Abstract

Consultation (shura) is a fundamental principle in Islamic teachings that functions not only as political ethics, but also as a collective method for social and family decision-making. Although many studies highlight consultation in the context of state affairs, studies on its implementation in household dynamics are still limited. This study aims to analyze the concept and meaning of musyawarah in Surah Ali Imran (3): 159, Surah al-Syura (42): 38, and Surah al-Baqarah (2): 233 based on the interpretations of classical and contemporary exegetes, as well as analyzing the relevance and implementation of these principles in building harmony in household life. This study uses a thematic interpretation (maudhu'i) method. Data collection was conducted through library research by referring to classical and contemporary interpretation literature. The results of the study show that deliberation in the Qur'an includes the principles of gentleness, equality, mutual agreement, collective participation, and moral responsibility. Surah Ali Imran (3): 159 emphasizes the importance of gentle and communicative leadership; Surah al-Syura (42): 38 places deliberation as a key characteristic of a community of believers, including within the family environment; while Surah al-Baqarah (2):233 emphasizes deliberation as a fundamental principle in family relationships, especially between husband and wife. These principles have proven relevant in building a harmonious, dialogical, and just household life Keywords: Shura, Thematic Tafsir, Family Life, Surah Ali Imran, al-Shura and al-Baqarah

Abstract

Allah reveals the Quran as a guidance to those who are pious and those who are not. In Quran, there are some verses that can be easily comprehended, also known as muhkam verses. There are also quite cryptic verses known as mutasyabih. The interpretation of the Quran often be divise, and divided into two groups. The first group derives and uses the mutasyabih verses of the Quran as a reason to spread deception and finding its takwil (original meaning) due to their heart prefers to the misguidance. The second group is them, whom they are the experts and is known as al-Rasikhuna fi al-‘ilm. They interpret the verses of the Quran, bith muhkam and mutasyabih, based on the opinion that all is coming from Allah. Understanding of the Quran making them more faithful, and therefore called as ulul albab. The term al-Rasikhuna fi al-‘ilm in Quran and hadith does not refer to a certain group or person. Hence, the interpretation of al-Rasikhuna fi al-‘ilm by the ulama depends on their mahzab.

Abstract

The phenomena of social fragmentation, religious polarization, and the decline of humanitarian solidarity highlight the importance of reviving the value of ukhuwah (brotherhood) in Islam. This study aims to examine the concept of ukhuwah in the Qur’an, particularly in Surah Al-Ḥujurāt verse 10, and its relevance to modern social life. The research employs a library research method with a thematic interpretation approach (tafsir mawḍū‘ī). Primary data sources include the Qur’an and both classical and contemporary exegeses such as Tafsir Al-Marāghī, Tafsir Al-Mishbah, and Tafsir Al-Azhar. The data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively by interpreting the verse in its social and humanitarian context. The results indicate that ukhuwah consists of four main levels: ukhuwah ‘ubūdiyyah (brotherhood among all of God’s creations), ukhuwah insāniyyah (human brotherhood), ukhuwah wathaniyyah (national brotherhood), and ukhuwah dīniyyah (religious brotherhood). Surah Al-Ḥujurāt [49]:10 emphasizes that true ukhuwah is realized through peace (iṣlāḥ) and piety. These values are relevant in strengthening unity among Muslims, promoting interreligious tolerance, and fostering social solidarity in contemporary society.

Abstract

This article presents a comprehensive socio-historical analysis of the Arabian Peninsula before the advent of Islam and the revelation of the Qur'an in the 630s CE. Based on a synthesis of archaeological evidence, ancient external records, and early Islamic historical texts, this research aims to delineate the complex and diverse social, economic, political, and religious landscape of the Arabian Peninsula. In contrast to simplified narratives that often portray this period as a monolithic "Age of Ignorance," this analysis highlights sophisticated tribal structures, dynamic economic activities including long-distance trade and established financial practices, political fragmentation marked by inter-tribal conflicts, and a broad spectrum of religious beliefs ranging from polytheism to evolving monotheism. By shedding light on regional variations in key centers such as Mecca, Medina (Yathrib), Hijaz, and Yemen, this report demonstrates how these multifaceted conditions collectively set the stage for the profound transformation brought about by Islam. Abstract

Decision-making in library management tends to be oriented towards administrative and efficienct aspects, while the ethical dimension has not been formulated conceptually. This study aims to reconstruct the concept of deliberation in the Qur'an as an ethical basis for library decision-making. The study uses a qualitative approach with a library study design. Data were obtained from contemporary exegetical literature, particularly the thoughts of M. Quraish Shihab and Yusuf al-Qaradawi, as well as scientific articles searched through Google Scholar with the keyword deliberation, organizational ethics, and library management, which were limited to publications in the last five years. The analysis was conducted using thematic analysis techniques to identify normative values and their relevance in an institutional context. The results show that deliberation contains the principles of inclusive participation, deliberative justice, trustworthiness, and collective responsibility that can be operationalized in program planning, collection development, and service evaluation. This study contributes theoretically by formulating deliberation as an ethical framework for organizations based on Islamic values and practically provides a normative foundation for participatory and accountable library governance.

