Abstract

Aplastic anemia (AA) is a rare but serious hematologic disorder characterized by bone marrow failure, leading to pancytopenia and a reduction in all blood cell lines. This study aims to explore the definition, etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of AA. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using electronic databases such as PubMed, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, MDPI, and Google Scholar, focusing on studies and reviews related to AA. The findings indicate that the primary causes of AA include immune-mediated destruction of hematopoietic stem cells, with potential triggers such as drugs, chemicals, and autoimmune disorders. The diagnosis is confirmed through clinical evaluation, blood tests, and bone marrow biopsy. Treatment strategies consist of immunosuppressive therapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), and supportive care. In conclusion, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential for improving the prognosis of patients with AA.

Abstract

Anemia remains a chronic nutritional problem in Indonesia, with a relatively high prevalence. According to the 2013 Riskesdas survey, the prevalence of anemia among adolescents aged 15-24 years in Indonesia was 18.4%, which increased to 32% in subsequent years. This means that 3-4 out of 10 adolescents suffer from anemia. Research on the benefits of iron supplementation to reduce the incidence of anemia by increasing hemoglobin levels in adolescent girls has been conducted in several regions in Indonesia. However, similar studies are still rare in NTB, particularly in Mataram City. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of iron supplementation in increasing the hemoglobin levels of adolescent girls in Mataram City. This study is a quasi-experimental research with a one-group pretest and posttest design. The results showed that at the pretest, 58 samples (96.67%) had normal hemoglobin levels, while 2 people (3.33%) had mild anemia. At the posttest, 57 people (95%) had normal hemoglobin levels, 2 people (3.33%) had mild anemia, and 1 person (1.67%) had moderate anemia. The average hemoglobin level at the pretest was 14.47 mg/dl and increased to 14.75 mg/dl six weeks later (posttest). There was no significant difference in hemoglobin levels between the pretest and posttest, with a p-value of 0.210 (p > 0.05).

Abstract

Anemia is a serious health problem worldwide, especially in children, pregnant women, and women of reproductive age. Studies have shown that knowledge about anemia is associated with both the incidence of anemia and the compliance of adolescent girls in consuming iron tablets. This study aims to develop an educational media prototype about anemia in the form of a board game to increase the knowledge of adolescent girls about anemia. A research and development (R&D) approach was used, involving three main stages: (1) board game design, (2) prototype development, and (3) playtesting. A purposive sampling technique was used to select respondents from four categories: content experts, students, game experts, and adolescent girls. From this research, a board game prototype titled Anemopoly has been developed. In the student category, 2 respondents (15.38%) rated it as good and 11 (84.62%) as very good, achieving 94.15% of the maximum score. In the game expert category, 3 respondents (25%) gave good ratings and 9 (75%) very good, totaling 87.4%. Among adolescent girls, 3 respondents (25%) rated it good and 9 (75%) very good, totaling 90.53%. Overall, Anemopoly received very good evaluations from students, game experts, and adolescent girls.

Abstract

Coastal primary care physicians in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) serve as the frontline responders for diving injuries and marine envenomation, yet their diagnostic capacity for these cases remains limited despite the high likelihood of such incidents in coastal communities. To address this gap, this community engagement activity primarily aimed to enhance physicians’ diagnostic abilities, with the incorporation of Sasak local-language symptom descriptors used as a supporting tool to improve clinical anamnesis and patient communication. An online webinar was conducted involving 114 internship doctors, assessed through a pre-test, post-test, and a Likert-scale evaluation questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. Most participants were from Mataram City (41.23%) and graduates of NTB universities (59.6%). Participants perceived the inclusion of Sasak language terms as highly relevant for improving clinical interactions (mode = 5). The mean test score increased from 133.9 (pre-test) to 165.4 (post-test), with a significant improvement demonstrated by the Wilcoxon test (Z = –4.944; p < 0.001). These findings indicate that the webinar effectively strengthened physicians’ diagnostic capacity for diving injuries and marine envenomation, with local-language familiarity functioning as an additional supportive competency. Further development into a structured anamnesis module incorporating these elements is recommended.

Abstract

Adherence to Iron-Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation is a critical strategy in preventing and overcoming anemia among adolescent girls. However, compliance rates remain inconsistent across various regions. This integrative review aims to identify and synthesize the multi-dimensional factors influencing adherence to IFA supplementation among adolescent girls. A total of 28 relevant studies, including quantitative, qualitative, and systematic reviews, were analyzed. The findings indicate that adherence is determined by several key factors: (1) Individual factors, including knowledge of anemia, attitudes towards supplements, and personal motivation; (2) Social and environmental support, particularly the crucial roles of family (parents) and school environments (teacher supervision); and (3) Programmatic interventions, such as culture-based nutrition education and the use of digital health applications. Barriers such as fear of side effects and lack of consistent information were also identified. This review concludes that a multi-sectoral approach involving schools and families, supported by innovative educational media, is essential to improve compliance and ensure the success of anemia prevention programs.

Abstract

Salmonella is a type of gram-negative bacteria that belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family and is a major health issue worldwide because it can lead to different illnesses in both humans and animals. This comprehensive study explores the pathogenicity of Salmonella, focusing on its general characteristics, mechanisms of pathogenesis, and host-pathogen interactions. The research examines the taxonomy, morphology, and biochemical properties of Salmonella, highlighting the diversity within the genus and its adaptability to various environments. The study then delves into the complex mechanisms of pathogenicity, including adhesion to host cells, tissue invasion, intracellular survival, and modulation of host immune responses. Particular focus is placed on the significance of Salmonella Pathogenicity Islands (SPIs) and the Type III Secretion Systems (T3SS) they code for in relation to virulence. In addition, the research examines how the host's immune system reacts to a Salmonella infection, covering both innate and adaptive immune responses. This study also looks into the clinical symptoms associated with Salmonella infections, which can vary from mild gastroenteritis that resolves on its own to serious systemic illnesses such as typhoid fever. Diagnostic methods, including traditional culture techniques and modern molecular approaches, are evaluated for their efficacy in detecting and characterizing Salmonella infections. Finally, the study examines current prevention and treatment strategies, including vaccination and antibiotic therapy, while addressing the growing concern of antimicrobial resistance. This comprehensive analysis of Salmonella pathogenicity provides valuable insights into the intricate host-pathogen relationship and highlights potential avenues for developing novel therapeutic and preventive strategies against Salmonella infections.
