Abstract

Background: HIV/AIDS remains a major public health challenge worldwide, and treatment adherence continues to be a critical factor in achieving effective viral suppression. Knowledge about HIV prevention plays a vital role in shaping health behaviors and promoting adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). This study aimed to analyze the association between knowledge of HIV prevention and treatment adherence among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) using a social epidemiology framework. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted among 101 PLWHA receiving ART in public health centers and clinics. Data were collected through structured questionnaires covering demographic characteristics, knowledge of HIV prevention, and treatment adherence, verified with medical records. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-square test (α = .05) to assess the relationship between knowledge and adherence levels. Results: The majority of respondents were male (82.2%) and had completed secondary education (66.3%). Most participants demonstrated fair to good levels of HIV prevention knowledge; however, adherence levels varied. The Chi-square test revealed a highly significant association between knowledge and treatment adherence, χ²(4) = 202, p < .001, indicating that higher knowledge was strongly correlated with improved adherence. Conclusion: The findings emphasize that knowledge enhancement significantly improves ART adherence and contributes to the control of HIV/AIDS. Strengthening education programs, peer support, and community engagement are essential strategies to foster sustainable adherence and align national efforts with global HIV prevention targets.

Abstract

Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic heavy metal with no biological benefits, posing significant environmental and health risks upon exposure. This study investigates the adsorption characteristics of chicken eggshell-derived adsorbents for the removal of Hg from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent preparation involved washing, drying, calcination, and KOH activation. Results indicated that the 170-mesh size adsorbent exhibited the highest adsorption efficiency, achieving a 99.70% removal rate of Hg. adsorption capacity tests revealed values ranging from 79,90 to 88,90 mg/g, conforming to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for activated carbon. Functional group analysis using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) identified a significant increase in aldehyde and ketone groups post-activation. The adsorption process reached equilibrium within 90 minutes, with optimal removal efficiency observed at an initial Hg concentration of 3,0 mg/L. These findings suggest that chicken eggshell-based adsorbents are a cost-effective and efficient solution for mitigating Hg contamination in wastewater, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional methods.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of temperature on the Kernel Silo Dryer toward the moisture content of palm kernels at PT XYZ. Moisture control in palm kernels is crucial to ensuring optimal crude palm kernel oil (CPKO) quality. The drying process using a Kernel Silo Dryer was conducted at varying temperatures of 40°C, 50°C, and 60°C for three hours. Results indicated that higher drying temperatures resulted in lower kernel moisture content. At 60°C, the kernel moisture content reached the desired standard below 7%. However, at 40°C and 50°C, the moisture content exceeded the specified limit, increasing the risk of mould growth and reducing kernel quality. Key factors influencing drying efficiency include heater condition, steam pressure from the Back Pressure Vessel (BPV), and equipment cleanliness. Therefore, temperature optimisation and proper maintenance are essential to improve drying efficiency and maintain kernel quality.

Abstract

Abstract: Understanding human anatomy, including the digestive system, is fundamental for medical students. Educational videos are increasingly recognized as an effective teaching tool to enhance student comprehension and improve their performance in practical examinations. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using educational videos on the knowledge and performance of medical students at Universitas Jambi through the practical exam scores. This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design. There were 123 medical students from the 2024 cohort chosen through purposive sampling. The students were divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The experimental group was given a video on the anatomy of the digestive system as an instructional tool, while the control group received standard teaching. Data were collected from both groups' pre-test and post-test scores. Data were analyzed using the paired and independent t-tests, which compared the scores within and between the groups to identify any significant differences. The average pre-test and post-test scores were 28.85 and 54.75 for the control group, while of the experimental group were 29.91 and 62.74, respectively. The pre-test scores showed no significant difference (p=0.071), but the post-test scores demonstrated a significant improvement in the experimental group (p=0.032). In conclusion, the educational video of anatomy of the digestive system significantly improved student knowledge and performance at Universitas Jambi. Abstract

Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is a high-strength agro-industrial wastewater whose management governs both environmental performance and operational resilience of palm oil mills. Treatment trains optimized solely for COD/BOD reduction often accumulate operational penalties under feed variability, including scaling, sludge burden, and persistent polishing demands, rather than forming a controllable value-generating platform. This review reframes nutrient recovery from POME as a fertilizer manufacturing problem embedded in a wastewater system, where removal does not equal recovery unless nutrients are transferred into a defined product phase with mass-balanced yield, controlled composition, impurity management, and agronomic function. Anaerobic digestion is positioned as a pivotal pivot point because it converts organic load to methane while producing an anaerobically digested liquor that is operationally more suitable for targeted nutrient recovery than raw POME. Using a PRISMA-ScR scoping review with a systematic search, evidence was mapped across three coupled outcome domains: water reuse/reclamation, energy recovery (biogas/CH₄), and nutrient circularity (N–P recovery and derived products). The synthesis compares unit operations by function and operability constraints, then assembles feasible combinations into a process superstructure and a decision roadmap for pathway selection under mill constraints. Findings emphasize that raw POME and anaerobically digested POME are not interchangeable feedstocks: raw POME is dominated by solids/colloids that hinder selective recovery and contaminate products, while post-digestion variability is more chemistry-driven and governs precipitation windows and membrane stability. Recovery options converge toward hybrid systems integrating crystallization (struvite/phosphate minerals), adsorption/ion exchange with regenerability, membrane concentration including fertilizer-drawn forward osmosis, and biological assimilation (microalgae), with fouling, scaling, and crystallization inhibition as decisive design variables. Overall, meaningful nutrient recovery from POME is achieved only when fertilizer grade products are produced while simultaneously reducing compliance risk and operational burden.

Abstract

The palm oil industry plays a crucial role in the global economy, particularly in Indonesia as one of the leading producers of palm oil. However, its production process generates a substantial amount of liquid waste known as Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), which is rich in organic pollutants, including Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), as well as residual oil and grease. If not properly managed, POME can lead to environmental pollution and disrupt surrounding ecosystems. Conventional treatment methods, such as anaerobic ponds, induced air flotation, and coagulation–flocculation, present several limitations, including prolonged processing time and high operational costs. As an alternative, the use of eco-enzyme derived from the fermentation of organic waste, such as fruit peels, offers a more efficient and environmentally friendly solution. Eco-enzyme contains active enzymes, including lipase, protease, and amylase, which are effective in degrading complex organic compounds in POME, thereby naturally reducing BOD, COD, and TSS levels. Furthermore, the presence of organic acids and phenolic compounds in eco-enzyme contributes to pH neutralization and facilitates the adsorption of heavy metals in POME. This study aims to explore the potential of eco-enzyme as a sustainable technology for POME treatment, while also supporting the principles of zero waste and circular economy within the palm oil industry.