Abstract

Domestic violence (DV) is a social problem that continues to increase and has serious impacts on women, children, and the structure of modern families. In the context of Islamic studies, several Qur’anic verses such as Q.S. An-Nisā’ 34, Q.S. Al-Baqarah 231–232, Q.S. An-Nisā’ 19, and Q.S. At-Taḥrīm 6 are often misunderstood as justifications for acts of domestic violence. This study examines these verses using the thematic exegesis method through the stages of verse arrangement, contextual analysis (asbāb al-nuzūl and munāsabah), concept integration, and a comprehensive study that combines all relevant scriptural texts. The results of the analysis show that these verses do not legitimize violence, but rather function as corrective and preventive instruments to protect families from Jahiliyyah practices characterized by gender inequality. The principle of tadarruj in Islamic law plays a role in gradually restructuring social order from a culture of violence toward more just and civilized family relations. Supporting evidence from the Prophet’s hadiths and the narrations of the Companions further emphasizes that Islam rejects harmful physical abuse and prioritizes conflict resolution based on dialogue, moral education, and protection. Therefore, a thematic understanding of these verses produces a relevant and contextual perspective for preventing domestic violence in contemporary society.

Abstract

This article examines the meaning of qiwāmah in QS An-Nisā’ [4]:34 through linguistic, Qur’anic semantic and socio-historical approaches. The study employs a qualitative library research method by integrating Fazlur Rahman’s double movement theory, Abdullah Saeed’s contextualist approach and Toshihiko Izutsu’s Qur’anic semantics. The analysis focuses on the linguistic structure of the verse, the semantic field of qiwāmah and the socio-historical context of early Arab society that shaped gender relations in classical tafsir. The findings indicate that qiwāmah does not represent the ontological superiority of men over women, but rather a functional and contextual social responsibility. The phrases bimā faḍḍala and bimā anfaqū demonstrate that qiwāmah is closely related to economic responsibility and family management rather than permanent domination. This study proposes an integrative interpretive model that combines linguistic analysis, Qur’anic semantics and socio-historical approaches in understanding gender-related Qur’anic verses contextually while remaining grounded in the Islamic exegetical tradition.

Abstract

Contemporary Qur'anic interpretation faces a significant challenge in the form of a persistent gap between the revealed text and continuously evolving social realities. This article aims to examine in depth how M. Quraish Shihab contextualizes the tahlili approach in responding to contemporary issues through his monumental work, Tafsir Al-Misbah. The study employs a qualitative descriptive-analytic approach grounded in library research methodology. The primary data source is Tafsir Al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab, while secondary sources comprise a range of peer-reviewed journals, classical and modern works of Qur'anic exegesis, and other relevant supporting literature. Data were analyzed through content analysis and comparative-critical methods. Three principal findings emerge from this study: first, Quraish Shihab actualizes social verses by employing a contextualization mechanism that integrates linguistic, historical, and sociological approaches; second, the wasathiyah mindset serves as the epistemological framework for cultivating inclusive and humanistic human relations; and third, Quraish Shihab's exegesis functions simultaneously as social critique and as an instrument of moral reorientation for modern society. This study recommends that Quraish Shihab's contextual exegetical approach be adopted as a developmental model for Qur'anic studies in Indonesia, one that is responsive to contemporary social and cultural dynamics.

Abstract

The concept of destiny in the Qur'an is one of the most fundamental theological knowledge that continues to be reread over time. This article aims to analyze destiny through three philosophical frameworks of science: ontology, epistemology, and axiology, and to relate them to the dynamics of the contemporary era. Ontologically, this study asserts that destiny in the Qur'an is rooted in the belief in the omnipotence and omniscience of God, which encompasses the creation, arrangement, and determination of all phenomena, without negating the role of human will and effort. Epistemologically, this study describes the sources of knowledge about destiny through the texts of the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the rational reasoning of classical and modern scholars, thus demonstrating that the understanding of destiny develops through a dialectic between text and context. From an axiological perspective, this article emphasizes the ethical and practical implications of the concept of destiny in addressing contemporary problems such as technological determinism, existential anxiety, and moral crisis. Using a literature review method and a thematic analysis approach to Quranic verses and modern theological works, this study finds that the concept of destiny is not fatalistic, but rather directs humans toward an ethos of effort, moral responsibility, and cosmic order that aligns with the principles of the sunnatullah (God's will). This study contributes to strengthening a moderate, rational, and applicable theological understanding, making it relevant to the development of Islamic knowledge in the contemporary era.
