Abstract

Alternative educational institutions in Indonesia deal with significant problems in maintaining their unique pedagogical approaches, meeting regulatory requirements and societal expectations. This study addresses the problem of balancing institutional autonomy with systemic integration by introducing the adaptive dynamic of alternative education (ADAE) pattern. Using a qualitative approach, data was collected through two focus group discussions (FGDs) with purposively selected participants representing three distinct alternative education institutions: Tanoker in East Java, Komunitas Belajar Qaryah Thayyibah (KBQT) in Central Java, and Sekolah Alam Sukahaji in West Java. The sample comprised 12 participants (3 institution heads and 9 teachers) chosen based on their understanding of their respective institution’s social situations. Additionally, two education experts with expertise in mainstream and alternative education were interviewed. The findings of the study reveal that ADAE is built on three integrated philosophical pillars: theomorphic, eduhumanistic, and futuristic. The pattern demonstrates how alternative educational institutions navigate between autonomy and integration through dynamic positioning influenced by external and internal factors. The research found the practical implications include a framework for alternative institutions that implementation of ADAE enables institutions to maintain their innovative practices, achieving legitimacy through measurable community impact.

Abstract

The Role of Social Studies Education towards Students’ Readiness in Facing Globalization: Social Skills as Moderating Factor. Objective: This study aims to determine the role of social studies education in students' readiness to face globalization through social skills. Methods: This study used a quantitative approach, utilizing data from 40 junior high school students.   Data was collected through a questionnaire using Google Forms on the role of social studies education in preparing students to face globalization through social skills. The data was analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling -Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) statistical testing method to construct four latent variables: social studies learning, social skills, globalization readiness, and attitudes toward adversity and globalization. Findings: SEM analysis indicates that Social Education directly influences social skills. Conversely, social skills directly impact preparation and attitudes toward difficulties and globalization. Social skills modulate the learning of Social Studies regarding attitudes towards difficulties and globalization, but do not influence the readiness for facing globalization in Social Studies learning. Conclusion: This study implies that globalization significantly influences social studies education, necessitating the cultivation of new social skills and competencies to equip students and instructors for a globally interconnected environment. This include promoting critical thinking, cultural understanding, and adaptation to manage the intricacies of global integration. Keywords: social sciences, social skills, education, globalization.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i3.2024136

Abstract

This study aims to develop Augmented Reality integrated handouts to strengthen the independent character of junior high school students on the material of the relics of Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms in Indonesia. The research used the Research and Development method with the 4D development model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate) carried out at SMPN 1 and SMPN 2 Mojowarno, Jombang Regency. The research instruments included material and media expert validation sheets, student response questionnaires for practicality testing, observation sheets and independent character questionnaires to measure product effectiveness. Data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive techniques for validity and practicality with score interpretation criteria, while the effectiveness of strengthening independent character was analyzed using the N-gain test comparing the results of initial and final measurements in the experimental class. The validation results by material experts, media experts, and practitioners showed that the product validity level reached 94.5% which was included in the very valid category. The practicality test obtained a score of 97% in the initial test and 98% in the large-scale implementation of 60 students, both in the very practical category. Measurement of independent character showed a significant increase in both experimental classes with N-gain values reaching 0.92 and 0.90 which were categorized as very independent. This study proves that the Augmented Reality integrated handout effectively strengthens students' independent character while improving understanding of the material of the relics of Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms. This learning media offers an innovative solution that is aligned with the objectives of the Merdeka Curriculum and the Pancasila Student Profile, especially in fostering student independence through the use of digital technology.

Abstract

Attitude improvement is crucial because it will affect student engagement in learning. This study aims to improve students' attitudes by using social action project and project-based learning models and analyze how effective these models are. This study used a pre-test-post-test control group design, for a quasi-experimental research. Thirty students were in the control class and thirty one students were in the experimental class. The research was conducted in one of the state junior high schools in Yogyakarta Province which was selected purposively where the teacher was in a first generation “guru penggerak” program in Merdeka Curriculum context. The instrument used were an observation sheet and student sociopreneur attitude self-assessment questionnaire. The data was analyzed in descriptive statistics. The research’ results are that the social action project model is more effective in improving students' attitudes than project-based learning. The social action project was best in improving empathy whereas the project-based learning was best in improving flexibility in thinking and action. The social action project model is more recommended for use in learning when aimed at improving students' sociopreneur attitudes.
