Abstract

The ability of orientation and mobility (O&M) in children with visual impairment was still very low, so the dependence on sighted people was very high and this limited the activities of children with visual impairment themselves. On the other hand, the parents of these children did not have the ability on O&M and thus face difficulties in teaching their children to develop their O&M at home. Therefore, it was important to have an operational guideline to provide help for parents in teaching their children to be independent. The purpose of this study is to formulate a program for parents on how to teach O&M to their children. The study was carried out using the qualitative approach with the case study strategy; the in-depth interview, direct observation, participant observation, and documentation, were used to collect the data, and the O&M Attribute Checklist was adapted from Perkins Freedom Mobility LLC (2014) was used to portray the O&M competence profile of the parents. The subjects of this study were parents of children with visual impairment. The result of this study is in the form of a program formulation that was developed based on the analysis of assessment and field needs, including objectives, materials, methods, implementation procedures, and evaluations. The conclusion is that through the program guidelines that have been formulated, it is hoped that parents have the competence and will be easier to teach their children’s O&M skills so that children develop optimally. The implication is that families must be consistent in following the designed program guidelines.

Abstract

The ability to pronounce vowels in deaf students is still low, the indications are the occurrence of replacement, addition, and even the omission of phonemes. On the other hand, there is the unpreparedness of the teacher in setting the right model and method during articulation exercises, ignoring the basic receptive and expressive language skills of deaf students, allegedly as a form of teacher failure in practicing articulation both during individual and classical learning. For this reason, it is necessary to have a learning model that can accommodate the needs of deaf students to articulate correctly. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the SAVI (Somatic Auditory Visual Intellectual) learning model in improving the pronunciation of vowels in class III deaf students. The approach used in this research is quantitative with the type of experimental research in the form of SSR (Single Subject Research) with ABA design. Data was collected using Observation and Treatment Tests carried out on one deaf child. The results of the study were that in the baseline-1 condition, the intervention increased by a value of 73.33, the intervention in Baseline-2 decreased by a value of 60.83, and although the intervention in Baseline-2 experienced a decrease, the data obtained was much better than the baseline-1, which was 26.66. In conclusion, the Somatic, Auditory, Visual, and Intellectual learning model affects improving the pronunciation of vowels in Deaf Students. For this reason, teachers must pay attention to and develop sensory modalities in deaf students in an integrated and holistic way in learning articulation.

Abstract

Reading is the basis for mastering various fields of study. Slow learners generally fail to understand basic lessons and concepts in academics, such as reading, writing, mathematics and language. This is because the above processes require a fairly complicated cognition process. So in overcoming obstacles to learning to read at the beginning of slow learners, a reading technique is needed that suits the needs of children. One of the reading techniques that can be used is the Montessori technique which is based on the Montessori method. The objectives of this study are as follows: (1) Knowing the stages of the process of developing an initial reading program for slow learners with Montessori techniques (2) Knowing the feasibility of developing an initial reading program for slow learners with Montessori techniques. The research method used in this study is a mixed research method. The final product of this study resulted in a beginning reading learning program with Montessori techniques consisting of products: (1) initial reading identification and assessment format (2) Learning program plan (3) Guidebook for teachers (4) Student worksheets (5) Module on Montessori reading techniques that have been modified for slow learner children. Based on research findings, data analysis and theoretical discussion, it can be concluded that the application of the beginning reading program in slow learners with Montessori techniques is feasible because it suits the needs of children and is able to improve initial reading skills. This program also helps teachers to know the stages of making individual learning programs for students with special needs.

Abstract

Deaf children experience speech and language difficulties due to hearing loss. Children with hearing loss experience delays and communication difficulties due to delays in speech and language development. The main problem in language acquisition for deaf children is that they have difficulty understanding the meaning of words. The problem is that children can read, but they do not understand what they read. The title of this article is ``The learning media "ARASIK" in understanding the meaning of nouns in SDLB Deaf students at SLB Negeri Bogor" The theoretical foundations used in this study are: (1) understanding the meaning of words, as stated by Nurbeiti Jamalus that the meaning of a word is the relationship between the sound (language) of the word spoken or written with the object concerned; (2) Augmented Realitiy learning media promoted by scientists, that AR can visualize abstract concepts for understanding and the structure of an object model allows AR as a more effective media in accordance with the objectives of learning media. This research uses a descriptive-qualitative approach, with data collection techniques through observation, interviews and documentation studies. The data analysis technique used refers to Miles and Huberman (1994) which includes three activities, namely: (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, and (3) conclusion drawing from the application of "ARASIK" media. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the "ARASIK" media can help facilitate SDLB Deaf students in understanding the meaning of nouns.
