Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of Admiral Zheng He's maritime expeditions in the process of Islamization in the Sunda region, specifically how interactions between the Chinese Muslim community and local communities contributed to socio-religious change during the transition from Hinduism and Buddhism to Islam. This study was conducted because the role of Chinese Muslims in the history of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago has received little attention in mainstream literature. The study uses a qualitative analytical approach through historical sources, including local manuscripts, dynastic chronicles, travel notes, and archaeological data related to the missionary activities of scholars who arrived with Zheng He's fleet. The results show that Zheng He's expeditions were not only political and economic missions, but also important vehicles for the spread of Islam in the Sunda region. Figures such as Sheikh Hasanuddin (Sheikh Quro) and Sheikh Nurjati played a central role in establishing early Islamic educational institutions, including Pondok Quro, which later became centers of missionary work in Karawang and Cirebon. Intense interactions between Chinese Muslims and local communities accelerated cultural and religious transformation, demonstrating that Islamization in the Sunda region was a multi-ethnic process connected by international maritime networks. The implications of this research emphasize the need to strengthen maritime history research to understand the contribution of sea routes to the spread of Islam, as well as to encourage the preservation of Chinese Muslim historical sites as sources of public education. These findings also encourage the integration of multiethnic narratives into history curricula and the strengthening of Indonesia-China research collaborations in Islamic history studies. The originality of this research lies in its comprehensive explanation of the relationship between Zheng He's expeditions, the arrival of Chinese Muslim scholars, and early Islamic educational institutions—a perspective rarely explored in previous research.

Abstract

This article examines changes in social mobility in Bogor following the introduction of railways in the early twentieth century by positioning rail transport as a key infrastructure in the process of colonial urbanization. The study demonstrates that railway construction in Bogor cannot be understood merely as a technical innovation in transportation, but rather as an economic–political instrument that integrated the hinterland into the administrative and economic networks of the Dutch East Indies. Using a historical approach grounded in colonial archival sources and secondary references in the form of peer-reviewed academic articles and credible media reports, this research analyzes the relationship between railway development, social mobility, and the transformation of urban space during the period 1900–1930. The findings show that railways operated as a colonial mobility regime that simultaneously expanded horizontal mobility among indigenous populations—through intensified spatial movement and occupational diversification—while failing to open vertical mobility in an equitable manner. Access to education, official positions, and social status remained constrained by colonial structures based on race and class. In addition, railway lines and stations functioned as urban nodes that reconfigured the spatial organization of Bogor according to the logic of timetables, economic extraction, and colonial administration. Consequently, mobility and urbanization in Bogor were produced in a differential manner through colonial infrastructure that both accelerated movement and normalized social inequality. This article argues that railways functioned as a politically charged agent of social change and contributes to the historiography of colonial transportation in Indonesia through an analytical lens centered on mobility, power, and social stratification.

Abstract

The development of information and communication technology has created a new space for interaction through digital media, bringing not only benefits but also various forms of cybercrime, one of which is cyberbullying. This phenomenon is increasingly complex when carried out through social engineering techniques, namely the psychological manipulation of victims to obtain information, instill fear, or pressure them mentally and socially. Social engineering-based cyberbullying not only impacts the victim's psychological aspects but also causes social, reputational, and even economic losses. This article aims to analyze the forms of cyberbullying that use social engineering and examine the legal protections available to victims within the cyber law framework in Indonesia. The research method used is normative legal research with a statutory and conceptual approach, which examines related regulations, such as the Electronic Information and Transactions Law, the Criminal Code, and other relevant regulations. The results of the study indicate that although positive legal instruments have provided a basis for protection for victims of cyberbullying, regulations related to social engineering are still implicit and have not been specifically regulated. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen regulations, improve digital literacy, and adopt an integrated preventive and repressive approach to ensure effective legal protection for victims of cyberbullying in the digital era.

Abstract

This study examines cultural heritage buildings in Garut Regency as architectural historical traces that reflect the social and cultural dynamics of the community since the colonial era. Through a qualitative-descriptive approach and architectural typology analysis, this study explores the form, function, and historical value of historic buildings such as the Pendopo Building, the Old Post Office, and the Papandayan Hotel. The results show that these buildings exhibit a blend of Dutch colonial architectural styles—such as Indische Empire and Art Deco—with adaptations to the tropical climate and Sundanese culture. The building typology is not only a visual representation of the colonial period, but also a symbol of the interaction between power, local communities, and urban space. Conservation efforts still face challenges, particularly from the lack of public awareness and the pressures of modern development. However, revitalization and adaptive reuse initiatives have emerged that open opportunities for the development of heritage-based tourism. This study emphasizes that historic architecture in Garut is not merely an artifact of the past, but a living heritage that needs to be preserved as a cultural identity and a medium for historical learning for future generations.

Abstract

After the Padri War (1803-1837), Tuanku Imam Bondjol was exiled by the Dutch colonial government to Minahasa and Manado. During his exile in Manado, his son, Naali Sutan Caniago, who accompanied Tuanku Imam Bondjol during his exile, wrote a manuscript about his father's struggle. This manuscript is called the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol Manuscript, which is a single manuscript (codex unicus). In general, this manuscript contains a summary of the history of the Padri War in West Sumatra in the 19th century. It contains Tuanku Imam Bondjol's memoirs, his thoughts, and notes on the Padri war. In this study, the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol manuscript is examined using philological and historical methods. This manuscript has been transliterated and translated by Safnir Abu Naim, However, this study will trace the philological stages carried out on the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol manuscript to demonstrate its originality and authenticity. The problem examined in this study is how the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol manuscript stands as a historical source of the Padri War. To that end, a textual study of the translation of the manuscript was conducted using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method modeled by Teun A. Van Dijk. This study also uses the Historical Method with the ultimate goal of compiling a historiography of the struggle of Tuanku Imam Bondjol and the Padri War. From the results of the study, it is concluded that the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol manuscript is an authentic source of the Padri War, a first-hand historical source originating from indigenous records. Before the discovery of this manuscript, sources for the Padri War were generally only from colonial archives.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of power and leadership in the Wawacan Abdul Muluk, a classic Sundanese literary work that holds significant value in Indonesian literary heritage. Through textual analysis and literary hermeneutics, this study aims to identify the leadership values contained in the manuscript, particularly those related to the concept of power from an Islamic perspective. The results show that Wawacan Abdul Muluk presents an ideal leadership model, emphasising three main dimensions: the legitimacy of power derived from noble descent and moral virtue; the exercise of power oriented towards justice and the welfare of the people; and the regeneration of leadership through education and character building. This manuscript reflects the integration of Islamic values with the Sundanese leadership tradition, emphasizing the importance of morality, competence, and social responsibility in exercising power. The findings of this study contribute to understanding the concept of leadership in classical Indonesian literature and its relevance to the development of leadership grounded in local and Islamic values in the contemporary era.
