Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop reading worksheet based on taskbased language teaching to teach students’ reading comprehension for tenth grade students at sma negeri 3 medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development design through six stages; gathering data and information, need analysis, materials development, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of the study was the tenth-grade students in SMA Negeri 3 Medan. The data were gathered by reviewing documents, conducting an interview with the English teacher, and distributing the students' needs analysis questionnaires to X MIA 2 consists of 35 students to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students needed reading worksheet based on task-based language teaching. The developed reading worksheets were validated by two experts which scored 3.77 and 3.87 on average. The scores approved that the reading worksheet based on task-based language teaching were very valid and suitable to use for the tenth-grade students in SMA Negeri 3 Medan. The result of the product was distributed to the students through bit.ly/TBLTworksheetKey words: Development, Reading, Worksheet, Task-Based Language Teaching.

Abstract

This study concerrns with Improving the Students Writing Narrative Text by ApplyingCooperative Integrated Reading and Composition Technique.The objective was toinvestigate improvement of students’ writing narrative text by applying CooperativeIntegrated Reading and Composition Technique. This research was conducted by usingaction research method. The subject of the study was grade VIII students of MTS Al-Hasanah Medan totalling to 29 students. They were taught writing by cooperativeintegrated reading and composition technique. The instruments for collecting data werequantitative data and qualitative data (observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, andinterview sheet). Based on the test score of quantitative data, students’ score keptimproving in every evaluation. In the orientation test the mean was 43, 2, in the cycle Itest the mean was 55, 6. In the cycle II test the mean was 67.2. The percentage oforientation test was 10, 34%, cycle I test was 24, 13% and cycle II test was 86, 20%.The finding of the research showed that applying Cooperative Integrated Reading andComposition Technique significantly improved students’ writing. The qualitative datashow that the students were more interested and motivated on writing throughcooperative integrated reading and composition technique. It is suggested that teachersshould apply cooperative integrated reading and composition technique as one ofmethods to improve students’ writing.

Abstract

This research deals with an error analysis. The objectives of the study are (1) to identify and classify the kinds of regular and irregular verbs error find in recount, narrative, procedure, and descriptive writing by the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Tanjungbalai, (2) to know the most dominant text getting regular and irregular verbs error by the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Tanjungbalai, (3) to find out the causes of regular and irregular verbs error in recount, narrative, procedure, and descriptive writing by the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Tanjungbalai. The research design that was used in this study is descriptive research. The sources of data were taken from the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Tanjungbalai which consists of 40 students who were chosen by taking the X-2 class as the sample. In this research, the writing text was used as collecting data. The result of the analysis shows that: (1) the errors of regular and irregular verbs in recount, narrative, procedure, and descriptive writing made by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Tanjungbalai were 112 occurrences of all errors. The most dominant text getting regular and irregular verbs was narrative text occurred 40 cases (10 regular verbs and 30 irregular) or (36%), it was followed by recount text occurred 36 cases (7 regular verbs and 29 irregular verbs) or (32%) then the descriptive text occurred 26 cases (7 regular verbs and 19 irregular verbs) or (23%) and the last was Procedure text occurred 10 cases (2 regular verbs and 8 irregular verbs) or (8%).

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the effect of using Predict,Locate,Add,Note (PLAN) Strategy on the Students’ Reading Comprehension of Argumentative Texts. This study ased the experimental design. The population of this study was the students of SMA Negeri 14 Medan. There were sixty students as the sample of research. This study was conductedwith two randomized group. Namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by Predict,Locate,Add,Note (PLAN) Strategy while control group was taught without Predict,Locate,Add,Note (PLAN) Strategy. The instrument of collecting the data was multiple choice test which consists of 25 items. To obtain the reliability of the test, the researcher used Kuder Richardson (KR-20) formula. The calculation shows the reliability is 0.83 (very high). The data were analyzed by using t-test. The calculation show that t-observed (6.5) is higher than t-table (2.00) at the evel of significance (x)0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58. Therefore, the null hyphothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hyphotesis(Ha) is accepted. It means that teaching reading comprehension of argumentative texts by Predict, Locate, Add, Note (Plan) Strategy has more significant effect than teaching reading comprehension of argumentative texts without Predict, Locate, Add, Note (PLAN) Strategy.

