Abstract

In the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, communicative competence remains a crucial goal for higher education students. However, the roles of learning strategies—particularly metacognitive and socio-affective strategies in shaping communicative competence are still underexplored. This study aims to examine the predictive relationship between students’ use of metacognitive and socio-affective strategies and their overall communicative competence. Employing a quantitative approach with multiple regression analysis, data were collected from 120 EFL university students using standardized questionnaires. The findings revealed that socio-affective strategies significantly predicted students’ communicative competence, while metacognitive strategies did not demonstrate a significant effect. The results suggest that emotional regulation, interpersonal interaction, and social support are essential components in enhancing students’ ability to communicate effectively in English. This research contributes to applied linguistics and EFL pedagogy by emphasizing the importance of socio-affective dimensions in language learning and advocating for strategy-based instruction in classrooms. In terms of practical contribution, the study offers insights for language educators and curriculum developers to design more holistic and student-centered teaching strategies that promote not only linguistic knowledge but also emotional engagement and communicative confidence among students.

Abstract

Computational thinking is a practical approach to solving mathematical problems that encourages students to think critically, creatively, and systematically. This type of research employs a descriptive, qualitative approach that aims to describe the mathematical problem-solving abilities of grade 9 students from private junior high schools in Malang, with a focus on computational thinking. The subjects of the study consisted of 6 students representing two high categories, two medium categories, and two low categories, based on the results of the mathematics exam. Data collection techniques include documents, such as student learning scores and tests to measure students' computational thinking abilities, as well as interviews to refine the test results. The data were then analysed based on computational thinking indicators, including decomposition, pattern recognition, generalisation, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking. In the final stage, a description of computational thinking-based problem-solving abilities is presented. The results showed that students in the high category met four of the five computational thinking indicators, except for the generalisation indicator. Students in the medium category met all indicators, while students in the low category only met two indicators: pattern recognition and abstraction. This study emphasises the importance of computational thinking in mathematics education, which aims to improve students' problem-solving skills. Further research may explore appropriate instructional models for the development of computational thinking. Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the square board as a teaching tool to improve students' learning outcomes in quadratic equations. This research is motivated by persistent global challenges in mathematics education, particularly regarding students' difficulties in understanding and solving quadratic equations due to their abstract and complex nature. The square board, which provides a visual and interactive approach, is designed to help students concretely visualize completing the square and the structure of quadratic equations. Using a quasi-experimental design, this study involved high school students divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received instruction using the square board, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities. The results showed that students taught with the square board demonstrated significantly higher improvements in conceptual understanding and procedural fluency than those in the control group. These findings suggest that the square board increases engagement and motivation and addresses common misconceptions and procedural challenges associated with quadratic equations. This study contributes to the growing literature on innovative mathematics teaching methods by providing empirical evidence for using concrete manipulatives in algebra learning. This study also highlights the need for further research on integrating visual and interactive media in mathematics classrooms to support deeper learning and improve student learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and simulation-based learning in improving students’ critical thinking skills in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) instruction at MTs Qur’aniyah Narmada, West Lombok. The research used a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control groups, involving 44 seventh-grade students divided into two experimental classes. One class was taught using AI-integrated applications, while the other employed simulation-based methods. Data were collected through critical thinking tests and student response questionnaires, then analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent t-tests. The results showed that the AI class achieved a higher average score (81.14) than the simulation class (73.41), with a statistically significant difference (t = 2.267, p 0.05). These findings suggest that AI offers immediate feedback, adaptive learning, and deeper cognitive engagement, making it more effective than traditional simulation approaches in promoting critical thinking. The study concludes that integrating AI into ICT learning can significantly enhance digital literacy and higher-order thinking skills. This research contributes to the scientific discourse by offering a practical instructional model for madrasahs, especially in rural Indonesian settings. It supports the development of 21st-century competencies among students through innovative, technology-enhanced learning environments.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the application of differentiated instruction and its assessment in Vocational High Schools, focusing on teachers' understanding, challenges in implementation, the use of differentiated assessment, and its impact on student engagement and learning outcomes. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis. Findings indicate that teachers understand the fundamental principles of differentiated instruction and have attempted to apply them through various approaches, such as grouping students based on ability levels and adjusting materials. However, the main challenges faced include time constraints, limited resources, and a lack of training to effectively implement differentiation. Differentiated assessment has also been applied in the form of formative and project-based assessments, though teachers report difficulties in providing in-depth feedback within limited timeframes. Positive impacts from the application of differentiated instruction are seen in increased student interest and motivation, as well as improved learning outcomes. This study provides theoretical contributions by supporting the application of differentiated instruction principles within the vocational education context and offers suggestions to enhance teacher training and resource development for more effective differentiation. The results of this study are expected to serve as a reference for developing more inclusive and adaptive learning approaches in vocational school and other educational institutions.
