Abstract

One method for laboratories to achieve accreditation is through proficiency testing, which relies on the availability of reference materials from specialized providers or manufacturers. This research investigates the stability of both imported and locally sourced soybean meal, which serves as control samples in animal feed laboratories. The parameters assessed in this research include water content, ash content, and crude protein levels. Statistical analyses were conducted according to the proficiency testing guidelines outlined in SNI ISO 13528:2016, focusing on homogeneity and stability assessments. The results indicate that both local and imported soybean meals are homogeneous across the tested parameters. However, the stability tests reveal differing results: local soybean meal shows instability in water content and crude protein, while its ash content remains stable. In contrast, the imported soybean meal exhibits stable water and ash content but unstable crude protein levels. In conclusion, soybean meal can be utilized as a control sample in feed laboratories for short-term applications due to its susceptibility to changes in material characteristics. Abstract

Blanching is the most common pretreatment method for fruits and vegetables to maintain product quality. Numerous studies revealed desirable impacts of the process to total phenolic content, while the others showed opposite results. In addition, some differences in the blanching condition such as methods and classification of fruits and vegetables were also known able to affect total phenolic content. This study aimed to analyze the effect of blanching on total phenolic content in vegetables and fruits through a meta-analysis approach. Study selection was conducted with a PRISMA method. There were 28 articles and 82 data used for meta-analysis. The data were analyzed by Hedges’d to calculate the effect size with confidence interval (CI) utilizing OpenMee software. The result showed that blanching demonstrated significant effects on the rise of total phenolic content (hedges’d[95% CI]: 0.782 [0.037 to 1.527]; p<0.05). Based on fruits and vegetables subgroups, the blanching significantly affected the increase of total phenolic content in leaves (hedges’d[95% CI]: 1.484 [0.185–2.782]) and fruits (hedges’d[95% CI]: 2.504 [0.153–4.854] compared to stems and stalks, fruits as vegetable, shoots and sprouts, pulse, and flowers. Meanwhile, in terms of blanching method subgroups, hot water blanching (hedges’d[95% CI]: 1.096 [0.234–1.959]) had significant effects on the rise of total phenolic content compared to steam blanching. Moreover, this meta-analysis was robust against publication bias.

Abstract

The meta-analysis in this study was conducted to determine the protein and energy requirements of various cattle breeds in Indonesia. A database was compiled from various research articles that involved cattle as the experimental animals, focusing on studies that reported energy and protein intake, initial body weight, and average daily gain (ADG). In total, 57 articles covering different cattle breeds in Indonesia, with 191 data points, were integrated into the database. The database specified different breeds (Aceh, Bali, Madura, Peranakan Ongole (PO), Sumba Ongole (SO), and Local) and sexes. Regressing ADG used to determine maintenance and gain requirements of dry matter, energy, and protein with dry matter intake (DMI), total digestible nutrient intake (TDNI), and crude protein intake (CPI), respectively. An intercept (where ADG= 0 kg/kg MBW/d) and a slope (required nutrient intake per unit ADG) were taken as maintenance and gain requirements, respectively. Results revealed that protein and energy requirement for maintenance (CPm and TDNm) of all cattle breeds varied in values, ranging from 0.0014 to 0.0102 kg/kg MBW/d (Madura and PO breeds) and 0.0232 to 0.0687 kg/kg MBW/d (Aceh and PO breeds), respectively. Each cattle breed in Indonesia has its particular CP and TDN requirements. Both energy and protein requirements for maintenance (CPm and TDNm) and gain (CPg and TDNg) varied in value for each breed.

