Abstract

Abstract. Kleden YL, Mukkun L, Ndapamuri MH, Pamatana F. 2023. The migratory locust (Locusta migratoria Meyen) as a potential source of protein and biopolymer compounds in the future. Biodiversitas 24: 5979-5987. The migratory locust Locusta migratoria Linnaeus 1758, is an edible insect posing significant challenges to the agricultural industry in Indonesia, particularly in East Nusa Tenggara (ENT) Province. However, apart from the status of the migratory locust as a highly destructive insect pest, it has great potential as a source of protein, amino acids, and other bioactive compounds. This study aimed to determine the nutritional and other bioactive characteristics of locusts. Proximate analysis was performed using SNI 01-2891-1992 to identify protein, fat, ash, carbohydrates, and energy. The amino acid analysis was conducted using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC). The chitin from the nymph and imago stages of the locust was obtained through a process including demineralization and deproteinization. Subsequently, the chitin was subjected to deacetylation in order to obtain chitosan. Proximate content analysis shows that locust has promising potential as a source of nutrients in order to address the nutritional problems of the population that are still a problem in Indonesia including in ENT Province. The protein content of locust ranged from 63.72 to 75.26%  dry weight. These contents are close to those of egg protein (83%), beef protein (85%), and even most plant proteins, like soybean (81%). The imago stage exhibited the highest total amino acid content, measuring 411.41 mg/100 g, with essential amino acids such as lysine, isoleucine, leucine, valine, phenylalanine, threonine, histidine, and tryptophae.  Imago contains chitin from 8.79 to 12.05% dry weight and chitosan from 59.3% to 71.26% by weight of chitin. The study suggests that locusts can be an alternative source of nutrition to dial with stunting in term of  their availability of protein and amino acid. Additionally, chitin and chitosan in migratory locusts are promising nutrient sources for agriculture and health applications.

Abstract

Abstract. Simamora AV, Hahuly MV, Nenotek PS, Kana YR, Kasim M, Pollo R, Ola AR, Pramatana F. 2024. In vitro screening of fungal endophytes from sandalwood (Santalum album) as antagonists to phytopathogens. Biodiversitas 25: 361-371. Endophytic fungi possess bioactive compounds and generate secondary metabolites like their host plants. The phytochemical compounds found in sandalwood plants (Santalum album L.) are recognized for their anti-pathogenic properties, suggesting the potential of sandalwood endophytic fungi as effective anti-phytopathogens. Alternaria solani and Fusarium oxysporum threaten tomato plants, whereas Phytophthora palmivora is particularly detrimental to cocoa plants. The aims of this study were: (i) to obtain isolates of endophytic fungi from roots, stems, and leaves of sandalwood plants and (ii) to assess the ability of endophytic fungi as anti-phytopathogens in vitro. Endophytic fungi were isolated through a direct plating method and next by purification and identification. All obtained endophytic fungi underwent testing for their antagonistic potential against A. solani, F. oxysporum, and P. palmivora in vitro through the dual culture method. The inhibition percentage was analyzed using variance analysis and further examined with the 5% HSD test. The study successfully isolated 104 endophytic fungal isolates from the sandalwood; 29 isolates were from the roots, 33 from the stems, and 42 from the leaves. All endophytic isolates demonstrated the ability to inhibit the growth of A. solani, F. oxysporum, and P. palmivora in vitro, with various inhibition percentages ranging from 26.7 to 83.3%. Further research will concentrate on secondary metabolites from selected isolates showing inhibition levels exceeding 70%.

Abstract

Abstract. Hahuly MV, Mudita IW, Simamora AV, Nenotek PS, Widinugraheni S, Jehaut V, Pramatana F. 2025. Insect vectors of banana blood disease in Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 3791-3802. Banana Blood Disease (BBD) poses a significant threat to banana cultivation in Indonesia. Following severe outbreaks on Sumba Island, the disease spread to the neighboring Flores Island in mid-2022, with a particularly pronounced impact on the predominant cultivar, Musa sp. ABB ‘Kepok plantain.’ Despite prior outbreaks, awareness and understanding of the disease and its insect vectors remain limited among agricultural officers, village leaders, and farmers on Flores Island. The pathogen, Ralstonia syzygii subsp. celebesensis (Rsc), is known to be transmitted by insect vectors; however, no prior data existed regarding vectors on Flores Island. This knowledge gap has impeded effective disease management and allowed the disease to spread unnoticed. This study aimed to assess the spread and incidence of BBD and investigate potential insect vectors involved in its transmission. A survey conducted across five districts in western Flores confirmed the presence of BBD in all surveyed areas, with varying incidence rates among banana cultivars. The highest incidence (65.88%) was recorded in Musa sp. ABB ‘Kepok plantain,’ followed by Musa sp. AAB ‘Raja Sereh banana,’ Musa sp. AAA ‘Barangan banana,’ Musa sp. AAA ‘Cavendish banana,’ and Musa sp. BB ‘Klutuk plantain.’ Insect surveys identified eight species visiting male banana inflorescences. Among them, Oscinella sp. (Diptera: Chloropidae) and Bactrocera sp. (Diptera: Tephritidae) were the most widespread and abundant. These species have previously been reported as BBD vectors in other regions. They were likely key contributors to the spread of Rsc on Flores Island.

Abstract. Pramatana F, Hasibuan MM, Tohir RK, Tae CE, Fathurohman F, Maryanto I, Wiantoro S, Supriatna N, Arsa IGBA, Rammang N, Marawali A. 2025. Bat species on Timor Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 564-571. Timor Island, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, is one of the Lesser Sunda regions with unique biodiversity. Updating information as a database needs to be carried out to become the basis for conservation actions at the species and ecosystem levels, considering that bat species are very vulnerable to habitat destruction. This research aims to collect a checklist of bat species on Timor Island by selecting sampling locations based on the habitat's climatic conditions. The study was conducted in 10 research locations, including conservation, forest, village, and one disturbance area. Data was collected using mist nets, harp traps, and interviews with local communities. Suppose there is a record or a species that is doubtful in its identification, a specimen will be made and will then send samples to the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense, Indonesia. Bat research in the Timor Island area was carried out in 1979 and recorded twenty-two species of bats. However, the locations in that research are spread across the Timor Leste region. This study on Timor Island, Indonesia, recorded twenty bat species, including a new record of Dobsonia viridis in the Lesser Sunda Island region. This species was previously documented only in Celebes and Moluccas.

Abstract

The “Ora et Labora” Farmer Group in Naioni Village, Kupang City, has developed horticultural and livestock farming on a three-hectare area cultivating long beans, tomatoes, and chilli peppers using a drip irrigation system. Despite these advancements, farmers remain dependent on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which over time damage soil structure, reduce fertility, and disrupt the balance of soil microorganisms. To address this issue, an organic farming system was introduced as an environmentally friendly alternative using tricho-compost based on Trichoderma spp. and Local Microorganisms (MOL). Tricho-compost improves nutrient availability and suppresses soil-borne pathogens, while MOL acts as a natural starter for organic matter fermentation and a potential biocontrol agent. This Community Service Program (PKM) aimed to enhance farmers’ understanding and skills in producing and applying tricho-compost and MOL. The results demonstrated improved knowledge, technical ability, and motivation among farmers to independently implement organic farming, thereby promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly cultivation systems.
