Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the dominant types of word-formation process of slang words found in the Looper movie script. The type of this research is descriptive research. This research used the theory about word-formation by Mattiello (2008) and Yule (2010). In the finding, the researcher found five types of slang word-formation processes in the Looper movie script. They were blending, clipping, coinage, compounding, and variation. The researcher found 12 slang words with blending type (25.53%), 9 slang words with clipping type (19.14%), 12 slang words with coinage type (25.53%), 6 slang words with compounding type (12.76%), and 8 slang words with variation type (17.02%). The most dominant type of slang word-formation in the Looper movie script is blending and coinage.Key words: Language variation, slang word, word formation

Abstract

Indonesia grows in relation to Islamic values in daily life, because Islam is the dominant religion in this country. Based on these conditions, in education Islamic values are important to be instilled by teachers into the lesson, because they can build good character for students. This article aims at discussing teachers’ perception about the integration of Islamic values foreign language learning in Indonesian context. A descriptive study with a questionnaire collection technique was used in this research. A questionnaire sheet was developed via google form and distributed through the WhatsApp   group of English subjects teacher association (MGMP) in West Sumatera. The questionnaire was responded to by 70 (seventy) teachers. The results showed that the teachers want to integrate Islamic values in teaching material. However, the teaching materials that contain it are not easy to find. Then, the teachers also perceived that integrating Islamic values into teaching learning process can build student character.

Abstract

An authentic assessment is a form of assessment to assess students' ability to use the language they learn in the actual context. An authentic assessment can be in the form of assessing the ability to understand what other people say both listening and reading.  The implementation of authentic assessment is expected to improve the quality of assessment during the process of learning English. The researcher conducted the implementation of authentic assessment on reading comprehension in the tenth grade. This research used descriptive quantitative research. The population and sample of this study were tenth-grade students and English teachers at SMAN 7 Padang who taught in the tenth grade. The research instruments were a questionnaire, documentation, and interview. The result of the study found that (1)there were four forms of authentic assessment on reading comprehension used by the teacher at SMAN 7 Padang, (2)the level of difficulties in implementing the authentic assessment on reading comprehension is easy by the students, (3) the problem faced by the teacher in implementing the authentic assessment are students’ understanding about the authentic assessment and the differences between the curriculum in 2013.

Abstract

AbstractPenelitian ini menganalisa metode dan teknik menerjemaah yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa yang teregistrasi tahun ajaran 2013 di Jurusan Bahasa Inggris program studi Pendidikan Bahasa inggris. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui metode dan teknik penerjemaahan yang paling banyak digunakan oleh mahasiswa Bahasa inggris program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dalam menerjemaahkan cerita naratif pendek berjudul “Pinocchio”. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah menunjukkan mahasiswa Bahasa Inggris program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris menggunakan Communicative method sebagai metode yang sering digunakan untuk menerjemaahkan cerita pendek “Pinocchio”. Sedangkan teknik menerjemaahkan yang ditemukan sebagai berikut:  Establish Equivalance  (92,4%).reduction (3,32%) .adaption (2,52%) .addition (0,65%). Generalization (0,04%) .transposition (0,11%). description (0,11%) .ommision (0,34%). Berdasarkan keterkaitan antara metode dan teknik dapat dilihat bahwa mahasiswa  sebagai sampel sangat cenderung melakukan penerjemaahan yang berfokus pada bahasa sasaran. Hasil dari penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa Bahasa Inggris sudah dapat melakukan penerjemaahan dengan baik dan sesuai dengan tujuan dari teks. Namun, ada hal yang perlu dipertimbangkan kembali dari hasil penelitian ini yaitu kemampuan siswa dalam penerjemaahan teks yang tujuan dan jenis yang berbeda, Sehingga mahasiswa Bahasa Inggris dapat menerjemaahkan dengan teknik yang berbeda beda sesuai dengan teks dan tujuan penerjemaahan

Abstract

A number of morphological errrors can be found in students’ English compositions of application letter. The errors were possibly caused by a lack of students understanding about the rules in morphology.The purposes of this research were to explain the (1) morphological errors, (2) the frequencies of morphological errors,  and (3) the sources of errors in students’ English compositions of application letter. The research applied a descriptive method. The data from students’ compositions of application were collected by using documentation technique. The research results indicated that there were two categories of morphological error, specifically noun morphological errors (indicated by the problems with noun plural –s) and verb morphological errors indicated by the  problems with present third person singular –s). The most common errors were noun morphological errors. Furthermore, there are two sources of errors found in the application letters of students. They were interlingual errors (transfer of morphological elements) and intralingual & development errors. (overgeneralization & ignorance of rule restriction).

