Abstract

The performance of medical and health care workers is a crucial indicator of hospital service quality. Performance is influenced by various factors, including individual characteristics, organizational conditions, and psychological and work-environment factors. This study aimed to analyze factors associated with the performance of medical and health care workers at RSUD Jend. Ahmad Yani Metro City and to develop a predictive model of performance based on these factors. This study employed a cross-sectional design and involved 205 medical and health care workers. The variables analyzed included sociodemographic characteristics, work motivation, workload, work stress, leadership style, and remuneration. Data were analyzed using bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression. A total of 80% of respondents demonstrated good performance. Bivariate analysis showed significant associations between performance and workload (p < 0.001), work stress (p < 0.001), leadership style (p < 0.001), and remuneration (p < 0.001). The predictive model indicated that respondents exposed to high workload, high work stress, poor leadership style, and low remuneration had a low probability of good performance (5.7%). These findings suggest a cumulative effect of the four factors, which interact and reinforce one another in contributing to decreased performance among medical and health care workers at RSUD Jenderal Ahmad Yani, Metro.

Abstract

Indonesia, as a tropical region, is susceptible to infectious diseases such as Dengue Fever (DHF), which poses a risk of mortality in humans. The management of DHF vectors can be achieved through the application of chemical insecticides; however, these may have detrimental effects on human health. Therefore, a remedy in the form of bioinsecticides is necessary. Tembelekan leaves contain numerous active components, including lantadine, essential oils, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of essential oil from tembelekan leaves (Lantana camara) as a bioinsecticide for killing Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The research involved administering tembelekan leaf essential oil at concentrations of 0.5%, 0.75%, 1%, and 1.25%, with observations conducted at the 1st and 2nd hours, resulting in a mortality rate of approximately 10% to 95%. This indicates that the efficacy of tembelekan leaf essential oil falls within the effective category for exterminating mosquitoes. In conclusion, tembelekan leaf essential oil is effective in exterminating Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Abstract

Abstract

Intestinal protozoan infections are a prevalent public health problem among primary school children in Indonesia, contributing significantly to acute and chronic diarrhoea, malnutrition, and anaemia, which ultimately reduce cognitive performance and learning ability. This literature review aims to identify patterns of knowledge, hygiene behaviour, and environmental and socio-economic factors that serve as key risk predictors for intestinal protozoan infections in this population. Various cohort and cross-sectional studies in Indonesia highlight Giardia duodenalis, Entamoeba histolytica/dispar, and Blastocystis spp. as the dominant pathogens, with the highest prevalence in areas with poor sanitation, limited access to clean water, and high population density. Behavioural factors include a lack of consistency in handwashing with soap (HWS), nail hygiene, and healthy snacking habits, despite the widespread implementation of health education interventions. Multivariate analysis of the literature review indicates a synergistic interaction between low hygiene knowledge and inconsistent practices, coupled with suboptimal environmental sanitation, limited potable water infrastructure, and low socioeconomic status as key determinants. Overall, these findings emphasise the need for a multidimensional intervention approach that integrates behaviour-based education, improved sanitation infrastructure, and socio-economic support to reduce the burden of intestinal protozoan infections in primary school children in Indonesia. Further prospective research is needed to validate causality and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.

Abstract

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection is a disease caused by intestinal nematode worms transmitted through contaminated soil. The STH species that most commonly infect humans include Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Ancylostoma duodenale, and Necator americanus. STH infection remains a global public health problem and is estimated to affect more than 1.5 billion people worldwide, particularly in developing countries with tropical and subtropical climates and inadequate sanitation conditions. Among school-aged children, STH infection is one of the most frequently encountered forms of helminthiasis due to suboptimal hygiene-related behaviors. This infection can lead to various adverse health outcomes, including impaired nutrient absorption, poor nutritional status, reduced learning ability, and delays in children’s growth and development. This literature review aims to provide an overview of the role of personal hygiene, including handwashing with soap, nail hygiene, and the use of footwear, in preventing STH infection among  children. The findings indicate that the prevalence of STH infection among children with poor personal hygiene ranges from 24% to more than 80% in several endemic areas. Children who do not wash their hands with soap are reported to have a 6–9 times higher risk of infection compared to those who practice good hygiene. Poor nail hygiene and not wearing footwear are also associated with an increased risk of infection. This literature review emphasizes that personal hygiene plays a crucial role in preventing STH infection and reinfection among children and should be strengthened as part of school-based promotive and preventive strategies.

Abstract

Intestinal protozoa infections remain a significant public health problem, particularly among school children in developing countries such as Indonesia. These infections contribute substantially to morbidity related to gastrointestinal disorders, including both acute and chronic diarrhea. Transmission of intestinal protozoa generally occurs through the fecal–oral route and is strongly influenced by personal hygiene practices in daily life. This article aims to determine the association between personal hygiene and the risk of intestinal protozoa infections among elementary school children through a literature review method. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases using the keywords personal hygiene, intestinal protozoa infections, and school children, covering publications from 2011 to 2025. Relevant articles were selected and critically analyzed to identify the relationship between personal hygiene and the incidence of intestinal protozoa infections. The findings indicate that poor personal hygiene, particularly the habit of not washing hands with soap before meals and after defecation, inadequate nail hygiene, nail biting, and poor food and beverage hygiene, is significantly associated with an increased risk of intestinal protozoa infections. Several studies also reported a statistically significant higher risk of infection among children with poor personal hygiene compared to those with good hygiene practices. In conclusion, personal hygiene is a significant risk factor for intestinal protozoa infections.

Abstract

Malaria remains a significant global health challenge, with Indonesia ranking second in Asia for the highest number of cases. This study aims to analyze the relationship between community habits and physical house conditions with the incidence of malaria in Sukajaya Lempasing Village, Pesawaran Regency. A quantitative method with a case-control design was employed, involving 128 respondents (64 cases and 64 controls) selected through simple random sampling and neighborhood control. Data were collected via interviews and direct observations using structured questionnaires. Bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test revealed a significant relationship between non-protective habits and malaria incidence (p-value 0.045, OR 2.255), as well as between risky physical house conditions and malaria (p-value 0.043, OR 2.524). Individuals with poor prevention habits and those living in houses without proper ceilings or wire mesh face a higher risk. These findings imply that malaria control in the area requires integrated interventions focusing on individual behavioral changes such as using repellent and long-sleeved clothing alongside physical housing improvements like installing home ventilation screens.