Abstract

This study was proposed to provide general conclusions regarding the potential of feeding the meal worm (Tenebrio molitor) to broiler productivity and healthy using the meta-analysis method. The research was initiated with a search for articles through the Google Scholar and Scopus databases and 1923 articles were obtained using the keywords Tenebrio molitor, mealworm, broiler chicken, performance, feed conversion ratio, broilers, caterpillars, carcasses, body weight, feed, Hongkong caterpillars connected with Boolean operators AND and OR. Furthermore, article selection was carried out based on the PRISMA flow chart using Microsoft Excel and Mendeley. The results of data extraction from 25 articles included in the meta-analysis were then processed in the form of a database in Microsoft Excel, converted to the same unit and then analyzed with mixed model procedures using Statistical Analysis System (SAS) software. The parameters measured were body weight (BW), body weight gain (BWG), average daily growth (ADG), feed consumption (FI), average daily feed intake (ADFI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), carcass weight (CW), carcass yield (CY), abdominal fat, total protein, cholesterol, glucose, uric acid, hemoglobin, erythrocytes, leukocytes, albumin, and globulin. Data from each article were tabulated in Microsoft Excel software. The results showed that the use of Tenebrio molitor as animal feed showed a quadratically significant effect in reducing BWG (62,13 g), FI (112,42 g), CY (70,47%), albumin (20,71), and UA (5,44) (P0,05). However, there was no significant effect (P0,05) on BW, ADG, ADFI, FCR, CW, abdominal fat, total protein, cholesterol, glucose, hemoglobin, erythrocytes, leukocytes, and globulin by utilizing Tenebrio molitor as broiler feed. It can be concluded that the provision of Tenebrio molitor has the potential as broiler feed. The optimal use of Tenebrio molitor in broiler chickens is 17,04%. The feeding dose must be considered because Tenebrio molitor contains antinutrients in the form of chitin and tannin to avoid negative effect on the performance and health of broiler chickens.

Abstract

This meta-analysis compiles data on buffalo consumption of cassava as a feed ingredient to evaluate its impact on in vivo rumen fermentation, feed intake, nutrient intake, growth performance, digestibility, nitrogen metabolism, haematology, microbiology, and milk yield. A systematic search of Scopus and Web of Science identified 19 in vivo experiments. Cassava varieties were categorized as by-products, foliage, and roots, while buffaloes were stratified based on management system, breed, and sex. A linear mixed model was applied to estimate the effects of cassava inclusion. The findings indicated feed and nutrient intake, particularly crude protein intake and nitrogen retention, increased significantly (p<0.05), while crude protein digestibility showed no significant difference. Microbiological parameters, including total bacterial and fungal counts, also increased significantly (p<0.05), whereas methane production after 24 hours declined significantly (p<0.05). Although production parameters such as body weight, feed conversion, and milk yield were not significantly affected, a trend toward improvement was observed, except for feed conversion. Cassava root and foliage exhibited the highest digestibility and nitrogen retention compared to by-product (p<0.05). A restricted feeding system resulted in higher ammonia (NH3-N) concentrations, protozoa count, and proteolytic and cellulolytic microbial populations compared to ad libitum feeding and an extensive system (p<0.05). Murrah buffaloes showed greater feed intake, while male buffaloes demonstrated higher digestibility (p<0.05). In conclusion, dietary cassava, approximately 1.5% to 20.5% DM, potentially stimulates rumen fermentation, nutrient intake, digestibility, and microbiology but has only a modest effect on production parameters. High cassava inclusion may reduce feed acceptability, thereby decreasing feed efficiency.

Abstract

Optimizing dietary energy and amino acid levels is essential for enhancing the performance and cost-efficiency of laying hens. The primary goals were to identify the optimal apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn) and digestible lysine (dLys) levels that maximize hen-day production (HDP) and egg weight (EW) while minimizing feed conversion ratio (FCR) and FC. A total of 150 cages, each housing five hens, were used. Hens with 24 weeks of age were assigned to ten dietary treatments following a central composite design (CCD), with AMEn levels ranging from 2,400 to 2,733 kcal/kg and dLys from 0.42% to 1.02%. The experiment was carried out during peak production (24 to 38 weeks of age). Response surface methodology (RSM) combined with CCD effectively optimized AMEn and dAA levels, providing practical insights for formulating cost-effective diets for commercial laying hens. Dietary dLys significantly influenced HDP and EW, while AMEn affected feed intake (FI). The optimal conditions, determined by the desirability function (DF), were AMEn of 2,660 kcal/kg and dLys of 0.81%, maximizing HDP and EW with minimal FCR and FC. Excluding EW from DF optimization, the best results were achieved at AMEn of 2,623 kcal/kg and dLys of 0.78%.