Abstract

This research is a descriptive research which is intended to reveal the cultural aspects and how cultural contents are presented in reading passages. The data in this research was obtained from the English textbooks entitled Bahasa Inggris for Senior High School grade X-XII written based on curriculum 2013 by Kemendikbud RI. This research employed the descriptive approach with the instrument was the cultural content checklist. After conducting the research, the cultural aspects found in the reading passages were religion and religious rituals; history and politics; foods and drinks; ecology; economy; leisure time, music, and arts; dressing; science and literature; social behaviour, and etiquette; family and male-female relationship; naming systems; geographical names; cultural products; and tribe. Based on the data in this research, it was revealed that Indonesian cultural contents were dominantly used in the reading passages. Furthermore, the presentation of cultural contents was found in forms of monologues, dialogues, and pictures. Since Indonesian cultural contents dominated the reading passages, the evaluation towards these three textbooks needs to be conducted. The cultural contents of the target culture need to be added into the reading passages.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out types of process and the most dominant process types of transitivity system, and to find out types of circumstances and the most dominant types of circumstances in Hortatory Exposition Text written by the third year student of English Education Program at Universitas Negeri Padang. The data of this research were collected through a writing test on hortatory exposition. It found 866 clauses that were obtained from 23 texts of hortatory exposition texts. The result of this research was that six types of processes occurred in the text. There were material process (59%), mental process (12%), relational process (23%), behavioral process (2%), verbal process (2%), and existential process (3%). It was found that types of material processes were the dominant process found in students' writing. Also, the result of this research found eight types of circumstances, there were Extent (6%), Location (36%), Manner (24%), Cause (26%), Accompaniment (4%), role (2%), matter (1%) and Angel (1%). The dominant types of circumstances were Location. It indicates that the characteristics of hortatory exposition text are using the material process and circumstances of Location.

Abstract

This research is quasi-experimental research is aimed to find out the effect of video blog as media on students’ speaking skill and the effectiveness of video blog as media on improving students’ speaking skill at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The instrument of this research is speaking test that is conducted twice, pre-test and post-test. The test had 3 topics that student should pick one of them, the test will be rate by using rating score which adapted from Brown and Blaz. Based on the test data analysis by using independent sample test in SPSS 25, it state that the students’ who are taught by using video blog as media are better than students’ who are taught by using conventional media. The significance of the test is 0.000 which is lower than the significance level that is 0.05 with 5% of degree. Furthermore, is also found that the students’ score is improving especially for students in experimental class which gained 10.8 of their average score. . Key words: Speaking, Video Blog.

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa tentang penggunaan bahasa Inggris dikelas bilingual dan mengetahui penyebab bagus dan buruk persepsi siswa tersebut. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas bilingual tahun ajaran 2012/2013 di SMP N 1 2X11 Enam Lingkung. Sampel berjumlah sebanyak 74 siswa diambil dengan menggunakan teknik total sampling. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan angket dan interview. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 43 siswa memiliki persepsi buruk (poor), 30 siswa memiliki persepsi bagus (good) dan 1 siswa memiliki persepsi sangat bagus (very good). Diperoleh skor rata-rata yaitu 2.63. Skor ini menunjukkan bahwa persepsi siswa bagus (good). 6 siswa yang memiliki persepsi bagus dan buruk di interview untuk mengetahui alasan kenapa mereka memiliki persepsi yang seperti itu. Hasil interview menunjukkan bahwa siswa yang memiliki persepsi bagus menyenangi pembelajaran yang menggunakan bahasa Inggris di kelas bilingual. Jadi, dari hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa persepsi siswa tentang penggunaan bahasa Inggris di kelas bilingual bagus.Key Words: Students’ perception, Bilingual class

Abstract

AbstractPenelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian (1) Apa saja teknik penilaian yang digunakan guru Bahasa Inggris di SMPN 1 2X11 Kayutanam berdasarkan kurikulum 2013, dan (2) Bagaimana guru Bahasa Inggris di SMPN 1 2X11 Kayutanam menerapkan teknik penilaian berdasarkan kurikulum 2013. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif. Data dikumpulkan melalui telaah dokumen serta angket guru dan siswa. Data dari hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: (1) Teknik penilaian yang digunakan adalah tes tertulis, tes lisan, penugasan, unjuk kerja, proyek dan portofolio. Meskipun seluruh teknik penilaian digunakan oleh guru, akan tetapi tidak semuajenis teknik penilaian yang digunakan. Untuk teknik tes tertulis guru hanya menggunakan jenis soal pilihan, isian ganda dan esai. Untuk penugasan, guru memilih penugasan secara berkelompok. Sementara untuk unjuk kerja, guru sering meminta siswa untuk berbicara daripada menulis, dan (2) Implementasi teknik penilaian berdasarkan angket guru dan siswa masing-masing adalah 80,16% dan 65,94% dengan kategori baik
