Abstract

Folklore is a cultural product owned by every society and believed by its people to be a unique cultural heritage containing meanings that reflect the culture of that society. This research aims to discover metaphors in the Sasak oral literature 'Seruntun' and to explore the cultural relationship with the meanings contained within 'Seruntun'. The data source for this research is 30 elders from the village of Mangkung, one of the villages that still adhere to customs on the island of Lombok and still use 'Seruntun' as a lullaby for their children. The method used in this research employs a cognitive ethnographic approach involving a cultural approach in the data analysis process. Thus, the research found that there are four metaphors in 'Seruntun' and the social and cultural contexts greatly influence the elements of literature, themes, narrative structure, and language style.

Abstract

Song is an aesthetic expression of the soul through words. Songs can also be interpreted as literary works because of the beauty of the words used in each verse. Song has two main building structures, namely, an inner structure and a physical structure. In addition, in a song, there are several markers, both in the form of meanings that need to be translated by the readers themselves and linguistic markers that do not require reinterpretation. The field of study that studies and examines signifiers, symbols, and signs is called semiotics. Semiotics is a scientific study that studies the signs that exist in a literary work. The purpose of this research is to find out the change of meaning in Pangeran Inaq's song, to find out the hypogran or background of the creation of Pangeran Inaq's song, to find out the hermeneutic reading of Pangeran Inaq's song, and to find out the creation of meaning in song. This research method uses a qualitative Pangeran Inaq's interpretive approach. The results of this research show that the replacement of meaning occurs in the first stanza of the first line and the third and fourth stanzas. The hypogram, or background, for the creation of this song, is a child who misses his mother's presence. To release his longing, he created this song. The result of a hermeneutic reading of this song is someone who is remembering all the love and kindness of his mother, who has passed away; he has never been separated from his mother; his sorrows and joys are always with his mother. The creation of meaning occurs because there is repetition in every stanza of the last line

Language variation plays a crucial role in shaping individuals’ identities and social relationships within these communities. Based on those initial thoughts, this research is conducted with aims at examining the involvement of regional variations and digital dialects in the formation of identity within PUBG player groups. The approach used in this research is a qualitative anthropological approach. This approach was chosen because it focuses on human behavior and cultural phenomena which needs in-depth explorationof reallanguage analysis used in everyday communication in communities. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interview, and field notes and data analysis conducted using theme development, pattern recognition, and theme naming aided by Nvivo software in the coding process analysis. The finding of this research identified the formulation of digital dialects, influenced by repeated linguistic habits such as found in the way they use  and form slang lnguage and the adaptation of newcomers to community-specific language norms. Moreover, the research highlighted the role of language variation in fostering community bonding, enhancing in-group communication, and reflecting shared experiences among players. Overall, this research offers valuable understanding of the complex interplay among language, identity and community dynamic within online gaming realms which have never been explored by previous related research.

Abstract

Slang, especially among Generations Alpha and Z, functions as a dynamic tool for expressing identity, group belonging, creativity, and resistance to norms, shaped by digital platforms and used to signal cultural affiliation, shared values, and emotional stance in everyday communication. This study aims at evaluating the forms of slang language used by Generations Alpha and Z, linguistic patterns indirectly represent or construct social identity the influence of those slangs in educational context. This study followed a rigorous process to ensure data relevance, validity, and ethics by collecting publicly available Instagram texts from Generations Alpha and Z using purposive sampling. Data from public accounts were anonymized, scraped manually and automatically, then preprocessed through cleaning, tokenization, and normalization. NLP techniques and qualitative content analysis were applied to identify slang patterns and interpret their social meanings, revealing how slang reflects identity and cultural practices in digital youth communication. The analysis concludes that slang usage among Generations Alpha and Z on digital platforms like Instagram serves not merely as casual expression but as a communicative strategy that reflects social identity, group affiliation, and cultural values. Through a combination of computational and qualitative analysis, the study reveals that slang functions to assert community membership, convey emotional attitudes, and construct self-image in digital spaces. The emerging linguistic patterns highlight the significant role of informal language in digital literacy practices and educational interactions, underscoring the need for greater attention to youth language in both academic and cultural contexts. Previous studies have examined youth slang, but few have explored its role across digital platforms in shaping identity, especially using both computational and sociolinguistic approaches. The influence of slang in educational contexts also remains underexplored. This study addresses these gaps by analyzing slang's forms, functions, and meanings in digital youth communication.

Abstract

This study examines the use of implicature in an interview between Piers Morgan and Bassem Youssef discussing the Israel-Hamas conflict. It is based on the theory of implicature by H.P. Grice, which explains how speakers convey meanings beyond what is explicitly stated. The analysis focuses on conventional and non-conventional implicatures in their dialogue, demonstrating how Grice’s theory can be applied to understanding indirect communication in political discourse. By analyzing the use of irony, sarcasm, and other conversational strategies, this study offers insight into how these language techniques influence audience interpretation of sensitive issues. The method used in this research is qualitative. The data is taken from a YouTube interview titled “Israel-Hamas War: Piers Morgan vs Bassem Youssef Regarding the Treatment of Palestine.” The findings emphasize the importance of pragmatics in understanding how public figures communicate complex topics and shape public opinion.

Abstract

This study explores the use of language style in the short film The Mourning Bird by applying Martin Joos’ theory of five language registers: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the analysis focuses on identifying and classifying the types of language styles present in the film, and determining which style is most dominant. The dialogues are examined based on their level of formality and the context in which they occur, with attention to how each style contributes to character development and emotional expression. The findings reveal that casual and intimate styles are most frequently used, reflecting the film’s focus on family relationships, grief, and interpersonal tension. This study confirms that language style plays a critical role in short-form storytelling and supports the application of stylistic theory in film and media studies. The insights from this research may benefit linguists, educators, and filmmakers interested in narrative strategy and character portrayal through language..

Abstract

The phenomenon of speech act is functions as a tool for communication and a reflection of one’s thoughts, beliefs, and personality. This study aims to analyze assertive speech acts used by the main character, Moana, in the animated musical film Moana 2, and how those speech acts reveal the development of her personality. This study applied descriptive qualitative method with data collection technique through documentation and analysis of Moana’s utterances in the movie. A total of 176 utterances identified based from Moana and only 69 of them were categorized as assertive speech acts. The findings show forms of assertive utterance include stating, claiming, suggesting, reporting, boasting, admitting, and concluding. This research also contributes to the field of linguistics, especially in connecting speech act (Searle, 1969) with Big Five Personality Traits and enriching the understanding of how language reflects personality growth. These forms of speech acts reflect Moana’s change from an informative figure to an individual who is more confident, reflective, and has a great love for new things.  Thus, this study not only provides an overview of various assertive speech acts but also bridges the gap between pragmatic theory and personality.
