Abstract

Mathematics education in the 21st century compels educators to not only instruct on procedures and formulas but also to create learning experiences that foster contextual problem modelling, critical reasoning, collaboration, and the effective use of digital technology to cultivate adaptive and advanced cognitive skills in students, particularly in elementary schools. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Auditory, Intellectuality, Repetition (AIR) learning model in improving the mathematics learning outcomes of fifth-grade elementary students. Using a quantitative approach with an Interrupted Time Series design, this study involved 28 students who completed a pre-test prior to the AIR-based learning intervention and a post-test afterward. The Number-Test was used to measure students’ mathematics achievement. Data obtained from both tests were analyzed quantitatively. A paired sample t-test was conducted to compare students’ pre-test and post-test scores. The normalized gain (N-gain) score was also calculated to determine the degree of improvement. The average pre-test score was 64.46, while the post-test average increased to 85. The results of paired sample t-test analysis showed a significant improvement in students’ achievement (p < 0.001). The normalized gain (N-gain) score was 0.57, indicating a moderate level of improvement. Further analysis using an independent sample t-test revealed no significant difference in learning outcomes between male and female students (p = 0.685), suggesting that the AIR model was equally effective across gender. Overall, the AIR learning model positively contributed to enhancing students’ mathematical understanding, particularly in least common multiple (LCM) and greatest common factor (GCF) topics.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between inquisitiveness and problem-solving difficulties among pre-service elementary school teachers when solving mathematical problems containing contradictory information. The aim is to identify how different levels of inquisitiveness influence cognitive, metacognitive, and affective difficulties and to provide a deeper explanation of how these difficulties emerge during the reasoning process. A qualitative descriptive case study was conducted with 33 fifth-semester students in the Elementary Teacher Education program at Universitas PGRI Madiun. Data were collected through problem-solving tests, think-aloud, and interviews. Students were categorized into high, medium, and low inquisitiveness groups based on a questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out through coding, reduction, and triangulation across instruments, followed by cross-case comparison to ensure the consistency of themes and strengthen the interpretation of findings. The results showed that inquisitiveness strongly influenced the types and intensity of difficulties. Students with low inquisitiveness often experienced cognitive difficulties, such as reliance on formulas without verification, and affective difficulties, such as nervousness and frustration, which led them to stop. Students with medium inquisitiveness tended to experience metacognitive difficulties, recognizing contradictions but failing to regulate or adjust their strategies. High-inquisitiveness students demonstrated persistence and attempts at verification, although occasional metacognitive challenges still appeared. The study also found that inquisitiveness shaped students’ emotional responses, with higher inquisitiveness associated with greater tolerance for confusion and a stronger willingness to re-evaluate conflicting information. Inquisitiveness plays a critical role in supporting conceptual verification, self-regulation, and emotional resilience when solving mathematical problems with contradictory information. These findings emphasize that inquisitiveness is not merely a cognitive trait but also an affective resource that helps students manage uncertainty. Strengthening this disposition may improve future teachers’ reasoning and their ability to guide students through complex problem-solving situations. Keywords: inquisitiveness, problem solving difficulties, contradictory information, pre-service elementary teachers.

Abstract

This study examined how situating Problem-Based Learning (PBL) within an ethnomathematical context of local culture functions as a plausible mechanism for numeracy development among elementary school students, responding to calls in the literature to move beyond media- or worksheet-development studies toward theoretically grounded integrations of pedagogy and culture. Using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design, the study involved 19 students in an experimental class and 18 students in a control class at a public elementary school in Cepu, Central Java, Indonesia. Numeracy was measured with a ten-item essay test covering number sense, arithmetic operations, problem-solving, and data interpretation (content validity: Pearson r > 0.444 for all items; reliability: Cronbach's alpha = 0.982). Because the posttest data violated normality and homogeneity assumptions, the Mann-Whitney U test was used. Results showed a significant difference in posttest scores (U = 43.000; Z = -3.979; p = .000; Cohen's d = 1.53, a large effect), with the experimental class achieving a higher N-Gain (67.81%, moderate category) than the control class (30.42%, moderate category). However, a substantial baseline difference between groups (pretest Cohen's d = 1.17) constitutes a threat to internal validity that qualifies causal interpretation of these gains. The findings extend prior ethnomathematics research - which has largely focused on instructional media or worksheets - by showing that embedding a local cultural problem context directly within PBL's problem-solving syntax offers a plausible contextual-relevance pathway for numeracy gains, while underscoring the need for randomized, multi-site replication before broader causal or generalizable claims can be made.
