Abstract

Food waste, a type of solid waste is a significant environmental concern, particularly in developing nations. The utilization of insects as bioconversion agents is becoming more significant due to rapid population expansion and the rise in organic waste on a global scale. The research on waste bioconversion utilizing insects is now limited to a few bug species and lacks long-term strategy and sustainability considerations. This study conducted bibliometric analysis and a comprehensive literature evaluation on studies related to waste bioconversion processes utilizing insect bioconversion agents in publications from 2013 to 2023. A bibliometric analysis will offer an overview of research and collaboration trends in this sector, while a systematic literature review (SLR) will provide summaries on selected issues from relevant works. Studies on waste bioconversion using insects have primarily focused on key factors such as the type of organic waste, the rate of waste reduction achieved, the formulation of substrates tailored to insect nutritional needs, and the downstream utilization of insect biomass as feed or for energy production (biogas, biodiesel, and biomass fuel). Most of the existing research centers on the Black Soldier Fly (169 publications), which has demonstrated high efficiency in reducing organic waste. This concentration on BSF highlights a research gap and potential opportunities for investigating other insect species like crickets, mealworms that may offer different advantages in specific waste types or environmental conditions.

Abstract

The effect of temperature treatment, either increasing or decreasing the temperature of leuco dyes, can produce thermochromic by looking at the changing color of samples resulting from experiments. The colors that are seen namely brightness (L), a* value, b* value, chroma, degree of hue (oHue), color difference ( E), and color density (CD). This research was conducted to analyze the temperature treatment of the thermochromic leuco dye against color characteristics resulting from meta-analysis using secondary data from pre-existing research. The total number of journals used was 21 studies and the data obtained were 82 sets of treatments. The data were then analyzed using IBM SPSS software, which used quadratic and linear regression models. The results of the study with a temperature range between -8°C to 95°C show that the effect of temperature treatment with an increase in temperature can cause a significant elevation impact on brightness values (p <0.002, R2 0.174), b* (P <0.01, R2 0.146), color difference ( E) (P <0.0012, R2 0.117), and ohue (P <0.053, R2 0.087). A significant reduction effect can be seen in the chroma value (P <0.007 R2 0.134) and the color density (P <0.007, R2 0.128). The impact of temperature treatment was not significant (p> 0.1) for a* value.

Abstract

Oil Palm fronds (OPF) as the main waste of oil palm plantations have considerable promise as a small ruminant feed. Unfortunately, due to the diversity of previous findings, a clear response pattern has still to be determined. For this reason, in the present study, meta-analysis was employed to synthesize existing findings regarding the effect of OPF as a small ruminant feed. The database was constructed using data from ten published articles that fit the inclusion criteria. The applied statistical model was a mixed model. Findings revealed no significant effect (P>0.05) of OPF inclusion on nutrient intake, nutrient digestibility, animal performance, and nitrogen utilization. Despite this, there was a tendency for dry matter intake (DMI) to increase and average daily gain (ADG) to decrease with the greater presence of OPF in the feed. The insignificance of the present findings suggests that OPF can be included in small ruminant feed without causing significant negative effects.

Abstract

Diets formulated for laying hens often contain anti-nutritional factors—such as non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs), trypsin inhibitors, and phytate—that can impede nutrient absorption. To mitigate these effects and enhance feed efficiency, the poultry industry increasingly incorporates exogenous enzymes like xylanase and protease, either separately or synergistically, to improve the digestibility and nutritional value of by-product feed ingredients. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of xylanase and/or protease enzyme supplementation in laying hen diets on nutrient digestibility and overall bird performance. Four distinct dietary treatments were formulated, including a negative control (NC) diet that did not contain any enzyme supplementation. The remaining three dietary treatments were modifications of the negative control (NC) diet, incorporating either xylanase, protease, or a combination of both enzymes (xylanase + protease). The NC diet was formulated to contain 2,567 kcal/kg of apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen (AMEn), 0.77% digestible lysine (dLys), and phytase supplementation. Performance trial showed that supplementation of protease and xylanase+protease had higher (p<0.05) hen day production (HDP) compared to NC (88.29 and 88.69% vs 83.53%, respectively). AMEn determination study showed that only xylanase improved (p<0.05) AMEn, compared to NC (2,754 vs 2,585) kcal/kg. Amino acid digestibility (dAA) study showed that xylanase and xylanase+protease improved (p<0.05) dLys by 0.04% and 0.07% respectively. In summary, supplementation of xylanase and protease enhances nutrient utilization and production performance in laying hens fed high by-product diets. The combined use of both enzymes showed the greatest benefits, suggesting that multi-enzyme strategies may be more effective than single-enzyme approaches. These results support the use of enzyme supplementation to enhance feed efficiency and sustainability in poultry production.

