Bacaan Masyarakat, TBM). This study seeks to explore the efforts of TBM Al-Istiqomah to enhance children's interest in reading in Cileunyi Kulon Village, Bandung Regency. The research employs a qualitative approach conducted at TBM Al-Istiqomah, Cileunyi Kulon, Bandung Regency, from January to April 2023. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis follows the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that TBM Al-Istiqomah has implemented various strategies to improve reading interest among primary school-aged children, such as providing engaging reading materials, organizing appealing and interactive literacy activities, and collaborating with PKBM institutions and other non-formal educational organizations. However, several supporting factors and challenges have been identified in these efforts, including limited funding for development, a lack of human resources, and difficulties in establishing partnerships with local government authorities

Abstract

The Fourth Industrial Revolution demands vocational graduates possess strong discipline alongside technical competencies, yet 25% experience employment difficulties due to weak work ethic rather than skill deficiencies. This qualitative multiple case study examined character education management at SMKN 1 Pangandaran and SMKS Taruna Bangsa Ciamis through observations, interviews, and document analysis. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's framework with triangulation for validity. Management functions operated systematically: planning established four discipline indicators (punctuality, SOP/safety compliance, task responsibility, professional communication); organizing created cross-functional coordination with clear role delineation; implementation combined school-based habituation through Teaching Factory with authentic industrial practice during internships; evaluation employed the CIPP model using rubrics, logbooks, and industry reports. Punctuality improved from 68% to 89%, and safety compliance increased from 72% to 94% during internships. Barriers including teacher preparation gaps, cultural differences, and short internship duration were addressed through professional development, graduated transitions, and standardized assessment instruments. Findings demonstrate that systematic management frameworks effectively bridge school-industry contexts for discipline formation. The study extends social learning and experiential learning theories into vocational character education, providing actionable practices for educators and policymakers while identifying needs for longitudinal research and exploration of higher-order professional competencies.

This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection was conducted through interviews, observations, and documentation studies. Data analysis was conducted descriptively through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the management of the religious habituation program is carried out through the stages of planning, organizing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating. In the planning stage, the school sets character building goals, analyzes students' needs and characteristics, and designs religious habituation activities integrated into school activities. Organization is carried out through a clear division of roles and responsibilities between the principal and teachers in a collaborative manner. This program is implemented routinely and continuously through various religious activities supported by teacher role models and active student participation. Monitoring and evaluation are carried out continuously through observation of student behavior with an emphasis on guidance and continuous improvement. Challenges faced include limited time, differences in student backgrounds, and a lack of continuity in the religious education program between the school and families. Efforts made by the school include strengthening teacher commitment, implementing a personal approach to students, and increasing collaboration with parents. Overall, the management of the religious habituation program provides a positive contribution in consistently forming the character and integrity of students, which is integrated into the school culture.

Abstract

This study explores the role of principals’ leadership in enhancing the professional competence of teachers in special education (Sekolah Luar Biasa/SLB) in Indonesia. Teacher competence in special education is a critical factor in ensuring the quality of learning for students with disabilities. At the same time, school principals hold a central position in creating supportive environments for teachers' professional growth. Despite the theoretical consensus regarding the importance of instructional and transformational leadership, a significant gap remains in understanding how these leadership practices are operationalized in resource-constrained special education contexts. To address this issue, the research employed a qualitative multiple-case study design at SLB A YPKR Cicalengka, Bandung Regency, and SLB BC Al Barkah, Garut Regency. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, and subsequently analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model with source and methodological triangulation to ensure data validity. The findings reveal that effective leadership in SLB is not confined to a single model but rather a dynamic integration of participative, instructional, transformational, and distributed approaches. Principals demonstrated adaptability by combining planning, organizing, implementation, and evaluation functions with collaborative and reflective practices. Limited financial and infrastructural resources were addressed through creative strategies, internal capacity building, and partnerships with external stakeholders. Importantly, principals’ leadership fostered teacher motivation, ownership, and commitment, resulting in sustainable professional development. In conclusion, the study emphasizes that visionary and adaptive school leadership is essential for enhancing teacher competence in special education. The implications extend to leadership preparation programs and educational policy, underscoring the need for context-sensitive, holistic leadership models to improve the quality of education for children with special needs.
