Abstract

Nasopharyngeal dysplasia is a condition of abnormal cellular growth that occurs due to the failure of nasopharyngeal epithelial cells in carrying out cellular adaptation. This condition can occur due to the continuous inhalation of toxic compounds, such as formaldehyde, which has genotoxic and cytotoxic effects that can induce cellular damage. One of the compound activity associated with reducing risk of dysplasia is antioxidant activity. Therefore, it is important to know whether the presence of antioxidant activity affects the occurrence of dysplasia. This study is an experimental study with a post-test only control group design which aims to determine the effect of Non-Antioxidant Feed on the occurrence of nasopharyngeal dysplasia. Testing of the antioxidant activity in feed was carried out using the DPPH assay. There were two groups of experimental animals including the treatment group (fed with Non-Antioxidant Feed) and the control group (fed with SB 11). All animals in each group were induced with 40 ppm formaldehyde by inhalation for 8 weeks and then euthanized using chloroform inhalation for nasopharyngeal tissue extraction. The results of the histopathological examination of the two groups were then statistically tested using the Mann-Whitney U test and obtained a value of P<0.05 (P=0.006), which means that there are effect of feeding Non-Antioxidants Feed on the degree of dysplasia in formaldehyde-induced wistar rats. The results can be associated with the ingredients contained in the feed given, differences in genetic polymorphisms of each subjects, and effect of body weight variations of the rats caused by randomization.

Abstract

Benzophenone was synthesized through a condensation reaction of benzoic acid and phloroglucinol with an Eaton reagent as a catalyst. The percentage of the product was 60%, and it was characterized using FTIR and 1H-NMR. The sunscreen activity was carried out using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer to calculate the SPF value. The synthesis result was made in several concentration variations: 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 ppm to measure the SPF values. The results showed that the SPF values were 9.89, 13.39, 17.83, 23.77, and 28.26, respectively. Based on this, it can be concluded that these compounds have biological activity as sunscreen and samples of 200-300 ppm are included in the ultra-category as sunscreen.

Abstract

The methods for synthesizing hydroxyxanthone compounds are continually advancing. Among these, microwave-assisted organic synthesis (MAOS) has emerged as a particularly advantageous technique due to its reduced reaction times, improved yields, and enhanced selectivity. This study reports the efficient synthesis of 3,7 dihydroxyxanthone through the reaction of 2,5-dihydroxybenzoate and resorcinol, using Eaton’s reagent and zinc chloride (ZnCl2) as catalyst under MAOS conditions. The structures of the resulting compounds were analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR). The efficiency of the catalytic systems was evaluated based on the product yields. The Eaton reagent catalysis resulted in a 9.38% yield of a red solid, while the ZnCl2-catalyzed reaction produced a significantly higher yield of 23.07%, with the product appearing as an orange solid. These results demonstrate that Zn

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia (ADB) is a nutritional disorder that often occurs, especially in adolescent girls, due to increased nutrient requirements during growth and menstruation. Assessing ferritin levels is an important step in determining the status of iron stores in the body and identifying individuals at risk of iron deficiency anemia, especially in resource-constrained environments such as coastal areas. This study aims to determine the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency in adolescent girls in the coastal areas of Lombok, Indonesia and analyze the relationship between ferritin levels as a risk factor for the incidence of iron deficiency anemia. The design of this study was a cross-sectional study conducted on 101 young women aged 15 - 19 years in the coastal areas of West Lombok. Ferritin levels were measured to determine iron deficiency status (< 15 ng/ml) and hemoglobin levels were used to determine anemia in adolescent girls (HB < 12 g/dl). The Chi-Squre and relative risk tests were used for statistical analysis of the relationship and risk between iron deficiency and the incidence of anemia. The results of the study found that the prevalence of iron deficiency was 40 (39.6%) and anemia was 21 (20.79%). Of the respondents who experienced anemia, 13 (61.9%) were iron deficiency anemia. There was a significant association between anemia and iron deficiency (p = 0.004) and an odd ratio value of 4.154 was obtained, indicating that adolescent girls with iron deficiency (low ferritin levels) had a 4.154 times greater risk of developing anemia compared to adolescent girls with normal ferritin levels.

Abstract

Stunting is a condition where a child experiences a lack of nutritional intake which causes growth disorders such as height below the standard of children of the same age in a toddler. Stunting can be caused by multifactors, including food consumption that is less nutritious. Sekotong sub-district is one of the marine product producing areas in West Nusa Tenggara, however the prevalence of stunting among children aged 6 months to 2 years in this area is still above the stunting threshold set by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. Therefore, it is necessary to shifting knowledge and lifestyle to targeted communities to reduce the risk of stunting in Sekotong District with the aim of educating the community and creating new good habit patterns.  This activity was carried out using the FRES&P method (Family, Refreshing, Education, Sociality, and Presentation) to 42 people involved in the community including health cadres in the Sekotong Health Centre working area. The activity was carried out by providing exposure to material where an assessment of understanding was carried out before and after the exposure was carried out. In between activities, games related to the material were given to make it easier for participants to understand the material. In addition, the distribution and explanation of the material in the BESTI PADU booklet was carried out by applying ‘Matur Tampiasih’ to all participants present. This booklet is expected to be one of the learning tools for participants during the activity and when returning to their homes. The activity went smoothly and received good enthusiasm as evidenced by the various questions given by the participants. In addition, based on the results of the analysis of questionnaires distributed to participants, it was found that there were changes in the level of understanding resulting from the activity. The FRESH&P method can be one of the socialisation methods regarding stunting. Therefore, it can be concluded that the educational method provided can increase public understanding of stunting.