Abstract

The effect of using saponins on ruminants' performance differed from several published research data based on the level of saponins added to the feed. This research was conducted to analyze the effect of saponins on fermentation characteristics, digestibility, and estimation of methane in ruminants with a mixed model approach from published journal articles—a total of 127 studies from 32 journals national and international. The variable measured included the level of saponins (%), dry matter intake, Average Daily Gain (ADG), Dry Matter Digestibility (DMD), Organic Matter Digestibility (OMD), Crude protein (CP), Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF), protozoa population, bacterial population, Volatile Fatty Acid (VFA), acetate/C2, propionate/C3, butyrate/C4, valerate/C5, acetate/propionate (C2/C3), NH3, pH, and methane gas production. The results showed that using saponins in ruminants increased ADG, CP, ADF, NDF degradation, Total VFA, and proportion of propionate. The addition of saponins level reduced the protozoa population, acetate proportion, and the ratio of acetate: to propionate (C2/C3). In contrast, feed intake and digestibility decreased with the administration of saponin. The bacterial population were similar among treatments, and methane production increased by increasing saponins. In conclusion, the administration of saponin level recommended is 0.3-3.1% of the total ration to improve performance and increase feed efficiency.

Abstract

Herbal plants in animal feed offers a more natural and safer alternative than synthetic antibiotics, which can lead to bacterial resistance and leave residues in poultry products. This meta-analysis study evaluated the potential of Moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaves extract as a feed additive for broiler chickens, comparing two administration methods, inclusion in feed or dilution in drinking water. Data were obtained from 29 relevant articles sourced from Google Scholar and Scopus, resulting in the analysis of 123 studies using SAS software. The results showed that administering Moringa leaves in feed significantly increased final body weight and improved feed conversion ratio (FCR), with an average FCR value of 1.92. No significant effects (P>0.05) on were identified in Moringa-boost drinking water. The average final weight of chickens given Moringa in feed compared to in drinking water was 2.09 kg vs. 2.04 kg. The carcass yield from Moringa extract in feed compared to drinking water was 71.11% vs. 78.35%. Conclusively, solid Moringa leaf extract at a dose of 0.71–1.04% is a more effective feed additive because higher dosages induce anti-nutritional factors like tannins and saponins that reduce performance. This finding offers a valuable reference for farmers to utilize local resources in cost-effective and eco-friendly way to enhance broiler chicken production efficiency.

Abstract

The study aims to analyze the influence of feed given (rice straw) of methane gas generated from the digestion occurs in the rumen, production and quality of milk produced, and the influence of methane gas generated on the production and quality of milk produced. Materials used is 12 tail of dairy cow FH (Friesian Holland) inlactation 2-4 at KUNAK, rice straw and elephant grass feed, concentrates, pulp, animal feces, 500 ml fresh milk samples of each dairy cattle, and others. Variables measured was feed intake and digestibility,production of methane gas, as well as the production and quality of milk. The data was processed with SPSS using random design complete with 3 treatments, each 4 dairy cattle. The results showed that the average feed intake and digestibility was found highest on treatment by rice straw feed, production of methane gas generated is also the highest of 6601.90 KJ/d due to high crude fiber content, but most milk production low at 10.06 l / head / day because it is influenced bymethane gas generated on the production.On average the quality of milk in rice straw feeding treatment was higher than other treatments.

