Abstract

ABSTRACT   This article describes a comparison of mathematics learning methods between Japan and Indonesia. In Japan, structured and systematic approaches such as Rikai Kansatsu and Kōryū are applied, with an emphasis on observation, deep understanding, and collaborative work in solving mathematical problems. Teachers in Japan also apply problem solving and open ended approaches, which encourage students to think critically, creatively and independently. In addition, the implementation of lesson study as a scientific activity that involves teachers in developing the theory and practice of mathematics learning is a strong foundation for the method in Japan. On the other hand, in Indonesia, there is a shift towards more inclusive and creative learning approaches, such as the Scientific approach and the Concrete Representational Abstract (CRA) approach. Teachers in Indonesia emphasize more on achieving individual and classical student competencies, with a strong orientation towards learning outcomes. Although the concept of lesson study has been implemented in Indonesia, there are still differences in the development of theories and the application of learning methods. Awareness, support, and collaboration among teachers are key to developing and expanding the application of lesson study and improving the quality of mathematics learning in Indonesia. With increased teacher understanding and participation, the potential of lesson study development and implementation in Indonesia can be optimized to improve students' understanding of mathematics and critical thinking skills.

Abstract

The need for innovative approaches in mathematics learning has become increasingly urgent to address the challenges of conceptual understanding and foster sustainable learning interest among students. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational video game "Corner" in enhancing students' mathematical conceptual understanding and strengthening their interest in learning mathematics. The research employed a quasi-experimental method with a Non-equivalent (Pre-test and Post-test) Control Group Design. The instruments used included a mathematical conceptual understanding test and a mathematics learning interest questionnaire. Data were analyzed using independent sample t-tests and paired sample t-tests to compare the results between the experimental and control groups. The findings revealed that the use of the educational game "Corner" significantly improved students' mathematical conceptual understanding. Additionally, there was an increase in students' interest in learning mathematics, as indicated by significant differences between the pre-test and post-test results in the experimental group compared to the control group. These findings suggest that game-based educational media is not only effective in helping students grasp mathematical concepts but also motivates them to become more active and enthusiastic in learning mathematics. Therefore, the use of game-based learning media such as "Corner" can be adopted by educators as an effective strategy to improve the quality of mathematics education in schools.

Abstract

Purposes: This research investigates the extent to which personality traits, as defined by the MBTI framework, influence students' ability to reason statistically in the context of a mathematical statistics course. The study particularly focuses on examining how distinct cognitive tendencies, categorized within the MBTI’s four dimensions, affect students’ capabilities in understanding, organizing, presenting, and interpreting statistical information. Method: A qualitative case study approach was adopted involving eleven students enrolled in a mathematics education program at a higher education institution in Indonesia. Participants completed the MBTI questionnaire to determine their personality classifications. In addition, a statistical reasoning assessment was administered to evaluate their cognitive strategies across established reasoning indicators. Observational data and written explanations were also gathered to enrich the analysis. The findings were interpreted through descriptive qualitative techniques, with triangulation applied to ensure accuracy and credibility. Findings: The analysis revealed that students identified with the STJ and ESTJ personality types exhibited more proficient reasoning patterns, particularly in applying logical steps and organizing data systematically. On the other hand, participants with NTJ or ISFJ traits showed challenges in representing data visually and articulating their thought processes clearly. Interestingly, the Introvert and Extrovert distinction did not appear to influence performance in a meaningful way. Significance: This study offers insights into the role of personality in learning statistics. It emphasizes the need for differentiated instructional methods. Adapting teaching strategies to accommodate varied personality profiles may enhance student engagement and conceptual mastery in statistical learning environments.