Abstract

Environmental sanitation, hygiene, and access to clean water are crucial factors in preventing infectious diseases that contribute to stunting among children under five. Adequate sanitation facilities—such as the availability of clean water and proper waste disposal systems—are fundamental human needs that support a healthy quality of life. Poor hygiene practices, particularly among young children, can increase the risk of various infectious diseases. Therefore, to sustainably reduce stunting rates, interventions should not only focus on nutritional fulfillment but also encompass improvements in environmental quality, education on clean and healthy living behaviors, and the provision of adequate sanitation facilities. This community service activity was conducted at the Sekotong Community Health Center, West Lombok Regency, targeting mothers aged ≥18 years with children aged 2–4 years. A total of 33 respondents completed questionnaires assessing their household environmental sanitation and clean and healthy living behavior (PHBS), followed by the delivery of educational materials and interactive learning sessions. The results indicated that most respondents used piped water/PDAM (36.36%) and refill water (33.30%) as their main drinking water sources, with the majority reporting good physical water quality (75.75%). Approximately 84.84% of households had latrines, while wastewater management was almost evenly split between closed drainage systems (51.51%) and open drainage (48.48%). Waste management was predominantly through burning (54.54%), though a small proportion (12.12%) still disposed of waste improperly. Handwashing practices among toddlers were relatively good, with 48.48% reported to wash hands with soap and running water at certain times

Abstract

Anemia remains a major health problem among adolescent girls in Indonesia, with significant implications for reproductive health and productivity. Since 2014, the government has implemented an iron supplementation program through schools, yet compliance remains low. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between family support, teacher support, peer support, and socioeconomic status with compliance to iron tablet consumption among adolescent girls at SMAN 1 Lembar. This was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. A total of 84 students were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through a validated and reliable online questionnaire and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed significant associations between teacher support (p<0.05) and peer support (p<0.05) with compliance to iron tablet consumption, while family support and socioeconomic status showed no significant associations (p>0.05). In conclusion, compliance with iron tablet consumption among adolescent girls is more strongly influenced by teacher and peer support than by family or socioeconomic factors. Strengthening school involvement and peer influence may serve as effective strategies to improve adherence and enhance anemia prevention programs.

Abstract

Hemoglobin levels below 12 g/dL, or anemia, continue to be a serious health issue in developing nations like Indonesia. Teenage girls in coastal areas are particularly at risk. Although research in West Lombok is still in its infancy, knowledge is thought to be the first step in prevention. The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of knowledge level on anemia among adolescent girls in coastal West Lombok. This categorical analytic observational study applied a cross-sectional design, chosen for its efficiency in assessing associations at a single point in time. Purposive sampling recruited 101 respondents who met inclusion criteria (female, aged 15–19, residing in coastal West Lombok, willing to participate). Exclusion criteria included chronic illness or refusal of blood testing. Data were obtained using a validated online questionnaire and hemoglobin measurement. Statistical analysis employed Chi-square test with SPSS version 25.0. The result indicated no significant association was found between knowledge and anemia (p=0.599). However, girls with low knowledge had 1.3 times higher risk of anemia (OR=1.295; 95% CI: 0.493–3.399), suggesting other contributing factors such as nutrition and socioeconomic conditions. In conclusion, knowledge alone does not significantly affect anemia incidence. Integrated education, nutritional interventions, and routine iron supplementation are recommended, with further studies needed.

Abstract

Formaldehyde is a hazardous chemical substance that can be found commonly in the environment which has various effects on cellular functions and could induce the cellular oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has a direct impact on the hepatic condition and could induce the activation of inflammatory mediators, lipid peroxidation, proteosomal degradation, and mitochondrial dysfunction resulting in hepatocyte injury that could be marked by hepatic enzyme elevation and hepatic weight alterations. This research was conducted using 16 Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus), divided into 4 groups each containing 4 Wistar rats. The first group was the control group, while the other groups were exposed to formaldehyde 10% by inhalation at doses of 20, 30, and 40 ppm formaldehyde persistently for 6 hours daily for about 16 weeks. The result of this study reveals that formaldehyde induction has a significant impact on hepatic weight elevations (p=0.007) and ALT enzyme elevations (p=0.000) in the treatment groups compared with the control group. Collectively, our results provide valuable information on the hazardous effects of formaldehyde inhalation, especially on the liver.