Abstract

Fatty acid content and carcass characteristics are two meat quality traits consumers choose to ob tain healthy and high-quality lamb. Genetic improvement of fatty acid content and carcass characteris tics in sheep is important to increase the public appeal of lamb meat. The Biglycan gene (BGN) is a gene that functions to regulate the growth and maintenance of connective tissues, such as bone and cartilage. This study examined the polymorphism of the BGN gene to get a deeper understanding of the correlation between fatty acid content and carcass traits in Indonesian sheep. The PCR-RFLP ap proach was used to detect polymorphism in the BGN gene in meat samples obtained from the longissi mus dorsi region of 115 rams aged between 10 and 12 months. The General Linear Model (GLM) was used test to analyze genotyping through association studies between genotypes and phenotypic attrib utes. The results indicated that the carcass' fatty acid composition, including tridecanoic acid (C13:0), arachidonic acid (C20:4n-6), and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), as well as the BGN gene with SNP point g. 77807325 G>C (GG and CC genotypes), were significantly (P<0.05) related to these traits. Genotype GG was more associated with carcass percentage traits than other genotypes, whereas genotype CC was best associated with carcass length traits. The BGN gene with SNP point g. 77807325 G>C can be a potential genetic marker for selecting fatty acid (tridecanoic acid C13:0), pol yunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), arachidonic acid), carcass percentage, and carcass length in sheep meat in Indonesia.

Abstract

Regulasi pelabelan kedaluwarsa pangan nasional sangat penting dibuat menjadi lebih dinamis dan tanggap terhadap perubahan regulasi perdagangan internasional. Sampai sekarang, regulasi nasional masih mewajibkan aturan penulisan menggunakan frasa yang seragam “Baik Digunakan Sebelum” disertai pencantuman tanggal, bulan dan tahun kedaluwarsa. Sejak tahun 2018, naskah regulasi Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), CXS – 1985 revisi 2018, mewajibkan dua jenis kategori frasa: yang pertama adalah kategori kedaluwarsa best before atau best before end, yang kedua adalah kategori use by atau expiration date. Kedua kategori waktu kedaluwarsa tersebut bersifat mandatory dan telah di terapkan di sebagian besar negara yang menjadi tujuan ekspor seperti negara anggota MEE dan negara-negara di Asia khususnya Jepang dan Korea Selatan. Pemerintah perlu segera mengadopsi aturan pelabelan waktu kedaluwarsa yang baru berdasarkan kedua kategori yang diuraikan dalam CAC- CXS – 1985 revisi 2018 tersebut. Terjemahan yang sebaiknya digunakan pada kategori yang baru use by atau expiration date adalah frasa “Tanggal Kedaluwarsa”.

Abstract

Controlled/slow-release fertilizers (CSRF) continue to be developed because of the need to increase agricultural productivity and reduce the economic, social, and environmental impacts of conventional fertilizers leaching into nature. Additionally, the use of biodegradable polymers as CSRF materials continues to be a priority in CSRF development. Therefore, this review synthesizes the current research on lignin- and polysaccharide-based CSRFs and emphasize their compatibility and performance in agricultural applications. Lignin, an abundant and renewable biopolymer, was evaluated for its effectiveness as a slow-release agent in CSRF. Studies have demonstrated the potential of lignin to improve nutrient release profiles and environmental sustainability when used alone or in combination with other polymers. Polysaccharides, which are known for their biocompatibility and biodegradability, have also been explored. The incorporation of lignin into polysaccharide-based CSRFs has been highlighted, particularly in starch, cellulose, chitosan, and sodium alginate matrices. These composites offer improved mechanical properties, controlled nutrient release, and enhanced soil water retention. The challenges and future directions regarding lignin- and polysaccharide-based CSRF are also reviewed. These findings underscore the importance of developing sustainable fertilizer technologies to meet future food demands while mitigating environmental impacts.
