Abstract

This study examines strengthening religious moderation through religious education based on the local wisdom among the Pesantren in Madura and Tapal Kuda regions. This study is a field study conducted based on qualitative research. Based on the analysis of field data, this study found that strengthening religious moderation through local wisdom values of pesantren in Madura and the Tapal Kuda region requires three elements, namely the existence of kiai, santri, and alumni, along with their social networks. These three elements are inseparable from Islamic boarding school life in educational activities and preaching. In strengthening religious moderation, all three play central and strategic roles and functions. They generally carry out these roles and functions in two approaches at once. First, the structural approach is carried out by strengthening moderation at the institutional level, in this case, education, and implementing teaching activities. Second, the cultural approach that strengthens religious moderation among pesantren in Tapal Kuda is carried out through cultural methods. The artistic process in question includes two things, namely religious understanding, and rituals in pesantren, where the majority of religious paradigms among pesantren in the Tapal Kuda region of Madura adhere to the knowledge of Ahlu sunah wal jamaah an-Nahdliyyah.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the shift in the meaning and use of batik sarongs, from a tradition initially associated with women to a more dominant identity used by men in Madurese society, particularly in the Pamekasan region. This change is analyzed through the perspective of the sociology of Islamic religious education, emphasizing the role of religion, local culture, and the educational process in shaping gender identity. This study uses a qualitative approach using interview, observation, and documentation study methods. The results show that batik sarongs are no longer only understood as a symbol of traditional culture, but also as a symbol of piety, modesty, and male religious identity, especially in the context of Islamic boarding schools and Islamic education. This shift is influenced by the process of internalizing Islamic values through formal and non-formal education, as well as a reinterpretation of dress norms in Madurese society. This study concludes that the changing use of batik sarongs reflects the dynamic interaction between culture, religion, and education in shaping the construction of gender identity in Madurese Muslim society.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the need to strengthen religious moderation amid the challenges of globalization, intolerance, and radicalism that threaten national harmony. Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), as the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, has a unique tradition and contributes to strengthening national values. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the three main traditions of NU, namely religious practices (tahlilan, maulid, istighotsah), Islamic boarding schools and Bahtsul Masail, as well as the discourse of Islam Nusantara, play a role in building Islamic moderation in Indonesia. The research method used is qualitative-descriptive with a literature study approach that examines scientific literature, including journal articles, books, and relevant official documents. The results of the study show that NU practices serve to maintain social harmony, Islamic boarding schools and Bahtsul Masail develop adaptive scientific traditions, and Islam Nusantara provides a contextual framework of thought. In conclusion, NU traditions are not only historical legacies, but also actual instruments in maintaining national unity and responding to contemporary religious issues.

Abstract

This study critically addresses the marginalized position of environmental concerns in mainstream Islamic da'wah discourse by examining ecological da'wah as a systematically underdeveloped yet theologically grounded dimension of Islamic da'wah. Although environmental ethics is well established in Islamic theology, its translation into a da'wah framework remains fragmented and largely normative. In response to this gap, this study aims to reconceptualize ecological da'wah not merely as moral exhortation but as an integrative da'wah paradigm that connects theology, ethics, and socio-ecological practices. Using a qualitative sociological approach, this study draws on field observations, interviews, and empirical data from ongoing da'wah practices in the community, which are then analyzed using thematic content analysis techniques. Rather than rehashing established ethical concepts, this analysis critically reinterprets the key theological principles of khalifah (stewardship), amanah (trust), and mizan (cosmic balance) as operational categories for da'wah engagement with the ecological crisis. The findings of this study indicate that ecological da'wah has strategic potential to reshape religious communication by embedding environmental responsibility within theocentric moral reasoning and lived religious practices. However, the study also identifies structural and discursive constraints, including the dominance of anthropocentric models of da'wah and the absence of institutionalized ecological narratives within da'wah agendas. This study contributes to da'wah scholarship by offering a conceptual framework for ecological da'wah as a transformative and context-responsive model of Islamic da'wah. By repositioning environmental preservation as an integral component of religious responsibility, this study advances a theoretically grounded approach that enhances the relevance of Islamic da'wah in addressing contemporary global ecological challenges.

Abstract

The contextualization of shura in democracy can be seen from the extra-curricular activities of the students in the election of the Student Council Chair in educational institutions under the auspices of Islamic boarding schools in Madura. In general, students have recognized and implemented a democratic system and used this in electing leaders in educational institutions. This demonstration party has educated students to accept and participate in all programs planned by the winning contestants at the democratic party at educational institutions which are held every year. The kaintan with this is that the students have carried out the requirements to become leaders, one of which is through the selection process with representatives from still classes and juran who have shown themselves to run as contestants. This is where the process of ahl al hal wal al aqd is implemented in the life of students in Islamic boarding schools to determine the leader in the organization.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines how Islam–science integration is formulated and enacted in the curriculum and instructional practices of Al-Falah Pesantren, Pamekasan. This study employed a qualitative single-case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 informants, five observations of classroom and academic activities, and analysis of institutional documents, from March to May 2026. The findings show that integration operates through connected educational layers: a tawhid-based epistemological vision, a hybrid curriculum, classroom and laboratory learning, Bahtsul Masail, digital leadership, and institutional support. Integration became most visible when classical Islamic texts, Qur’anic reflection, empirical observation, scientific reasoning, and ethical judgment were jointly used to address authentic issues such as environmental care, laboratory discipline, health, digital transactions, and social responsibility. However, the implementation remained uneven across subjects and educational levels, particularly in teacher collaboration, interdisciplinary planning, integrative assessment, and institutional evaluation. The study's conclusion is that the coexistence of religious and science subjects does not automatically result in substantive integration unless the institutional vision is translated into curriculum content, teaching strategies, learning activities, and assessable competencies.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the genealogy of kiai authority in Madura and to analyze how such authority is sustained through pesantren institutions and subsequently transformed into educational governance and local political leadership. Employing a qualitative library research design with a conceptual and interpretive analytical approach, data were systematically collected from Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Dimensions, and Crossref databases. Relevant publications were selected through a rigorous screening procedure based on thematic relevance, academic credibility, duplication, publication period, and conceptual contribution. The selected sources were subjected to analytical coding, thematic categorization, comparative synthesis, and critical interpretation through the integrative lens of Weber’s theory of authority, Gramsci’s theory of hegemony, and contemporary Islamic educational leadership perspectives. The findings reveal that kiai authority in Madura is genealogically rooted in pesantren traditions, personal charisma, religious knowledge, santri networks, community trust, and local cultural values. Pesantren function not merely as institutions for Islamic knowledge transmission but as comprehensive centers of educational leadership, character formation, moral socialization, and authority reproduction. The authority of kiai further extends into local politics through moral legitimacy, social mobilization, cultural influence, and the mediation of relations between society and political elites. This study implies that pesantren-based leadership offers a significant model of value-based educational governance that can strengthen character education, ethical leadership, social cohesion, and community-oriented development in contemporary Islamic education.
