Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with affixation of Karo Language in forming verb. The objectives of this study are to describe the morphological process of affixation in forming verbin Karo language as well as to describe the function and the grammatical meanings of affixation in forming verb in Karo language. The method of research is library research by reading some books related to this study. The instruments of collection data used tape recorder. The technique of analysis data is documentary technique namely identifying the data, classifying the data and finding the dominant type of affixation in Karo language. The findings showed that there are four kinds of Karonese affixation in forming verb namely: (1). Prefix occurs 51 (48%). (2). Infixes occurs 3 (2%), (3). Suffixes occurs 43 (30%) and (4). Confixes occurs 18 (10%) and the total occorences is 119. So the dominant type of affixation found in Karonese in forming verb is Prefix occurs 51(48%). The function of affixation in Karo language are derivational and inflectional, derivational is change the meaning after attached by affix to the stem for example: {er-} + lajang → /erlajang/, /lajang/ means ‘alone’, prefix {er-} is inserted, it becomes /erlajang/ means ‘going’ and inflectional is does not change the meanings after attached by affix to the stem for example: ayak + {-i}  → /ayaki/ , /ayak/ means ‘running’, suffix {-i} inserted, it becomes /ayaki/ means “running” . The grammatical meanings of affixation in Karo language in forming verb are process and activity for example /ersada/ ‘gathered’  meaning of affix {er-} is as process and /erjuma/ ‘ farming’ meaning of affix {er-} is as activity .

Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis deals with the English deixis. The objectives of this study are to analyze type of deixis and to find out the most dominant type of deixis in the political article of Jakarta Post. This study was conducted by using descriptive quantitative design. The source of data was taken from the article of Jakarta Post and five articles are taken as the samples. Documentary technique is used in collecting data. The findings showed that there are five types of deixis found in The Jakarta Post article, namely Person deixis, 99 times occur (42,85%), Place deixis, 8 times occur (3,46%), Time deixis 43 times occur (18,61%), Discourse deixis 42 times occur (18,18), and the last is social deixis 39 times occur (16,88%). From the analysis from deixis is the most types of The Jakarta Post can be found. So it can be said that The Jakarta Post tends to use person deixis as the dominant type compound an another types. Abstract

This study is concerned at finding the meanings of Tepak Sirih tradition in Tanjungbalai Malay wedding ceremony. either it is the meaning of offering tepak sirih and the meanings that found in all objects that needed to practice tepak sirih tradition. This study also concerned on how and why the meanings realized in practicing tepak sirih. The research method used in this paper is descriptive qualitative method which is related to the grounded theory where the meanings are elaborated by using Roland Barthes’s Semiology Theory. The interview was assisted by two interviewees who are expert about Tanjungbalai Malay culture and tradition and they are the speakers in every ceremony of Malay in Tanjungbalai. The results showed that offering tepak sirih have different meaning in different event. Merisik, meminang and Hempang pintu are three events that use tepak sirih tradition in Tanjungbalai Malay wedding but only hempang pintu which uses tepak sirih in the wedding ceremony.  The writer found There were 11 dennotative meanings, 7 connotative meanings and two myths in all objects that needed in doing tepak Sirih tradition. The reason Tepak sirih is seen as the tool of communication or the opening speech in Tanjungbalai Malay wedding ceremony lies on the history of Tanjung balai Malay living in the past.Keywords: Semiotic or Semiology, Tepak sirih, Tanjungbalai Malay

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research focused on semiotic used in A Mild Go Ahead. The aims are to find the use of semiotic and identify the meaning in A Mild Go Ahead.The data werethree television advertisements from A Mild Go Ahead entitled “Satu Aksi = Segalanya, We Are One and Free, and Orang Pemimpi. The researchwas conducted by using descriptive qualitative research.The findings show that there were three elements of semiotic used, such as representamen (qualisign, sinsign, legisign), object (icon, index, symbol), and interpretant (rheme, decisign, argument),which then devided into 9 types of semiotic;Qualisign (0),Legisign (9), Sinsign (34), Icon (12), Index (27), Symbol (4), Rheme (9), Decisign (19) and Argument (16). The most dominant type of semiotic in the advertisements is sinsign, and it means that A Mild Go Aheadpersuade their audiences by showing the real example of their products. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research deals with Theme and Rheme in Editorials texts of The Jakarta Post newspaper. The aims are to find out the optional element dominates the structure of theme in the editorials of The Jakarta Post newspaper and to describe where the optional dominant element occurs. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from three different editions of The Jakarta Post editorials which is publish on January 2014. The findings indicate that conjunction was an element dominantly used in textual theme because there were so many compound clauses and there were two or more clauses in coordination relation or dependency on another. In interpersonal theme, adjunct was an element dominantly used that is means that a prepositional phrase has its own internal structure containing complement within it and preposition is put at first position of a clause which is called Theme. Conjunction and adjunct were dominantly used when the editors tells their argumentation, comment and their assessment of the news, because of the using of colloquialism or spoken language in editorials of the Jakarta Post newspaper.     Keyword        : Theme, Rheme, Editorial

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with an analysis of conversational maxims in Dr. Oz talk show. The objectives of the study are (1) to find out the types of maxim that used in Dr. Oz talk show, (2) to find out the most dominant type of maxim used in Dr. Oz talk show, and (3) to give the reasons why the most type of maxim used in Dr. Oz talk show by using Grice’s theory of Cooperative Principle. The study was conducted by qualitative method. The date were obtained from the video and transcription of two episodes of “Dr. Oz” program, namely “Celine Dion and Dr.Oz One on One” and “GMO Foods: Are They Dangerous to Your Health?”. The data were analyzed by applying qualitative content analysis. The findings indicated that there are four types of maxim occurred in the Dr. Oz talk show, namely:  maxim of quantity 28 utterances (47,45%), maxim of quality6 utterances (10,26%), maxim of relevant 14 utterances (23,72%), and maxim of manner 11 utterances (18,64%). The dominant type of maxim appeared is maxim of quantity occurs with 28 utterances (47,45%) from 59 utterances. The reasons of the dominant type of maxim appeared because the information of interviewees was informative as required from the interviewer.   Keyword          :Pragmatics, Cooperative principle, maxims, Talk show
