Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of mathematical representation ability in mixed fraction material. This study aims to describe the mathematical representation ability of fourth grade students in mixed fraction material based on gender. The research used quantitative method. The sample in this study were fourth grade students with a total of 34 students consisting of 16 male students and 18 female students. Selection of research subjects based on purposive sampling. Data were obtained through tests conducted twice, namely pretest then given treatment (treatment) and posttest with validated test instruments to see students' mathematical representation skills which were then processed and analyzed to draw conclusions and teacher questionnaires to see teacher perceptions about this research. The results showed that the average value of students' mathematical representation ability in visual representation reached 65.2%, representation of mathematical equations or expressions reached 43.5% and representation of words or written text reached 41.2%. Based on gender, male students reached an average of 0.61 and female students reached 0.44. The results of this study indicate that the mathematical representation ability of mixed fractions of male students is faster to accept the material because male students pay more attention to the material when learning so that they understand more quickly while female students play more.

Abstract

The background of this research highlights that students often struggle to understand the place value of numbers, as each digit in a number represents a value based on its position. This challenge arises because the learning process lacks the use of engaging media and relies heavily on one-way interactions. To address this issue, a teaching approach that incorporates media and promotes active student involvement is required. This research implements the STAD-type cooperative learning model assisted by a stick box to enhance students' understanding of place value concepts. The study employs a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design method, with fifth-grade students from public elementary schools in North Sumedang District as the population. The primary research instrument is an essay test designed to measure conceptual understanding, supplemented by non-test instruments such as observations and questionnaires to collect additional data. The findings indicate that the STAD-type cooperative learning model assisted by a stick box significantly improves students' understanding of the place value concept, with a gain score of 0.746 categorized as high. In contrast, the conventional learning model resulted in a gain score of 0.178, categorized as low. Thus, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in conceptual understanding of place value between students who learn using the STAD-type cooperative model with stick box assistance and those who engage in conventional learning methods.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low mathematical conceptual understanding of fifth-grade students regarding data collection and presentation. The conventional, teacher-centered learning process is considered ineffective in fostering deep understanding. This study aims to determine the difference in the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model and conventional learning on students' conceptual understanding. This study employed an experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design. The population comprised fifth-grade students in Sumedang Regency. Through purposive sampling, SDN Sindang II (n=31) was selected as the experimental class, and SDN Hariang (n=34) as the control class. The instruments used were tests and observations. Data analysis for the conceptual understanding test was conducted using inferential statistics to draw conclusions. The results showed that the experimental class's average score increased from 54 (pretest) to 67 (posttest) with an average N-Gain of 0.28. Meanwhile, the conventional learning class obtained an average pretest score of 62, increasing to 66 in the posttest, with an average N-Gain of 0.07. It is concluded that there is a significant difference in influence between the Problem-Based Learning model and conventional learning on students' conceptual understanding
