Abstract

This article explores the epistemological significance of asbab al-nuzul (occasions of revelation) as a hermeneutical tool for contextualizing Quranic teachings in the face of contemporary interpretive challenges. While traditionally regarded as historical annotations, asbab al-nuzul provide more than background context—they serve as critical frameworks that anchor the meaning of verses to their original socio-historical settings, thus preventing misreadings in modern applications. Employing a qualitative-descriptive method within a library research framework, this study critically engages with both classical and contemporary exegetical works. The findings reveal that integrating asbab al-nuzul into modern Quranic interpretation enhances both textual fidelity and contextual relevance, especially in navigating legal, ethical, and socio-political verses. In an era marked by pluralism, shifting norms, and the reconfiguration of Islamic thought, reaffirming the role of asbab al-nuzul becomes essential for maintaining the coherence, depth, and transformative potential of the Quranic message. This study advocates for a renewed hermeneutical approach that positions asbab al-nuzul not merely as ancillary data, but as a core interpretive mechanism in contemporary Quranic studies.

Abstract

The Qur'an, as the holy scripture, contains teachings for practicing Islam as a religion of rahmatan lil 'alamin (mercy for all worlds). One of these teachings is the prohibition of riba (usury), with the verses concerning riba being among the last legal verses revealed before the passing of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). These verses are often accompanied by Allah’s warnings. According to the asbab al-nuzul (circumstances of revelation) of Surah Al-Baqarah verses 278 and 279, it is narrated that the Bani Mughirah were significantly affected by riba, leading them to lament, "We are the most miserable people because of riba." On the other hand, Bani Amr felt they could live comfortably by exploiting riba. In Surah Al-Baqarah verse 275, the Qur'an describes those who engage in riba transactions as being akin to a staggering individual. The term "staggering" refers to the condition of those who engage in riba transactions pretending to stand firm when, in reality, they are unstable. The purpose of this study is to explore the concept of riba in the Qur'an and its impact on life by analyzing the asbab al-nuzul of the verses concerning riba. This research employs a descriptive-qualitative method aimed at understanding the concept of riba in the Qur'an and its implications for life. The findings of this study reveal that riba is one of the practices strongly condemned in the Qur'an. This is evident from the frequent association of riba with Allah’s warnings. These warnings are not without reason, as the practice of riba has significant detrimental effects, including moral, psychological, social, and economic harm, as highlighted in one of the narratives related to the asbab al-nuzul of the verses on riba.

Abstract

This article discusses various important aspects of applying Qur'anic values in modern life. This article aims to see the relevance of Islamic teachings in dealing with social issues such as justice in QS. Al-Hujurat verse 9 by using Fazlur Rahman's dynamic approach in an effort to explore the understanding of the verse with precision. This literature research uses descriptive-qualitative method. The data is obtained from representative literature sources and then content analysis is carried out and then concluded. The results showed that Fazlur Rahman's dynamic approach seeks to combine religious texts with the context of human history in maintaining the relevance of Islam as a religion that can adapt to the dynamics of time and place (double movement). This shows that Islam with its universal values can offer solutions to the various challenges of modern life through a flexible, just and principled understanding. The moral idea obtained from understanding QS. Al Hujurat verse 9 is that reconciliation between two conflicting groups should be done fairly.

Abstract

The phenomenon of unrestricted dating after engagement has sparked a critical debate within Islamic thought concerning the enforcement of Sharia law. Society perceives dating after engagement as a means to better understand each other to prevent divorce, alongside the assumption that khitbah is considered a permissible form of dating. Based on this issue, the researcher aims to re-examine the interpretation of khitbah in the Qur'an. The method employed is qualitative, categorized under library research, utilizing documentation techniques with historical analysis. The findings of this study indicate that Islam encourages its followers to marry as a means of safeguarding themselves from sinful acts and fulfilling the principles of sunnatullah. Marriage in Islam is regarded as a form of worship aimed at creating a harmonious, loving, and respectful family. The practice of unrestricted dating after khitbah or engagement is seen as deviating from the Islamic purpose of marriage. Commitment to Sharia and adherence to religious boundaries are key in the process of establishing a legitimate relationship. Therefore, preserving honor and following religious guidance in premarital relationships represent a Muslim's responsibility in upholding Islamic values and Sharia law.

The results of the research show that: The primary source of prejudice is the Qur'anic verse. The results of the research show that: 1). Quraish Shihab's interpretation leads that prejudice is not recommended and must be avoided in any form. 2). While al-Thabathaba'i states that prejudice is still allowed as long as it is still in the realm of ideas, because there is no bad impact on others. Abstract

Interfaith marriage in Indonesia entered a new phase with the implementation of Supreme Court Circular No. 2 of 2023, which prohibits courts from granting petitions for the registration of interfaith marriages. This study examines the challenges of legal protection for interfaith families in North Sulawesi amid the contestation among sharia norms, national policy, and human rights. Using a socio legal approach, the research finds that the new policy reinforces the exclusivist character of sharia norms in family law practice while widening the gap of legal uncertainty for interfaith couples. Families in North Sulawesi face a dilemma between the formal demands of religious and state law and their need to live together and secure their basic rights. Many couples resort to informal or semi formal solutions, such as formal conversion, dual registration, or marrying abroad, which generate new legal risks particularly regarding the status of children and inheritance rights. Local wisdom in North Sulawesi, including tolerance, interfaith dialogue, and inclusive social practices, has proven to be an important asset for dampening potential conflict, but it is not strong enough to ensure long term legal certainty and protection. These findings underscore an urgent need for regulatory reform and harmonization between sharia, legal pluralism, and human rights principles so that the protection of interfaith families can be realized fairly and equally in Indonesia. .
