Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the strategies used by the English teacher in teaching vocabulary to eighth-grade students at SMP Dwijendra Mataram in the 2024/2025 academic year. The school was selected as the research site because the researcher had direct teaching and observational experience during a four-month Kampus Mengajar program at the school. During the program, several challenges were observed in vocabulary learning, including students' low interest in reading, difficulties in memorizing words, and diverse student backgrounds. A qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach was used. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with the English teacher. The results showed that the teacher implemented three main strategies: formal practice (structured activities such as repetition and drilling), functional practice (context-based learning related to daily life), and memorization strategies (using visual media such as videos). These strategies were proven to improve students’ vocabulary mastery while also increasing their motivation and engagement in learning English.

Abstract

This research explores the perceptions of first-year students in the English Education Program at the University of Mataram regarding the use of Free4Talk as a self-directed learning platform to improve their English-speaking skills. In response to the growing need for flexible and accessible language learning tools, Free4Talk offers a real-time communication environment that allows users to engage in spontaneous conversations with global speakers. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from student questionnaires and qualitative insights from semi-structured interviews to obtain a comprehensive understanding of student experiences and attitudes. The results reveal that most students perceive Free4Talk positively, especially in terms of enhancing their speaking fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, and confidence. The platform’s ease of access, time flexibility, and informal setting were seen as major advantages that support learner autonomy. Students reported feeling more motivated and less pressured compared to traditional classroom settings, which enabled them to experiment with language more freely. However, the platform was found to lack structured content, goal-setting features, and pedagogical support, which are crucial for sustained progress and skill development. Despite its benefits, several challenges were identified, including technical difficulties such as unstable internet connections and poor audio quality, psychological barriers like fear of making mistakes and anxiety when interacting with strangers, as well as limited availability of serious and constructive conversation partners. The absence of feedback and measurable progress tracking also hindered students’ ability to monitor improvement. These findings suggest that while Free4Talk serves as a useful supplementary tool for speaking practice, it is not sufficient as a stand-alone learning medium. Therefore, its integration into formal instruction, guided by educators, could significantly enhance its effectiveness in fostering English-speaking proficiency among EFL learners.

Abstract

This research is motivated by students' lack of focus during lessons, the limited variety of learning media, the predominance of lecture-based teaching methods, and the heavy reliance on LKS (student worksheets) with minimal use of instructional aids such as learning media. Additionally, the school had never used the spinning wheel media for teaching addition and subtraction. To address these issues, the researcher aimed to develop a spinning wheel learning medium for addition and subtraction material, enrich the available learning media at the school, and produce a learning medium that is valid, practical, and effective. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) approach, applying the ADDIE development model which consists of: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The results of this research and development process produced a teaching material in the form of a spinning wheel media for addition and subtraction, designed for Mathematics learning in Grade 1 at SDN 18 Sitiung. Validation was conducted by three validators. The teaching module validation test received a score of 80%, material validation 92%, media validation 85%, and language validation 100% all categorized as valid. In terms of practicality, the spinning wheel media received a score of 93% from teachers and 94% from students, classified as practical. The effectiveness test, conducted with 15 students using the developed spinning wheel media during learning, showed an average score of 86.66%, categorized as effective.

Abstract

The leaves of Strobilanthes phyllostachya have a long history of use as a herbal medicine, and research has demonstrated that they contain a range of metabolites with antioxidant activity. This study will employ a chemometric approach to analyze the correlation between functional groups from Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra and antioxidant activity. The leaf samples will be extracted with water and ethanol at 30%, 50%, 70%, and ethanol p.a. Moreover, the extracts will be evaluated for their antioxidant activity and analyzed using FTIR spectroscopy. The antioxidant activity measurement results indicate that the 70% ethanol extract of S. phyllostachya exhibits the highest antioxidant activity. The IR spectra of the water and ethanol extracts exhibited slight differences in their patterns. While the spectra of the various ethanol extracts exhibited similarities, their absorption values differed. A principal component analysis with absorbance from the FTIR spectra at wavenumber 3400-2800 and 1800-1000 cm-1 gave a good cluster of different solvent extractions used in this study. The total variation of principal component-1 (PC-1) and PC-2 is 90%. The partial least square regression (PLSR) analysis results were used to correlate the absorbance value of FTIR spectra of S. phyllostachya extract with antioxidant activity. From the PLS-R analysis, we identified a functional group, i.e. carbonyl and hydroxyl, which significantly contributed to the antioxidant activity of the S. phyllostachya extract. The value of the R2 parameter, which assesses the goodness of fit, was found to be 0.9630, indicating that the PLSR model is good.
