Abstract

Fruit flies are plant-disturbing insects that harm farmers both qualitatively and quantitatively. Initial symptoms of damage to host plants are marked by the appearance of black spots until the plant parts rot and fall. Fruit flies will inject their eggs until they hatch and become larvae, then the larvae will gnaw the fruit flesh from the inside. Control of fruit flies so far still uses factory chemical insecticides that are not environmentally friendly and leave residues that threaten health. Controlling fruit flies that are environmentally friendly and not at risk of leaving residue can use attractants made from natural ingredients. This study was aimed to determine the effectiveness of the use of natural-based attractants that utilize local raw materials on the allure of fruit fly insects. The materials used in this study were clove leaves, lemongrass leaves, guava leaves, pandan leaves, lime leaves, pineapple and star fruit. The tools used to trap insects use two tools, namely trap bottles and glue. The results showed that the use of lemongrass leaves, clove leaves, guava leaves and pineapple fruit was quite effective in trapping fruit fly pests. Lemongrass leaves more effective than others (27 results in a week). A more effective tool to use is fly glue. The most effective combination is glue with clove leaves, guava leaves, and pineapple (number of results is >100 in a week).

Abstract

Flora and fauna are essential components of ecosystems, playing a vital role in maintaining environmental balance. They also serve as bioindicators for assessing forest health. As a result, many researchers have focused their studies on bioindicators, as evidenced by the extensive literature published in journals. The objective of this Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is to systematically identify, study, evaluate, and interpret data from relevant journal articles. We conducted a search in the Scopus database using the keyword "Bioindicator Forest," which yielded a total of 248 articles. After applying our criteria, we narrowed our research to only 49 articles. To conduct our inclusion and exclusion process, we utilized PRISMA guidelines. Analyzing the publication trend on the topic of forest bioindicators, we observed a decline from 2021 to 2023. However, in 2020, we noted a peak with nine articles published. Regarding the research approach, forest bioindicator studies employ quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. Notably, the most prominent authors in this field are F. Helbing, J. Litavsky, S Stasiov, Dominguez, and De Deyn. The dominant keyword used in these studies is biodiversity, often related to forestry botany. The authors of these articles originate from 29 different countries, with Europe contributing the majority at 62.07%. Collaboration-wise, a significant number of articles were published through both national and international collaborations. Furthermore, 47 articles received support or sponsorship from external parties. In our discussion, we explore the various techniques, instruments, and data analyses employed in these studies. Overall, this SLR serves as a comprehensive reference for researchers investigating forest bioindicators. Its findings contribute to the diversification of subjects and the enrichment of alternative bioindicators for forest ecosystems.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the trend and scope of strengthening literacy in biology learning over four decades that will make a valuable contribution to the biology learning in all educational levels. This study employed a systematic literature review (SLR) method adapted from the PRISMA model. This SLR obtained several interesting findings. It was found that the theme of biology and literacy reached its peak in 2023. We found two main countries to focus on, namely the United States and Indonesia. Biology and its learning are synonymous with scientific/science literacy. Other types of literacy that are widely promoted by researchers are information literacy, quantitative literacy, health literacy, visual literacy, computer literacy, three-dimensional literacy, reading literacy, media literacy, assessment literacy, epigenetic literacy, digital literacy, and environmental literacy. In the Indonesian context, we suggest that biology learning needs to be oriented towards strengthening the literacy aspects-science literacy, information literacy, quantitative literacy, health literacy, visual literacy, computer literacy, three-dimensional literacy, reading literacy, media literacy, assessment literacy, epigenetic literacy, digital literacy, and environmental literacy-found in SLR because each of them has an urgency.
