Abstract

The lack of Indonesian students achievement in the international assessment is due to several factors. Students are not familiar with the problems requiring reasoning, in particular the proportional reasoning. This research aims to identify the distribution and the Level of Cognitive Demands (LCD) of the proportional reasoning problems found in the Year 7 and Year 8 mathematics textbooks based on the 2013 curriculum (revised edition 2014). The data collection was conducted by identifying the proportional reasoning problems found in the whole chapters of the textbooks which are then analysed and classified using the Smiths and Stein’s criteria of LCD (1998). The results reveal that the proportional reasoning problems were only found in the three of 17 chapters namely ratio and proportion, rectangle and triangle, and Pythagorean Theorem, which represent different LCD including Lower-LCD (Low-M and Low-P) and Higher-LCD (High-P). Out of 69 proportional reasoning problem found in the textbooks, the percentage of higher-LCD problems (n=29 ; 42.03%) is less than lower-LCD (n=40;57.97%). In addition, the higher-LCD problems found were only the high-P type. None was found to meet the requirement of High-DM demanding students to conduct ‘doing mathematics’, complex approach and self-monitoring or self regulation of students’ cognitive process. It is recommended that the proportional reasoning problems, including some High-DM problems, should be provided in each topic in Indonesian mathematics textbooks.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.9.1.4145.55-68

Abstract

Geometry is one of the topics that students must comprehend in mathematics. However, in reality, the students' ability concerning geometry is relatively low due to their low spatial reasoning ability. The ELPSA framework is one of the solutions to develop students' spatial reasoning abilities. This study aimed to describe students' spatial reasoning ability and the impact on retention through the ELPSA framework. This research was part of the ELPSA framework research and development. The subjects were four students, chosen from 25 Grade 7 students from one of the junior high schools in Banda Aceh. They were selected based on the percentage of spatial reasoning aspects mastered. The instrument used was a semi-structured interview that was preceded by a written test. The results showed that the four subjects could manipulate objects in their mind to change the shape of D-3 to D-2. However, one of them could not determine its relation precisely. Three out of four subjects could imagine the appearance of an object from different perspectives. Besides, two out of four subjects could visualize objects to determine the number of unit cubes contained in the solid geometry and only one subject could imagine objects from various perspectives to determine the surface area but did not use the given measurement.

Abstract

Previous studies suggested that real-world problems and students’ characteristics should be emphasized when designing statistics teaching materials. ELPSA Framework could address those considerations and was used as a learning framework for teaching statistics to junior high school students. Prior to classroom implementation, the teaching materials was tested and deemed valid and practical. Pilot implementation results showed that the teaching materials was effective for learning statistics because the ELPSA framework components facilitate students’ understanding of statistical concepts. Students also perceived learning based on the ELPSA framework positively because it enables them to enjoy the learning process.

Abstract

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) diperoleh perangkat soal matematika setara PISA pada konten shape and space dan change and relationship sebanyak 12 butir yang valid dan praktis dan (2) rata-rata pencapaian level siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal matematika setara PISA masih berada pada level 2.ABSTRACTProgram for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a study of the International level student assessment program is held from once every three years which aims to examine the ability of 15 year old students in reading, mathematics, and science literacy. The PISA results in 2009 and 2013 showed that Indonesia student's achievements in mathematics literacy is still at the lower level. Low achievement is closely connected to the learning process in schools, such as students are not accustomed to solve the problems which require the student's ability to analysing, reasoning, arguing, and representing problems in a variety of situations and solving problems related to their daily life. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the equivalent of PISA mathematical problems in Indonesian context so that teachers can increase the students’ mathematical literacy. The purpose of this study was (1) to produce the equivalent PISA mathematical problem on the shape and space and change and relationships for junior high school students that fulfill the validity and practicality criteria, and (2) to determine the level of students in solving mathematical problems similar to the content of PISA. Tessmer development design was used in this study. The subjects were 36 students grade IX-5 MTsN Model Banda Aceh. The results showed that (1) obtained the equivalent PISA mathematical problem on the shape and space and change and relationships content as much as 12 items are fulfill the validity and practicality criteria (2) The average of students’ achievement in level of students in solving mathematical problems PISA equivalent is at the baseline of level 2 (siswa yang mana? Abstract: The aim of this study is to describe students’ minsconception at decimal numbers learning. The research subjects are IV grade students SDN 67 and MIN Tungkob Aceh Besar. Qualitative research method using observation instrument and learning test on decimal numbers material were applied in this tudy. The results of this study is in the form students’ mistakes deccription in understanding the concept of deciding decimal numbers between two integers and change fractions into decimal numbers, and students’ mistakes in solving the addition operation of decimal numbers. It is indicated that the causes of the misconception are sample questions are less varied so that generalizations become wrong and the limited time in using props so students tend to use stackable summation like the summation of integers.Keyword: misconception, elementary school students, decimal numbersAbstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan bentuk miskonsepsi siswa pada pembelajaran bilangan desimal.

Abstract

The application of Realistic mathematics education (RME) in schools has not satisfied. The efforts of educators to help teachers implement RME are an ongoing process, including by providing examples of learning process through the video lessons. This study aims to investigate teacher understanding of the characteristics of RME through watching video lessons. Three elementary school teachers in Aceh, Indonesia, were involved in this research. Data was collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the teacher did not understand three of the five characteristics of RME. Teachers' understanding of real problems is only limited to the use of concrete objects. The teacher could not identify activities on the video about using models or symbols to scaffold students from concrete to more formal knowledge. The teacher also did not realize that the relationship between mathematical concepts can help students understand mathematics well. The implication of this study is that researchers need to guide the teacher design the learning trajectory before watching learning from other teachers. After watching the whole video lessons, the teacher also needs to be moved to identify important events related to the characteristics of RME in the learning in the video.

Abstract

The development of technology in education greatly influences learning strategies. Thus, teachers must adapt and present interesting and technology-based learning, such as e-comics. Therefore, the teacher must see in advance the extent to which students will accept e-comics for use in learning mathematics. This research aimed to determine students' perceptions of the use of e-comics as a media in mathematics learning. This research implemented a quantitative approach with a survey method. The samples were 124 students of Junior High Schools (SMP / MTs) in Aceh. The research data were obtained from questionnaires filled by students which were collected through the TAM (Technology Acceptance Models) framework which was distributed online.  The results showed that students used e-comic as a learning media influenced by their perceived benefits and attitudes towards the use of e-comic. The perceived benefits of students' attitudes have a significant role in their behavioral intention to use e-comic in learning mathematics. This research implies that e-comics has the potential to be used as a media in mathematics learning, especially on material that is considered difficult so that it can attract students' attention.
