Abstract

This study explored a simple preparation and characterization of the activated carbon and cloth from the palm kernel shell and compared it to the commercial-water-filter-carbon specification. A new pyrolysis chamber that is easily scaled up using the palm kernel shell itself as a heat source was tested. Two different steps were compared: the alkaline activation process performed before or after the carbonation process in the palm-kernel-shell carbon preparation. The palm-kernel-shell activated carbons prepared with the current method fulfilled the standard quality of activated charcoal except for the ash content. The sequencing step of the preparation affected the adsorption capacity. Instead of the reverse sequence, the soaking palm kernel shells in NaOH before the carbonation process lead to a higher adsorption capacity. The carbon particle stability on the cloth surface was affected by both the adhesive concentration and its size. The ammonia adsorption capacity of activated carbon cloth (ACC) was between 1–4 mg ammonia per g stuck carbon. The preparation and the carbon type source on ACC affected the adsorption capacity. The ACC absorbed and lessened the skim latex odor vapor, nearly odorless depending on the ACC area and the volume of odor vapor.

Abstract

This research has isolated one type of halophilic bacterial strain from the salt pond of Kajhu Village with the code KJ-AB2. This bacterium grew optimally at 10% (w/v) NaCl so it was classified as moderate halophilic bacteria. Several types of halophilic bacteria are known to produce biosurfactants. Biosurfactants are surface active agents that are widely used in several pharmaceutical, food dan petroleum industries. The production of biosurfactants is strongly influenced by the type of carbon source used for bacterial growth. Olive oil, palm oil, sunflower oil, glucose dan glycerol are types of carbon sources used to see their effect in producing biosurfactants. This isolate growed well on the five carbon sources with an average OD600 2.001±0.293 at 72 hours of fermentation. Biosurfactant production was measured by oil spreading test (OST) every 24 hours until 120 hours of fermentation. The highest OST value was obtained when KJ-AB2 isolate was grown on biosurfactant production media using olive oil, sunflower oil dan palm oil with an average OST value of 5.6±0.6 cm, 4.7±0.6 cm, dan 4.6±0.7 cm, respectively.

Abstract

Science laboratories play an important role in the success of chemistry, physics, and biology education in schools. Students and teachers need facilities and infrastructure to prove the veracity of theory and to establish the relationship between theory and practice through experiential learning activities. In addition to teachers and students, the roles of research assistants and work managers are also very important to put practical learning into practice. To improve the knowledge and skills of science room management in schools, we will standardize the science room management of laboratory assistants and work instructors. This activity began with a pre-test, followed by the provision of teaching materials through lectures and discussions, quizzes through a method of promoting understanding, lab operations through a real-action approach, and a post-test. The training will be held for 4 days from August 9 to 12, 2022, at the Aceh Barat Daya District Education Office, where classroom lessons will be held, and at SMA Negri 6 Aceh, where participants will practice setting up their laboratories. It was conducted at two locations in Bharat Daya. education. Participants followed the learning process in the classroom very well as evidenced by achieving good quiz scores with an average accuracy of 7-12 out of 15 questions, or 47-80%. With Kahoot learning games, the quizzes at the end of each learning material add extra fun and motivation to learners and are very helpful in the evaluation process during the training process. Furthermore, post-test results showed that participants' knowledge increased by up to 80.4% compared to pre-test results.
