Abstract

This study aims to explore the educational values exemplified by Maryam binti Imran and to analyze how these values can be internalized through the framework of Islamic Information Literacy. Grounded in a qualitative approach using literature review methodology, the research draws upon classical tafsir works, contemporary Islamic educational texts, and thematic Qur'anic exegesis. The primary data include authoritative Islamic texts such as Tafsir Al-Munir, Tafsir Ibnu Katsir, and Shahih Qashashil Qur’an, complemented by scholarly discourse on religious literacy and character formation. The findings reveal that Maryam embodies core Islamic values—spirituality, chastity, fortitude, and social responsibility—through her ability to receive, understand, evaluate, and act upon divine revelation. Her life serves as a model of effective Islamic information processing: she exercises discernment in distinguishing between divine truth and social stigma, demonstrates spiritual resilience in the face of severe trials, and maintains moral integrity despite public pressure. These values are not inherited passively but are cultivated through active engagement with authentic religious sources. The study concludes that Islamic Information Literacy is not merely a technical or academic skill, but a transformative tool that shapes faith-based character and ethical awareness. Incorporating Maryam’s example into the Islamic education curriculum can enhance students’ intellectual, emotional, and spiritual competencies, positioning her as a pedagogical model for values-based education in the modern era.

Abstract

This study explores the institutional role of Madrasah Diniyah Takmiliyah Awaliyah (MDTA) Al Washliyah in promoting religious information literacy among urban Muslim youth in Medan, Indonesia. Contrary to the common perception of madrasahs as merely spaces for rote Qur'anic learning, MDTA Al Washliyah actively integrates media analysis and critical religious interpretation into its pedagogy. Using a qualitative method combining in-depth interviews and classroom observations, and employing snowball sampling to identify key informants, the research found that teachers encourage students to question, verify, and contextualize online Islamic content. These practices align with UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy (MIL) framework and reflect the Islamic tradition of tafaqquh fi al-din—a deep, contextualized understanding of religion. Despite these innovations, the study also identifies critical challenges. Teachers face limited digital training, poor infrastructure, and minimal institutional support. Moreover, a cultural and generational gap exists between digitally-native students and digitally-limited educators. Parental involvement remains low, as many guardians view MDTA narrowly as a place for Qur’anic recitation, limiting support for media literacy initiatives. Nevertheless, the findings suggest that MDTA Al Washliyah, as a community-rooted institution, holds significant potential as a literacy agent. Through its culturally embedded and dialogic pedagogy, it fosters ethical digital citizenship and resilience against misinformation. In conclusion, MDTA Al Washliyah exemplifies how grassroots religious schools can adapt to digital realities, provided they receive adequate training, technological support, and broader cultural alignment. This study contributes to the discourse on integrating media literacy within Islamic education in the context of Indonesia’s urban society.

Abstract

This study explores the internalization of moral values contained in Rasysy al-Barad, a classical commentary (syarḥ) on Al-Adab al-Mufrad by Imam al-Bukhārī, through the lens of classical text-based information literacy. The urgency of this research stems from the declining moral behavior among students in Islamic educational institutions, prompting the need to return to foundational ethical texts rooted in prophetic traditions. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with a hermeneutic method, this study analyzes the contents of Rasysy al-Barad and examines the stages of value internalization aligned with the framework of information literacy: accessing, evaluating, and integrating information. The findings reveal that the book emphasizes values such as honesty, trustworthiness, respect, patience, modesty, and compassion. These values are interpreted in relation to contemporary social contexts, reflecting not only textual fidelity but also moral relevance. The study concludes that classical Islamic texts like Rasysy al-Barad function not only as religious knowledge resources but also as character-building tools within Islamic education. It recommends incorporating such texts into values-based curricula to foster moral sensitivity and critical religious thinking (tafaqquh fī ad-dīn), ultimately producing intellectually and ethically grounded individuals.
