Abstract

The conversion of peat soils to agricultural uses has been thought to increase CO2 emission due to several factors, including fertilization. However, evidence on the effect of fertilization on CO2emissionsfrompeat soils is rareand often inconsistence. We measured the effects of different types of fertilizer, including N, P and K sources, and clay as an ameliorant on CO2 emission from a bare peat soil in Lubuk Ogong, Riau Province. Nutrients were added in the following combinations: 0 (unfertilized plot), N source (urea), slow-release N (slow release urea), N and Psource (Urea+SP-36), N, P and K sources (urea+SP-36+KCl) and combined NPK-Clay. Fertilization resulted in a decreasein CO2 emissions compared to that prior to fertilization except when slow-release urea was applied. Decreasing of CO2 emissions was probably due to pH-related effects because the pH in the N treatment was lower than in both the control and the unfertilized plot. A decreasein the level of CO2 emissions among the treatments followed the order NPK-Clay>NP>NPK>urea>slow-release urea. Covariance analyses showed that the difference in CO2 emissions prior to treatment was not significant. The application of individual and combined treatments of N, P, K and NPK mixed with 5 Mg ha-1 clay led to significantly reduced CO2 emissions from bare peat soil in Lubuk Ogong, Riau Province. In addition to fertilization, the water table depth was the only parameter that significantly affected the CO2 emissions (P<0.05). We conclude that the application of nutrient combinations, including N, P, K and clay, could reduce CO2 emissions because these treatments maintain a balanced nutritional condition in the soil with respect to the microbial activity. Keywords: Amelioration, CO2 emission, fertilization, tropical peat soils

Abstract

Background: The Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire was used to measure quality of life (QoL) in Indonesia for patients with various conditions. However, its validity and reliability, specifically for patients with conjunctival tumors, remain understudied. Given the limited research on health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in this patient population, our research aims to fill this gap by validating the SF-36 specifically for conjunctival tumor patients. Method: This observational, cross-sectional study recruited patients with conjunctival tumors receiving treatment at the Department of Ophthalmology, Dr Moewardi Hospital, between May and July 2024, using consecutive sampling. Participants completed the SF-36 questionnaire in the Indonesian context. Validity was assessed through bivariate correlation analysis, examining the Pearson correlation value for each item's questionnaire with the total QoL score. Reliability was determined using scale reliability analysis, focusing on Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The data was processed using IBM SPSS version 26.Results: The Pearson correlation coefficients for the 36-item scores range from 0.345 to 0.797, indicating a moderate to significant correlation. The scale-level Cronbach's alpha for the comprehensive tool is 0.942, suggesting excellent internal consistency. The SF-36 demonstrated robust reliability across its eight domains, confirming its suitability for measuring QoL in this demographic. These findings confirm that the SF-36 questionnaire in the Indonesian context is highly reliable and has construct validity in conjunctival tumor patients. Conclusion: The SF-36 questionnaire in the Indonesian context exhibits a satisfactory reliability scale and construct validity in assessing the QoL of conjunctival tumor patients. Further research with a larger participant pool is recommended.

Abstract

This study examines the 4-Days a Week (4DWW) system, an innovative work approach that aims to improve employee productivity and well-being. By reviewing the literature on the implementation of 4DWW in different countries and industries, the study identifies the benefits, challenges, and implications of transitioning to this model, particularly in the post-pandemic context. The study used a qualitative literature review, analyzing academic articles and case studies from SCOPUS-indexed journals. This research ranges from the early implementation of 4DWW in the 1970s to recent studies conducted after the COVID-19 pandemic. This research focuses on the impact of 4DWW on employee productivity and well-being. The 4DWW system significantly improves work-life balance and reduces employee stress, leading to better mental health and higher satisfaction. Productivity often increases due to shorter and more focused work periods. However, the challenges include managing work intensity and ensuring operational continuity, particularly in sectors that require a high physical presence. The study offers a comprehensive review of global research on 4DWW, which presents a holistic perspective on its potential benefits and drawbacks. The new thing lies in efforts to overcome the resurgence of interest in 4DWW post-pandemic and evaluate its feasibility in the modern work environment. The findings show that 4DWW can redefine the work paradigm, emphasizing quality over quantity while fostering a healthier and more sustainable work culture. The study underscores the need for legislative support, effective communication strategies, and tailored implementation plans to ensure a successful transition across a wide range of industries.

Abstract

This research discusses risk management faced by submarines and their crews. One of the risks that can occur is that the submarine cannot surface because the steering and propulsion system is not functioning properly. With the submarine unable to surface, it will cause the ship to sit on the seabed. A submarine that experiences an emergency so that it cannot surface is called a Distressed Submarine (DISSUB). Through the FMEA method the author identifies risks and aims to prioritize different causes based on their priority. FMEA itself is a systematic method, so it can find out the root of the problem that actually occurs. By knowing how urgent the priority is, the author can focus on problems that have a big impact on ship operational risks. It is hoped that the research results can be used as recommendations for mitigating risks that occur on submarines, providing a risk management framework for submarines.

Abstract

Buffer zones have a strategic role in managing conflict. Properly determining a buffer zone can help reduce tensions between countries, prevent conflict escalation and provide time and space for the countries involved in diplomacy. In the context of Indonesia, as a large country in the Indo-Pacific region, determining the Indonesian Buffer Zone (IBZ) will have significant implications for regional and global security. Determinations must consider national interests and state security, while on the other hand, it is necessary to consider the interests of neighboring countries and maintain good relations. Therefore, it is important to identify these challenges and see opportunities for multilateral collaboration in determining the Indonesian Buffer Zone. In this research, the author intends to identify and determine perceptions of Indonesia's outer islands, which will be used as buffer zones using the Delphi method. In the next stage, the author will identify the criteria and sub-criteria for Indonesia's outermost islands in the Indo-Pacific Region as well as obtain ranking priorities using the Analytic Network Process (ANP) approach in developing the Indonesian Buffer Zone, so that analysis can be carried out to determine the right strategy for island development the chosen. Where, later the island area selected as the Indonesian buffer zone can be developed and utilized properly and appropriately. Furthermore, in the next stage, the author uses the Game Theory method to describe the comparison of capabilities and threat interactions between the buffer zone of selected outer islands in Indonesia compared to the buffer zone or military bases of countries from the BRICS and AUKUS alliances that have interests in the Indo-Pacific Region. In this research, it is assumed that the two defense pacts have implemented policies or strategies in this game in the context of developing their military strength in the Indo-Pacific Region. So, it is hoped that Indonesia, as the third player, can anticipate appropriate strategies and policies to maintain the stability of the Indo-Pacific Region.
