Abstract

This community engagement project addresses the limited use of interactive, environmentally friendly teaching methods in primary education, particularly among teachers at SD Gugus Dham Lubuk, Aceh Besar. The study aimed to introduce and train teachers using the ecoprint steaming technique as an innovative learning approach that integrates environmental sustainability with hands-on art-based activities. The program followed a structured process of socialization, training, classroom application, and mentoring, involving 30 teachers in demonstrations and practice using natural materials such as leaves and flowers. Before the training, 85% of teachers had never been exposed to ecoprint and still relied on lecture-based methods that limited creativity and engagement. Post-training results indicated increased teacher participation, creativity in lesson planning, and readiness to apply ecoprint in classrooms. Teachers successfully integrated the method into science and art lessons, enhancing student engagement while fostering environmental awareness. Beyond these immediate outcomes, sustainability measures were established through digital modules, a class “ecoprint corner”, and continuous mentoring with local stakeholders. These efforts ensure long-term adoption of interactive, eco-friendly teaching practices. Furthermore, the initiative demonstrated the potential for sustainable creative economy activities, as teachers and students produced marketable products showcased in a school exhibition, linking education with environmental stewardship and local economic empowerment.

Abstract

Background: Stunting in children under five years of age is a chronic nutritional problem that has long-term impacts on the quality of physical growth and cognitive development of children. Aceh has recorded a high prevalence of stunting (SSGBI 2019:34,18%); however, studies that integrate national data to identify actionable local determinants remain limited. Objective: To identify factors associated with stunting among children under five years of age in Aceh and determine the dominant factors that could become the focus of local policy interventions. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed secondary data from the 2019 Susenas and SSGBI. The sample was selected as a subset of all households in Aceh Province that were recorded in both surveys and met the inclusion criteria (children aged 0–59 months with complete anthropometric and related variable data), resulting in 1,019 children in 2019. Multistage stratified cluster sampling was conducted by the BPS and Ministry of Health. Stratified data from Aceh Province were used for this analysis. The analysis included descriptive analysis, bivariate tests (chi-square), and multivariate logistic regression to identify determinant factors (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR], 95% confidence level). Results: The prevalence of stunting among children under five years of age in Aceh was 27,67% (n=1,019). In the bivariate analysis, factors significantly associated with stunting were Early Initiation of Breastfeeding (EIBF) (p=0,002), exclusive breastfeeding (p=0,043), access to food (p=0,033), access to information media (p=0,001), parental education (p<0,05), birth spacing (p=0,000), and area (urban/rural) (p=0,003). In the multivariate model, the dominant factors increasing the odds of stunting were severe household food insecurity (AOR=1,56), not accessing health information media (AOR=1,51), living in rural areas (AOR=1.40), and not practicing EIBF (AOR=1,40), all of which were significant at p<0,05.Conclusion: Food security is the most dominant factor associated with stunting in Aceh, Indonesia. Recommended interventions include strengthening family- and community-based food security programs (including targeted food assistance and food diversification), improving maternal nutrition education during the first 1,000 days of life with empowerment strategies through accessible information media, and enhancing breastfeeding support and posyandu services in rural areas.

Abstract

Smoking behavior among adolescents is a health problem that may cause long-term impacts on both active and passive smokers. This community service activity aimed to improve students’ understanding and awareness of the dangers of cigarette smoke through an educational approach combined with a simple demonstration. The activity was conducted at SMP Negeri 14 Banda Aceh involving seventh and eighth grade students. The methods included interactive lectures on harmful chemical substances in cigarettes and their effects on the respiratory system, as well as a lung model demonstration to visualize the process of smoke inhalation and the accumulation of hazardous residues. The results showed that students’ knowledge of the dangers of smoking increased, they were able to identify harmful chemical components in cigarettes, and they demonstrated more critical attitudes toward smoking behavior and exposure to secondhand smoke. The visual demonstration helped students understand the concepts more concretely and fostered early preventive awareness. It can be concluded that this activity was effective as an experience-based health education model to support the development of a young generation who are aware of the importance of living free from cigarette smoke.

Abstract

The intertidal zone of Iboih Beach in Sukakarya District, Sabang, has significant macroalgae diversity with different substrate variations. This study examined the diversity, distribution, and ecological significance of macroalgae using the quadrat method with purposive sampling technique on three plots measuring 2 2 m (coral, sand, and rock substrates), each replicated three times. Measurements of environmental parameters including temperature (using a thermometer), salinity (refractometer), and depth (Secchi disk) were carried out prior to sampling to ensure that environmental conditions were recorded. The results showed Galaxaura rugosa as the dominant species (INP 63.22), followed by Halimeda opuntia (38.42) and Chaetomorpha crassa (35.27), which showed a preference for hard substrates rich in nutrients. In contrast, Caulerpa sp. had the lowest INP (9.33), indicating specific habitat adaptation. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H=1.57) was in the moderate category, with an average INP of 28.575 reflecting a diverse community occupying different ecological niches. The coral substrate supported the highest abundance due to its stability and nutrient availability. This finding confirms the crucial role of substrate characteristics in the structure of intertidal macroalgal communities. Keywords:DiversityMacroalgaeIntertidal zoneSubstrateIboih Beach

Abstract

The increasing use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) among young adults in Indonesia has emerged as a growing public health concern. This qualitative study investigates the phenomenon of e-cigarette use among young people aged 18–25 in Banda Aceh by exploring the underlying motivations, knowledge levels, perceptions of health risks, and the influence of social and environmental factors. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with informants who actively use e-cigarettes. Thematic analysis revealed four major interrelated themes: reasons for use, knowledge about e-cigarettes, perceived health effects, and social support and accessibility. The findings show that many users are motivated by curiosity, a desire to follow modern trends, or as an attempt to switch from conventional cigarettes due to the perceived lower health risks. However, participants demonstrated varying levels of knowledge—while some were aware of basic components like nicotine and flavoring agents, few had an accurate understanding of long-term health impacts. Most informants believed that e-cigarettes are a “safer” alternative, despite acknowledging that their safety is not guaranteed. Social factors, such as peer influence and the presence of family members who also smoke, play a major role in normalizing the behavior. Additionally, easy access to vape products, aggressive marketing through social media, and appealing flavors further contribute to the habit’s popularity among youth. This study underscores that e-cigarette use in Banda Aceh is a socially and culturally embedded behavior, calling for comprehensive public education, regulatory enforcement, and targeted interventions to mitigate future health risks.
