Abstract

Celastraceae has various benefits. However, research on the identification and distribution of Celastraceae species, particularly in Sumatra, is still limited. Therefore, further studies are needed on the identification and distribution of Celastraceae in Sumatra. The Herbarium of Universitas Andalas (ANDA) has a collection of Celastraceae specimens, most of which have not been identified to the species level. Given the high diversity of flora in Indonesia, especially in Sumatra, identifying Celastraceae species is an important step to better understand the potential of these plants. This study aims to determine Celastraceae species and their distribution based on specimens from Herbarium ANDA, which is expected to enrich scientific knowledge about biodiversity in Indonesia and open up opportunities for further utilization of the Celastraceae family. The method used is herbarium-based, involving the management of specimens from Herbarium ANDA. This study identified fifteen species from six genera: Celastrus, Euonymus, Glyptopetalum, Lophopetalum, Microtropis, and Salacia. The distribution of Celastraceae plants in Herbarium ANDA covers West Sumatra, North Sumatra, Riau, and one species from Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Most specimens are from West Sumatra, with the distribution detailed as follows: seven species from Padang; two species each from Solok, Lima Puluh Kota, Pasaman, and Mentawai; and one species from Agam and Pasaman Barat. In Riau Province, two species were found in Kampar, and in North Sumatra Province, one species was found in South Tapanuli. Keywords:  Celastraceae, Distribution, Inventory, Species.

Abstract

Heavy-metal contamination remains a critical ecological threat in tropical coastal ecosystems, particularly along the West Coast of Sumatra, where concentrations of Pb, Cd, and Cu frequently approach or exceed biological stress thresholds. This article evaluates marine microalgae as indicators of heavy metal pollution, combining global biomarker evidence with region-specific hydrodynamic conditions, referring referring to publications from the last six years. The findings reveal strong cross-study convergence in microalgal responses, including chlorophyll degradation, photosynthetic inhibition, oxidative stress, and antioxidant enzyme activation. These biomarker patterns align closely with local observations from Sumatra, indicating that microalgae operate within exposure ranges known to induce sublethal physiological impairment. Hydrodynamic modulation driven by monsoon cycles further amplifies metal bioavailability, producing alternating acute and chronic stress regimes that chemical monitoring alone often fails to detect. This review provides the first integrated assessment linking microalgal biomarker evidence with monsoon-regulated metal dynamics in Indonesian coastal waters. By synthesizing mechanistic, ecological, and environmental data, the study establishes a robust scientific foundation for adopting microalgae as a core component of early-warning systems and coastal biomonitoring frameworks. The findings also highlight methodological gaps and propose future directions to strengthen monitoring programs within a One Health perspective

Abstract

This study aims to find out the description of the application, children's receptive language skills before and after the application of educational game media, as well as the influence of educational game media on children aged 5-6 years, the description of children's receptive language skills before and after the application of digital educational game media in children aged 5-6 years. The type of research used is quantitative research, with an Ex Post Facto approach. The data collection technique uses performance tests, observations, and documentation. The data analysis technique uses a data normality test. The results of the study show that first, the application of educational game media in children aged 5-6 years shows that children's ability to carry out lessons with the use of educational game media is in the category of high tendencies, with most children who have scores being around the average score. This condition shows the existence of a representative nature between children aged 5-6 years which is used as a research sample., second, children's receptive language skills before using educational game media can be relatively low because there is no special media that significantly helps the development of receptive language skills of children aged 5-6 years. After using educational game media in learning, the receptive language ability of children aged 5-6 years experienced significant changes based on the results of the study stating that the positive influence given from educational game media showed that learning with educational game media had a significant effect on the receptive language ability of children aged 5-6 years. A positive regression coefficient of 1.920 indicates that any increase in the application of learning through educational game media is followed by an improvement in children's receptive language skills.

Abstract

Picture storybooks not only attract children's attention with colorful illustrations, but can also improve language skills, especially in terms of literacy. By listening to stories and looking at pictures, children can recognize new words, understand the context in which they are used, and enrich their understanding of the world around them. This study aims to find  out the description of the use of picture storybooks in early childhood, find out the description of literacy skills, and find out the influence of the use of picture storybooks on early childhood literacy skills. This study uses a quantitative approach to determine the effect of the use of picture storybooks on literacy in early childhood. The research design used is Pre Experimental in the form of One Group Pretest-Posstest Design. The data analysis technique used in this study is descriptive statistical analysis, Inferential Statistical Test (Wicoxon Signed rank test). The results of the study showed that the results of the N-Gain analysis, the literacy ability of early childhood after using picture storybooks increased in the medium category, showing moderate development and only 2 children were in the low category. These findings suggest that the use of picture storybooks is effective in improving literacy skills, although the increase has not yet reached the high category. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of picture storybooks has a positive and significant effect on improving early childhood literacy skills. The research is expected to be a reference and open up new study space related to the use of learning media in improving children's abilities. Findings on improving abilities obtained after treatment show that the selection and modification of appropriate learning media has the potential to have a positive impact on children's development.

Abstract

Background: Daemonorops draco (Willd.) Blume, or dragon’s blood rattan, is a dioecious species that produces high-value resin but is increasingly threatened by habitat degradation. Effective cultivation and conservation require early identification of male and female plants, which remains challenging at the seedling stage. Although RAPD markers have been used for sex identification in dioecious plants, studies on D. draco are still limited. Therefore, this study aims to screen sex-specific bands in D. draco using the RAPD approach. Methodology: Samples of six male and six female individuals collected from Jambi were analyzed, with DNA isolated using a modified CTAB protocol and amplified using 44 RAPD primers. The products were separated by 2% agarose gel electrophoresis. Bands were considered sex-specific if they consistently appeared only in one sex and were absent in the other. Findings: Out of the 44 primers tested, 39 successfully amplified D. draco DNA, generating a total of 662 bands. Among them, primer OPA-14 (455 bp) and OPC-19 (310 bp) produced male-specific bands that were consistently present in all male individuals, while primer OPB-10 (850 bp) generated a female-specific band detected in all female individuals. The male-specific 455 bp band from OPA-14 and 310 bp from OPC-19, and the female-specific 850 bp band from OPB-10 were identified. These bands are recommended for development into SCAR markers for early sex identification in D. draco. Contributions: The findings support the provision of male and female seedlings to enhance conservation and cultivation programs
