Abstract

Abstract

Forests play a vital role in supporting the livelihoods of surrounding communities and have the potential to significantly boost local economies. However, this dependence can sometimes threaten the sustainability of forest ecosystems. To address this, sustainable management should be at the forefront of utilizing existing forest resources. A study focusing on community empowerment in managing forestry commodities is essential to optimize the sustainable use of natural resources in Central Sulawesi Province. This research aims to identify factors influencing community empowerment in managing and utilizing these resources, which will inform strategies to strengthen such empowerment. The S-O-A-R (Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, Results) approach has been employed to enhance qualitative analysis across three operational areas of KPH Kulawi. Findings indicate that community capacity to manage forest areas is bolstered by elements of local wisdom. This approach is recognized as an effective strategy for safeguarding forest areas while simultaneously improving the community's economic well-being.

Abstract

Sponge is one group of marine organisms that potentially contain bioactive compounds. Bioactivities of compound extracted from sponge are influenced by the habitat where they live. To proof the effects of different habitat type on the sponge bioactivities,a study was conducted by examining sponge samples collected from Barrang Lompo and Lae-Lae Islands. Extraction was done using maseration method, while bioactivity was tested using agar diffusion method. Sponge species that collected from Barrang Lompo and Lae-lae islands were 40 and 23 species, respectively. In Barrang Lompo island, all extracts were active on Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio cholerae, while in Lae-Lae Island, all extracts of sponge were active on Staphylococcus aureus but only 13 extracts were active on Vibrio cholerae. In term of fractional bioactivities, in Barrang Lompo Island, of 40 sponge species found, 26 fractions were active on Staphylococcus aureus and only 16 fractions that active on Vibrio cholerae. Bioactivities of extracts from Barrang Lompo Island were higher than those from Lae-Lae Island. Statistical analysis showedthat bioactivities of extracts taken from Barrang Lompo and Lae-Lae Island on Staphylococus aureus and Vibrio cholerae were significantly different. However, none differences detected on bioactivities among habitats.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) integrated with meaningful learning and ethnoscience in enhancing analytical thinking and curiosity among junior high school students. The study was motivated by low student engagement and the dominance of conventional teacher-centered instruction that lacks contextualization and incorporation of local knowledge. A quantitative quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was employed, involving 60 eight-grade students divided into experimental and control classes. Analytical thinking was assessed through a validated essay test, while curiosity was measured using an observation checklist, both demonstrating adequate validity and reliability. Data analysis included normality and homogeneity tests, independent samples t-tests, and Pearson correlation. Results indicated a significant improvement in analytical thinking in the experimental class compared to the control (t = –33.289, p < .001), and curiosity was also significantly higher (t = –20.079, p < .001). Furthermore, a strong positive correlation was found between analytical thinking and curiosity (r = 0.801, p < .001), indicating that curiosity accounts for approximately 64.16% of the variance in analytical thinking. These findings confirm that integrating PBL, meaningful learning, and ethnoscience effectively improves students’ analytical thinking, as indicated by a high N-Gain in the experimental class (0.703) compared to a low N-Gain in the control class (0.206), and increases students’ curiosity, as shown by higher posttest mean scores in the experimental group than in the control group. The study implies that educators should adopt problem-based learning contextualized with local knowledge to improve science learning quality and 21st-century competencies.