Abstract

Food waste, a type of solid waste is a significant environmental concern, particularly in developing nations. The utilization of insects as bioconversion agents is becoming more significant due to rapid population expansion and the rise in organic waste on a global scale. The research on waste bioconversion utilizing insects is now limited to a few bug species and lacks long-term strategy and sustainability considerations. This study conducted bibliometric analysis and a comprehensive literature evaluation on studies related to waste bioconversion processes utilizing insect bioconversion agents in publications from 2013 to 2023. A bibliometric analysis will offer an overview of research and collaboration trends in this sector, while a systematic literature review (SLR) will provide summaries on selected issues from relevant works. Studies on waste bioconversion using insects have primarily focused on key factors such as the type of organic waste, the rate of waste reduction achieved, the formulation of substrates tailored to insect nutritional needs, and the downstream utilization of insect biomass as feed or for energy production (biogas, biodiesel, and biomass fuel). Most of the existing research centers on the Black Soldier Fly (169 publications), which has demonstrated high efficiency in reducing organic waste. This concentration on BSF highlights a research gap and potential opportunities for investigating other insect species like crickets, mealworms that may offer different advantages in specific waste types or environmental conditions.

Abstract

The effect of temperature treatment, either increasing or decreasing the temperature of leuco dyes, can produce thermochromic by looking at the changing color of samples resulting from experiments. The colors that are seen namely brightness (L), a* value, b* value, chroma, degree of hue (oHue), color difference ( E), and color density (CD). This research was conducted to analyze the temperature treatment of the thermochromic leuco dye against color characteristics resulting from meta-analysis using secondary data from pre-existing research. The total number of journals used was 21 studies and the data obtained were 82 sets of treatments. The data were then analyzed using IBM SPSS software, which used quadratic and linear regression models. The results of the study with a temperature range between -8°C to 95°C show that the effect of temperature treatment with an increase in temperature can cause a significant elevation impact on brightness values (p <0.002, R2 0.174), b* (P <0.01, R2 0.146), color difference ( E) (P <0.0012, R2 0.117), and ohue (P <0.053, R2 0.087). A significant reduction effect can be seen in the chroma value (P <0.007 R2 0.134) and the color density (P <0.007, R2 0.128). The impact of temperature treatment was not significant (p> 0.1) for a* value.

Abstract

Oil Palm fronds (OPF) as the main waste of oil palm plantations have considerable promise as a small ruminant feed. Unfortunately, due to the diversity of previous findings, a clear response pattern has still to be determined. For this reason, in the present study, meta-analysis was employed to synthesize existing findings regarding the effect of OPF as a small ruminant feed. The database was constructed using data from ten published articles that fit the inclusion criteria. The applied statistical model was a mixed model. Findings revealed no significant effect (P>0.05) of OPF inclusion on nutrient intake, nutrient digestibility, animal performance, and nitrogen utilization. Despite this, there was a tendency for dry matter intake (DMI) to increase and average daily gain (ADG) to decrease with the greater presence of OPF in the feed. The insignificance of the present findings suggests that OPF can be included in small ruminant feed without causing significant negative effects.

Abstract

Diets formulated for laying hens often contain anti-nutritional factors—such as non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs), trypsin inhibitors, and phytate—that can impede nutrient absorption. To mitigate these effects and enhance feed efficiency, the poultry industry increasingly incorporates exogenous enzymes like xylanase and protease, either separately or synergistically, to improve the digestibility and nutritional value of by-product feed ingredients. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of xylanase and/or protease enzyme supplementation in laying hen diets on nutrient digestibility and overall bird performance. Four distinct dietary treatments were formulated, including a negative control (NC) diet that did not contain any enzyme supplementation. The remaining three dietary treatments were modifications of the negative control (NC) diet, incorporating either xylanase, protease, or a combination of both enzymes (xylanase + protease). The NC diet was formulated to contain 2,567 kcal/kg of apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen (AMEn), 0.77% digestible lysine (dLys), and phytase supplementation. Performance trial showed that supplementation of protease and xylanase+protease had higher (p<0.05) hen day production (HDP) compared to NC (88.29 and 88.69% vs 83.53%, respectively). AMEn determination study showed that only xylanase improved (p<0.05) AMEn, compared to NC (2,754 vs 2,585) kcal/kg. Amino acid digestibility (dAA) study showed that xylanase and xylanase+protease improved (p<0.05) dLys by 0.04% and 0.07% respectively. In summary, supplementation of xylanase and protease enhances nutrient utilization and production performance in laying hens fed high by-product diets. The combined use of both enzymes showed the greatest benefits, suggesting that multi-enzyme strategies may be more effective than single-enzyme approaches. These results support the use of enzyme supplementation to enhance feed efficiency and sustainability in poultry production.
