Abstract

Adolescence is a phase marked by stress, emotional instability, and low self-esteem, often leading to self-criticism and social withdrawal. To cope with these challenges, adolescents need self-compassion to maintain self-kindness and achieve better psychological well-being. This study aims to measure adolescent self-compassion using the Self-Compassion Scale for Youth (SCSY), a 17-item scale developed to suit the competencies of adolescents, as the original Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) is less applicable for this age group. A quantitative survey design was employed, with data from 105 high school students (aged 16-17, predominantly Sundanese, residing in rural areas) analyzed using JASP and Winstep for Rasch Model measurement. Results indicated that the SCSY demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability, confirming its suitability for adolescent self-compassion measurement. Findings underscore the importance of self-compassion in fostering emotional stability and resilience, suggesting that school-based guidance and counseling could benefit from incorporating self-compassion training to enhance mental health support for adolescents. The SCSY’s tailored approach facilitates early detection of self-compassion levels, enabling counselors to provide targeted interventions that align with adolescents’ developmental needs.

Abstract

Abstract

Adolescent mental health literacy (MHL) plays a critical role in equipping young individuals to make informed health decisions and seek appropriate care. This study aimed to explore the level of adolescent MHL worldwide, its influencing factors, and effective strategies to improve it through a systematic review of 10 selected studies published between 2000 and 2024. Using PRISMA guidelines, relevant articles were identified from databases including Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Key findings indicated significant variability in MHL among adolescents globally, influenced by factors such as education, culture, and access to information. While adolescents were generally better at recognizing common conditions like depression, less than 50% could identify it accurately. Gender disparities were observed, with females more likely to recommend professional help. Effective interventions, such as school-based programs, showed promise in enhancing MHL, particularly in improving knowledge and reducing stigma. Instruments such as the Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire and The Friend in Need Questionnaire were commonly used for assessment, although reliance on self-reported data highlights the need for more objective tools. The findings underscored the importance of comprehensive health education programs in schools, covering topics such as mental health, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles, to bridge knowledge gaps and foster help-seeking behaviors. This study concluded that addressing disparities in adolescent MHL through tailored, multi-sectoral approaches, including education, community engagement, and policy reforms, was essential to empower adolescents globally and improve public mental health outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the self-strength counseling model in developing student academic expectations. The study was conducted using a single-subject experimental design to measure the relationship between 2 variables, namely self-strength counseling and academic expectations. The type of design used is the A-B-A design, where there are three experimental phases, namely phase A is the baseline phase and phase B is the intervention phase. The data analysis used in this research is descriptive statistical techniques because the study has a single case (single subject). The number of subjects in this study was limited, namely only five students. The results showed that self-strength counseling was effective in increasing student academic expectations after the intervention process. The study results can be used to reference counselors in higher education to improve student academic expectations through the self-strength counseling model.

Abstract

Reverence, also known as ta’dzim in Pondok Pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), is a moral aspect which is taught to santri (students in Islamic boarding schools) as the most important value. Ta’dzim is delivered as an ethic, develops as a value, and grows to be part of a santri’s personality and standard behavior. This study aims to develop a valid and reliable Santri Reverence Morals Scale (SRMS) through the Rasch Model analysis. The scale was supervised under an expert judgement evaluation which was involved 7 experts and distributed to 95 participants (male santri aged between 13-23 years) who were selected through stratified random sampling. The Rasch Model analyzed output and the interpretation included data about instrument, items, and person. This study indicated that the Santri Reverence Morals Scale is very reliable, predominantly fits items, and is unidimensionally proven. In this paper, such shortcomings as hard items, misfit items, and bias items are also discussed and evaluated. The composite analysis of instrument, items, and abilities concluded that the SRMS is a questionnaire with high reliability and validity (the item separation value is 3.40 and Cronbach alpha score is 0.82). This initial instrument testing stage requires further development so that a high-quality questionnaire can be produced to measure and study the ta’dzim of santri.

Abstract

Correlation is one of the statistical methods used to measure the relationship between two variables. Two commonly used types of correlation are Spearman Correlation and Pearson Correlation. Spearman Correlation is used for ordinal data or data that do not meet the assumption of normality, while Pearson Correlation is applied to interval or ratio data that follow a normal distribution. This study aims to compare the results of analyses using these two correlation methods through the SPSS software. By analyzing both simulated and real-world data, tests were conducted on various data scenarios, including variations in data types, distribution patterns, and levels of variable relationships. The results indicate that Pearson Correlation is more sensitive to normally distributed data, whereas Spearman Correlation provides more stable results for non-normally distributed data or data containing outliers. This article also presents a step-by-step guide for using SPSS to perform analyses with both correlation methods, making it easier for readers, especially students and researchers, to apply the appropriate method based on their data characteristics. By understanding the differences and advantages of each method, users are expected to choose the right approach for correlation analysis.

Abstract

The transformation of ordinal data into interval data is a crucial step in statistical analysis, particularly for achieving more accurate measurements and making data-driven decisions. The Method of Successive Interval (MSI) has been identified as an effective approach to accomplish this transformation. This literature review aims to explore recent studies on MSI, assess its effectiveness in converting ordinal data, and identify research gaps and future research opportunities. Using a literature review method, 15 peer-reviewed articles from 2020 to 2024 were analyzed. The findings indicate that MSI not only enhances measurement accuracy but also broadens the application of statistical analysis across various fields, including guidance and counseling. This contributes to improving the validity and reliability of the instruments used, thereby enabling the formulation of interventions tailored to students' needs.
