Abstract

Teaching internships provide essential experiential learning that connects theoretical coursework with real classroom practice. This study examines the challenges faced by pre-service English teachers during a three-month internship in Islamic schools across East Java, from 10 February to 16 May 2025. Using a qualitative design, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals from eight English Education students at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya. The findings reveal three main categories of challenges: (1) teacher-related difficulties such as limited preparation, low self-confidence, insufficient pedagogical competence, challenges in designing assessments, and limited classroom management skills; (2) student-related challenges, including students’ low self-confidence in using English and diverse learning styles; and (3) school-related, including limited technological facilities and curriculum constraints that reduced instructional hours due to religious and institutional priorities. The study emphasizes the need to strengthen practical pedagogical skills, particularly in lesson planning, differentiated instruction, and assessment development, supported by enhanced supervisory mentoring and closer university–school collaboration. These insights underscore the importance of context-responsive teacher education to better prepare future English teachers for diverse educational settings.

Abstract

Background: Teacher competence in early childhood learning plays a crucial role in stimulating children’s creativity and developmental abilities. However, at TK Tunas Bangsa Desa Sinar Harapan, the competence of teachers in conducting music education remains relatively low compared to other subjects. Teachers frequently replace music lessons with visual arts activities such as drawing, indicating limited mastery of musical concepts and teaching strategies Objective: This study aims to analyze the level of teacher competence in music learning and identify the factors that influence the replacement of music lessons with visual arts. The scope of this paper focuses on pedagogical competence, mastery of teaching materials, learning implementation, and teachers’ readiness to deliver music-related activities. Methods: This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected through interviews with teachers, classroom observations, and documentation review to obtain a comprehensive understanding of music learning practices in the classroom. Results: The findings reveal that teachers have limited skills in vocal techniques, rhythm instruction, and the use of simple musical instruments. As a result, teachers tend to avoid music lessons and shift to drawing activities, which they perceive as easier to manage. The study also shows that the lack of training, insufficient learning media, and minimal exposure to music pedagogy significantly affect teachers’ competence. Conclusion: The study concludes that teacher competence in music education at TK Tunas Bangsa is still inadequate and requires strengthening through targeted training, provision of musical learning resources, and continuous professional development. Improved competence is expected to encourage teachers to implement meaningful and consistent music learning in early childhood education.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) remain a major health problem in Biringkanaya District, Makassar City, with high rates of obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, and metabolic disorders. These problems are influenced by an unbalanced diet, low consumption of local foods, and a lack of physical activity. The SIPAKATAU (Synergy of Local Food and Physical Activity) programme was designed to address these issues through nutritional education, my plate demonstrations, physical activity, and the use of locally sourced, easily accessible food to the community. The activities were carried out over a month in Paccerakkang and Berua villages, involving 24 participants, health cadres, and the Paccerakkang community health centre. The intervention included pre-tests, interactive education, hands-on practice, physical activity monitoring, and health checks before and after the activities. The results showed an increase in knowledge from 50% to 75% in the good category, increased implementation of My Plate, and 75% of participants had sufficient physical activity. Health indicators showed improvement, particularly in cholesterol (normal levels increased from 1 to 7 individuals) and uric acid (100% normal). Blood sugar levels showed improvement, while blood pressure and nutritional status required longer-term intervention. The SIPAKATAU programme proved effective in improving community nutrition and health behaviours and is recommended as a model for community-based NCD prevention.

Abstract

In the digital era, streaming platforms have reshaped how students engage with English learning beyond the classroom by providing authentic and easily accessible input. They offer informal learning spaces that foster autonomy and continuous language exposure. This study explores the types of streaming platforms students use, how they practice listening through them, and the reasons behind their preferences. The researchers conducted a qualitative descriptive study involving 50 English major students who completed an online questionnaire and 10 students who participated in semi-structured interviews at a public university in Indonesia. The results reveal that students primarily rely on YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify, while Disney+ and Amazon Prime are less preferred due to subscription barriers. Participants practiced listening in different ways watching English films or series with or without subtitles, replaying specific scenes, listening to music and podcasts while noting new vocabulary, and reflecting on their comprehension. Their reasons for platform choice also varied: YouTube was valued for free access and flexibility, Netflix for authentic dialogue and cultural exposure, and Spotify for convenience during multitasking. These findings suggest that streaming platforms play a dynamic role not only as learning tools but as spaces where students independently regulate strategies, sustain motivation, and build listening proficiency in meaningful and personalized ways.
