It aims to identify the kind of signs implied in Victoria’s Secret advertisements and to analyze the meaning of the signs implied in Victoria’s Secret advertisements. This study used advertisements as primary data. This study applied the documentation method and note-taking technique in collecting data. This study used qualitative methods and the data was analyzed descriptively. The result of this study was presented in the informal method. Three theories were applied in this study. Dyer's (1982) theory was used to analyze the signs, particularly the verbal and visual signs found in the data. Then, the verbal signs meaning was analyzed through the theory from Barthes (1964) on the meanings of the signs and the color theory by Cerrato (2012) to analyze the meaning of the color in the data. The result shows that there are eight signs found in the data, four of them are categorized as verbal signs, and four others are visual signs. The verbal signs are visible through the placement, shape, and color of the texts, meanwhile, the visual sign focuses on the situation that happens throughout the posters. Based on the analysis, one verbal sign has a denotative meaning, another has a denotative and connotative meaning, and one does not have a denotative and connotative meaning, however, none of the data shows any myth aspects. Then, there is no dominant color found in the data because the colors in the data are different from one another.

Abstract

This paper investigates how two near-synonymous emotion words (i.e., ANGRY and MAD) would differ in their grammatical (i.e., morphological) and semantic profiles based on data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). Morphologically, we analyzed the distribution of verbal inflectional morphologies of these words overall and across different text types/genres in COCA. Semantically, we explored the preferred semantic category of the Experiencer and Stimulus collocates of ANGRY and MAD. In that way, we adopted both quantitative and qualitative methods. We showed that the base verbal form anger is very prominent across genres compared to the base form madden. Similarly, the -ed and third-person singular -s forms are more predominant for ANGER than for MADDEN. In contrast, the -ing form of maddening is far more common than angering. Semantically, angry predominantly collocates with Kinship-based Experiencer than mad. Both adjectives attract distinct types of Experiencer nouns from the social and political relation fields. In terms of the stimulus, mad attracts collocates from the semantic field of emotion and values more predominantly than angry. In sum, corpus analyses help reveal grammatical and semantic differences between near-synonyms such as ANGRY and MAD.

Abstract

This study examines the sociolinguistics of the language style used in the 2017 movie Darkest Hour, directed by Joe Wright and written by Anthony McCarten. The study focuses on two main research inquiries: (1) What language styles are utilised in the movie Darkest Hour (2) What variables influence the predominant language style utilised in the movie Darkest Hour. The study aims to identify and describe the language styles in the movie using Mandell and Kirszner's (2005) theory, which categorises language styles as frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. Furthermore, Holmes' (2013) theory is utilised to examine the aspects that impact the primary language style found in the movie. The study focuses on analysing characters' speech in Darkest Hour to reveal language patterns and analyse the sociolinguistic dynamics shown in the movie. This research delves into how language styles and contextual elements interact to enhance our understanding of how language is used for characterisation, narrative development, and historical representation in movie discourse.

Abstract

This paper explains how to apply the significance test of a synonym set in French to its appearance in a data corpus. The chi-square significance test is a procedure that can be used to test the significance of quantitative data statistically. The object of this research is a series of adjective synonyms with the core meaning 'extraordinary' in French. This research uses Leipzig corpora collection as data source, and AntConc (version 4.2.0) as a tool used in searching for the frequency of occurrence of each synonymous word in the news and website data corpus. The results of the significance test show that distributions differences between the real frequency of occurrence and the expected frequency of occurrence of synonymous words in the data corpus can be considered as not just a coincidence. With a p value < 0.001, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between the differences in the distribution of each adjective in different types of data corpus

Abstract

The aim of this writing is to discuss Balinese verbs conveying the meaning ‘to cut’ related to the sacred Hindu rites. They are referred to as the rituals of cutting hair ‘mapetik’ and tooth-filing ‘matatah’. The source of the data was from the conversations with Balinese people encountered during the ritual period. The data was collected by active participation, combined with observation and note-taking techniques. The collected data was analysed by metalanguage approach: mapping the meaning through language. Metalanguage manages to subtly map not only the meaning through entity, process, instrument(s), and the result, but    the ritual values as well. The result showed that the rites with their conveyed values rely on the meaning of the respective verbs.
