Abstract

Folklore is a cultural product owned by every society and believed by its people to be a unique cultural heritage containing meanings that reflect the culture of that society. This research aims to discover metaphors in the Sasak oral literature 'Seruntun' and to explore the cultural relationship with the meanings contained within 'Seruntun'. The data source for this research is 30 elders from the village of Mangkung, one of the villages that still adhere to customs on the island of Lombok and still use 'Seruntun' as a lullaby for their children. The method used in this research employs a cognitive ethnographic approach involving a cultural approach in the data analysis process. Thus, the research found that there are four metaphors in 'Seruntun' and the social and cultural contexts greatly influence the elements of literature, themes, narrative structure, and language style.

Abstract

Address terms and politeness strategies play a crucial role in communication, reflecting social relationships, cultural norms, and gender dynamics. This study investigates the use of address terms in Mambalan, a village in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, within the context of Sasaknese language, gender roles, and sociocultural influences. Address terms in Mambalan are shaped by age, class, and relational context, demonstrating an interplay between traditional values and modernization. The research draws on Brown and Levinson's politeness theory, focusing on strategies such as positive and negative politeness to explore how language maintains social "face" and harmony. The study reveals how gender influences conversational patterns, with men predominantly using apologies and expressions of obedience, while women frequently use questions to sustain interaction. These gendered language choices reflect societal expectations and power dynamics, underscoring the role of politeness in reinforcing social cohesion. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of language use in multilingual, stratified societies and offers insights into how address terms can illuminate gendered communication patterns, identity, and cultural change.

Abstract

This study explores the potential of community-based tourism in Bili Bante, including aspects of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and ecotourism. The observations show that around 75% of the tourist areas in Bili Bante are still preserved with minimal environmental pollution, making it a potential destination for ecotourism development. In addition, the cultural diversity of the local community, including traditional traditions, traditional music, and handicrafts, can be a strong tourist attraction. The interviews with local people revealed that 60% support the development of community-based tourism to improve the local economy, although 40% are concerned about the negative impacts on the environment if tourism management is not carried out carefully. The main obstacles identified are inadequate infrastructure and lack of destination promotion. Based on these findings, this study recommends increasing investment in infrastructure development, training for local people, and developing more effective marketing strategies. In addition, clear regulations regarding natural resource management and environmental conservation must be enforced to support the sustainability of tourism development in Bili Bante.
