Abstract

This article aimed at finding out the types of language styles and how it is used by the main character. The object of this article is the main character’s utterances when he speaks with his daughter and his male friends in Hotel Transylvania 2 Movie. The data were collected by the method of documentation and note-taking. The descriptive qualitative and quantitative techniques were applied in accordance with the problems of this article. The theory applied in this article is the theory of language styles introduced by Joos (1967). Based on the article finding, the main character, Dracula, used three types of language styles when talking with his daughter, Mavis, and his male friends, Frankenstein, Wayne, Griffin, and Murray. An intimate style is dominantly used by Dracula when he speaks with Mavis; on the other hand, the casual style is mainly used when he speaks to his male friends. The application of language style by Dracula shows that the relationship affects an individual’s choice of language style. Moreover, a consultative style can be used among insiders to deliver information. In addition, the findings prove that interjection can be the characteristic of the casual or intimate style.

Abstract

Activities in the subak area display close integration between ritual patterns and agricultural procedures. This research aims to reveal socio-religious ideology in the Anggabaya East Denpasar subak’s texts. Research methods include the matching method and the agih method, with data obtained through interviews and direct observation of several respondents taken by sampling. In this subak, farmers practice high respect for God Vishnu and Dewi Sri, considered to be the givers of prosperity in the rice fields. Work in the rice fields is not only done physically but is also based on a religious aspect full of offerings and prayers. For example, farmers pray to Ratu Betara Sri, asking for safety when working in the rice fields by offering biukukung offerings. The agricultural process is directed through ritual stages, including ceremonies for rat pests. The farmer conveyed a prayer to Jero Ketut, begging the rats not to disturb him and asking for safety, "niki tiang nawegang ring jero ketut niki, ampunang ngusak asik, titiang nunas keselametan, mangde mekaon." Overall, the existence of religious and ritual elements in subak reflects the strong connection between spirituality and agricultural activities, creating harmony in the life of an agricultural society.

Abstract

Academics are always interested in debating the study of emotions across cultures and languages. This is due to the diverse ways that emotions can be expressed in different contexts and situations in each language and culture. This article aims to discuss the meaning of Balinese Lexicons dealing with emotions. The theory applied is Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) with two at once approaches, namely mapping and explication. The results showed that there is something good happened, represented by the lexicons: demen, kendel, and lédang, and something bad happened: sebet, inguh, and gedeg. The most interesting findings are the lexicon angob ‘surprise’ having semantic feature of something good might happen and ngon ‘surprise’ due to the something bad might happen. This can be inferred that there is an in-between position, not something good nor bad happened in the concerned Balinese emotion lexicons.
