Abstract

Background: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease with diverse clinical manifestations depending on disease activity. Clinical manifestations, disease activity, and side effects of treatment can affect quality of life. The LupusQoL questionnaire assesses the disease's impact on eight quality of life domains. The Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) is an inflammatory biomarker that correlates with SLE disease activity. Objective: This research aims to determine the correlation between NLR and various domains of the LupusQoL questionnaire in SLE patients. Methods: This observational analytic study used purposive sampling, involving 32 SLE patients treated at Raden Mattaher Hospital, Jambi, in 2024. NLR was obtained from blood counts performed within the last 4 weeks, and HRQOL was measured using the LupusQoL questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation. Result: The mean NLR was 6.50 (1.3–29.43). LupusQoL showed the lowest score in fatigue (58.85). Pearson analysis revealed a moderate inverse correlation between NLR and the planning domain of LupusQoL (p= 0,022). NLR shows no statistically significant correlation with physical health, pain, intimacy, burden to others, emotional health, body image, or fatigue in SLE patients, as p-values >0.05. Conclusion: Higher NLR is correlated with lower planning domain HRQoL in SLE patients and vice versa.

Abstract

In addition to its widespread use as a culinary spice, white turmeric rhizome (Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe) exhibits important pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antioxidant effects. The rhizome contains secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, phenols, tannins, and terpenoids, which are believed to contribute to its potential efficacy in treating burns. This study used a fully randomized post-test-only control group design consisting of five treatment groups: P1 (5% ethanol extract of white turmeric rhizome), P2 (10%), P3 (15%), K⁺ (positive control: Bioplacenton), and K⁻ (negative control: Vaseline flavum). Parameters observed included reduction in burn wound diameter and collagen density, which were assessed through histological analysis. The results showed significant differences between treatment groups (p < 0.05). The 10% concentration showed the highest wound healing activity, reaching a healing rate of 54.72% and producing denser collagen compared to the other treatments. However, its effect did not exceed the positive control (Bioplacenton). The 5% concentration showed moderate healing activity (43.84%) with intermediate collagen density, while the 15% concentration produced the lowest effect. Overall, the findings indicate that the ethanol extract of white turmeric rhizome, particularly at a concentration of 10%, enhances burn wound healing and increases collagen formation, supporting its potential as a natural therapeutic agent for the treatment of burns.

Abstract

IL-6 has been shown to enhance collagen synthesis and prolong the fibroblast proliferative phase, potentially contributing to uncontrolled keloid growth. However, despite its frequent mention in the literature as a crucial factor in keloid formation, studies specifically exploring the molecular mechanisms of IL-6 in fibroblast regulation and its interaction with other cytokines within keloid tissue remain limited. This study aims to further investigate the role of IL-6 in keloid matrix formation. This study is an analytical study conducted cross-sectionally. The samples used were patients diagnosed with keloids histopathologically based on microscopic criteria. Clinical data were taken from medical records and microscopic and immunohistochemical assessments using paraffin blocks available in the anatomical pathology laboratory of hospitals in Jambi city. There were 36 cases of keloids, aged between 12 and 42 years, mostly in women (66.7%), occurring in the trunk area (77.8%) 30 cases of recurrence (83.3%). We found 24 cases (77.8%) with strong IL-6 immunoexpression. There were 3 cases (8.3%) with no immunoexpression. There was a strong correlation between IL-6 immunoexpression and gender (p=0.03), age(0.04) and recurrence (p=0.02). The role of fibroblast cells is very important for the process of collagen formation in wound healing. The role of fibroblast cells is very important for the process of collagen formation in wound healing, where interleukin-6 in various theories and studies supports the process of collagen formation.

Abstract

Exposure to cigarette smoke can cause lung tissue damage through mechanisms of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. Melaleuca cajuputi essential oil contains 1,8-cineole and flavonoids, which possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, thereby offering potential protective effects on lung tissue. This study aimed to analyze the effects of Melaleuca cajuputi essential oil on the histopathological features of the lungs in cigarette smoke-induced rats. This experimental study used 28 male Wistar rats divided into four groups: negative control, positive control (cigarette smoke exposure), treatment group 1 (cigarette smoke exposure + Melaleuca cajuputi aromatherapy at a dose of 0.5 mL), and treatment group 2 (cigarette smoke exposure + aromatherapy at a dose of 1 mL). The treatments were administered for 30 days, with exposure to two cigarettes per day and aromatherapy for 15 minutes daily. Histopathological parameters assessed included inflammatory cell infiltration and alveolar septal destruction. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test and Mann–Whitney test. The results showed that administration of Melaleuca cajuputi at a dose of 0.5 mL significantly reduced inflammatory cell infiltration scores and alveolar septal destruction compared to the positive control group. Administration of the 1 mL dose significantly reduced inflammatory cell infiltration; however, it did not show a significant difference in alveolar septal destruction compared to the positive control group.