Abstract

This study focuces on analyzing the process of classroom interaction through Flanders Interaction Analysis Category (FIAC) model. The objective was to describe how the teacher and students use the categories of classroom interaction in English class by using Flanders Interaction Analysis Category (FIAC) model. The data is found based on the data transcription. The source of the data were the English teacher and 11th grade students at Vocational School Mandiri Percut Sei Tuan. The instruments for data collection were observation, video recording, and note talking. The design of data analysis applied descriptive qualitative design. In analyzing the data, the researcher dentifying the data transcription, Classifying the data, Giving a code number, pairing the data, and Plotting the code number into a matrix. It was found that the total percentage each categories classroom interaction were accepts feelings (2.15%), praise and encourages (9.67%), accepts or uses the ideas of the students (0%), asks questions (18.27%), lecturing (6.45%), giving directions (15.05%), criticizingor justifying authority (12.90%), students talk-response (32.25%), students talk-initiation (2.15%), and silence or confusion (1.07%). It showed the students participated in the interaction process.

This research was aimed to develop English digital conversation media for speaking activities based on the students’ need at SMAN 1 Kec. Binjai Kab.Langkat. This research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) method. There were seven steps applied in this research, the steps were: 1). Potential and Problem 2). Gathering data and information 3). Product design 4). Validating to experts 5). Revising Design 6). Product test 7). Final product revision. The subject of this research was tenth grade students of social science at SMAN 1 Kec. Binjai Kab. Langkat. The instruments of collecting data were questionnaires and interview. The data analyzed by using descriptive technique. Need analysis questionnaire was calculated using percentage by Suharto (2006) to get an information of students’ need before developing digital conversation media. Expert judgment data were calculated by using Likert Scale, mean and criteria interval of expert judgment to know the validity of digital conversation media which has been develop. The result of expert validation was 4,5 which mean English conversation media is Very Good category. Therefore the media is appropriate to use in the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Kec.Binjai Kab.Langkat to teach speaking. Abstract

The objective of this study aimed to find out the textbook that is readable for vocational school of eleventh grade students at YAPIM. It also used descriptive method to analyze and describe the readability based on SMOG and the New Dale-Chall formula. The data are the sentences in the six texts taken from the textbook published by Erlangga. The findings shows that the readability score based on SMOG formula looks like: text 1 got 134.43 in grade 15, text 2 got 89.98 in grade 12, text 3 got 25.88 in grade 8, text 4 got 85.89 in grade 12, text 5 got 15.75 in grade 7, and text 6 got 53.31 in grade 10. The average of the score was 67.54. Meanwhile, the readability score based on the New Dale-Chall formula looks like: text 1 got 8.0525 in grade 11-12, text 2 got 7.6315 in grade 9-10, text 3 got 5.0865 in grade 5-6, text 4 got 8.9655 in grade 11-12, text 5 got 5.5505 in grade 5-6, text 6 got 6.7285 in grade 7-8. The average of the score was 7. It shows that based on the average of the score from those formulas, the textbook is readable for the eleventh grade students.

Abstract

Students’ worksheet, as one of learning tools that is used to involve the students to work actively during teaching and learning process, should be developed based on the students’ need. Students’ worksheet with scientific approach in listening skill has not applied. A good student’s worksheet must be satisfied criteria of valid, practical and effective. This research is a developmental research using Research and Development (RnD). It has been conducted on 35 students of SMK Negeri 10 Medan grade X for Multimedia Program. In this study, data obtained from Curriculum syllabus analysis, students’ need analysis and results of validation. Students’ need analysis was done to analyze the students’ perception about the previous learning materials and to know what kind of learning material they need. All of student answer the questionnaire in students’ worksheet in listening skill. From their answers are summarized into questions and answers for students’ worksheet, especially in the listening activity.  Keywords: Students’ worksheet, scientific approach, listening skill.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop learning media in Writing Descriptive Text for Grade VIII of Junior Highschool Students. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product.. The subject of the study was Grade VIII of SMP N 3 LubukPakam. The data were gathered  by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students needs English learning media which can motivate the students to understand about the descriptive writing. The product has been validated by experts. The result of the product was videos that contain audio-visual media to be used in mastering the descriptive text writing. Keywords: Cartoon Story Maker, Descriptive Text, Research and Development (R&D)

Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to find out the effect of applying SAVI model on Students’ students’ speakingAchievement in oral descriptive text. This study used the experimental design. The population of this study was the students of MAN Kualuh Hulu. The subject of this study was the 2013/2014 tenth grade students of MAN Kualuh Hulu. This study was conducted with two randomized groups namely experimental group and control group. The control group was taught by conventional method while experimental group was taught by applying SAVI model. The instrument used in this study was an objective test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the researcher used Kuder-Richardson (KR-21) formula. The calculation shows that the reliability was 0.67 (reliabity). The data were analyzed by using t-test. The calculation shows that t-observed (5.36) is higher than t-table (1.996) at the level of significance (α) 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 68. Therefore, null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means that SAVI Model significantly affect the students’ speaking achievement in oral descriptive text.
